I’m so excited that it’s coat season!! In my opinion, you can never own too many coats. There are as many different types of coats as we can dream of however I have noticed some distinct trends emerging. So here are five Fall and Winter coat trends I’m loving.
Wrap coats (also sometimes called shawl collar coats) are terrific because they can be worn with pretty much any outfit. They dress up a casual look like this one beautifully. They add the ideal finishing touch to a dressier outfit (see an example on me here). They add polish to a work outfit.
When choosing a wrap coat, the most important things are to make sure the tie hits you across your natural waist and that the collar does not overwhelm you. Of all the five Fall and Winter coat trends I’m loving, this one is the newest and most likely to remain trendy for years to come.
I also want to give a shout-out to the long cardigan! Long cardigans bring a tailored, preppy vibe when paired with pants. They can also make a dress more work-appropriate! I work in a casual, fashion-forward office these days where I feel fine in a mini dress. Add a long cardigan and tights for Winter and I feel downright preppy chic!! You can see this cardigan in another color on me here.
2. The Leopard Coat.
Leopard is clearly a trend that isn’t going anywhere! While retailers are mixing in zebra and snake prints more this year, I believe leopard endures because it has such a luxurious vibe. I’m partial to small, distinct spots like on my faux Dalmation coat seen here. (Also on me here.) However any kind of leopard adds style to an outfit when you choose the right shape. I’m partial to dusters, peacoats and blazers for this second of five Fall and Winter coat trends I’m loving.
3. The Plaid Coat.
While I would not recommend going oversized with leopard, plaid can totally be rocked with volume!! Because many plaid patterns have a menswear vibe volume gives them a rustic chic feeling. To balance things out towards my more feminine leanings, I like to pair plaid with skirts and dresses. For this outfit, I picked the colors of the plaid out for my other elements. I also wore this coat here, and will have a third styling with it soon! (Sneak a peek on my Instagram.)
Plaid is very easy to wear and that’s why it’s one of the five Fall and Winter coat trends I’m loving. It’s hard to go wrong with plaid!! You can pick a plaid pattern that contains the colors you wear most, whether it’s brown and green like my coat or pink and grey or blue and black. The combinations of plaid are literally endless!!
4. The Moto Jacket.
I think it’s safe to say the moto jacket is the jacket of our generation! This style is so omni-present and I love it! Moto jackets are a fantastic shape that allows much of what you’re wearing underneath to be seen. This is the material-agnostic trend of the five Fall and Winter coat trends I’m loving. Moto jackets come in suede like mine above (also on me here and without the belt 1, 2), leather or cotton. I’ve got so many moto jacket stylings that I think it’s best to visit my OOTD page to see them all! And you can see even more moto jacket outfit ideas on my Street Style Pinterest board.
5. The Trench Coat.
No closet is complete with a trench coat! It’s the most enduring of the five Fall and Winter coat trends I’m loving, probably because it has so much purpose. It stops rain and wind. The trench coat acts as an outfit protector, and it just so happens to be ultra-chic!
You may recognize this sweater tank top from another recent post and I’ve got another look at this trench up on my liketoknow.it profile! Of all the available trenches, I picked this one to buy because I love popping the collar and showing off the pop of navy underneath! Such a chic little styling note.
So, what is your favorite of the five Fall and Winter coat trends I’m loving? Or is there another style I haven’t covered that you like even more than these?
