3 Ways to Wear a Mini Dress in Winter featuring the Glimmering Lights Mini Dress by Free People :: Effortlessly with Roxy

Anthropologie is having a 30% off sitewide Anthro weekend, plus Free Shipping over $50! Quick picks on the blog homepage — full post tomorrow!

The trees have all shed their leaves and there’s not even a hint of warmth in the air. Ahhhh yes it’s late Fall now, so close to Winter! While I’ve packed most of my Spring and Summer clothing away, there are a few key pieces I have left out purposely.

You may not realize it but it’s quite fun to wear a mini dress even when it’s cold out! Today I’m going to show you 3 Ways to Wear a Mini Dress in Winter featuring the Glimmering Lights Mini Dress by Free People. I’ve used the same dress in all three looks but you don’t have to. This is all about showing what to wear with the mini dress.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this work:

  • Layers. Preferably both a cardigan and a jacket.
  • Tights. I like to wear nude tights as long as possible, but opaque tights totally work too.
  • Weatherproof shoes. I’ve got three options in this post.

First up a very boho take on the dress. That’s fitting since it’s a Free People piece! The first of my three outfit ideas for mini dresses in the Fall and Winter focuses on warming the dress up with some faux fur and a leather moto. Even in the snow, how cute would this look be?

Jacket: Madewell (also here, here) | Faux Fur Vest: LOFT, super old (similar 1, 2, 3)
Dress: Free People | Necklace: Ela Rae via Free People | Sunnies: Express
Shoes: Sorel (sold out, similar 1, 2, 3) | Bag: Céline (similar 1, 2, 3) | Tights: Hue

The highlight of shooting this outfit was without a doubt the moment a NYPD mounted officer agreed to let his horse, Clyde, join the shoot for a moment!! As far as the outfit goes, three different length layers help to bring visual interest to my look. A longer middle layer makes the dress look longer and also assists the jacket in drawing attention to my hourglass waist, hiding somewhere under the dress!

In my second of 3 Ways to Wear a Mini Dress in Winter or Fall, multiple layers again come into play.

Hat: Amazon Fashion | Necklace: Ela Rae via Free People (similar)
Dress: Free People | Cardigan: Banana Republic | Jacket: Blank NYC via Nordstrom (similar)
Boots: JustFab | Sunnies: Express | Bag: Céline (similar 123) | Tights: Hue

This very city chic outfit is a great excuse to show off these killer boots! They come in both regular and wide calf. I love the black uppers with the wood-colored heel. An over the knee boot might be too much with a mini dress, but a knee-high boot works perfectly.

Meanwhile the long waterfall cardigan and faux leather jacket combine as playful layers over the dress. I love how the waterfall cardi moves as I walk! I can wrap it around me more if the day is particularly cold. The leather moto however provides excellent warmth for those cold low sun days!

In my final look, a bit of fun with color is on tap.

Bag: Rebecca Minkoff (similar 1, 2, 3) | Shoes: Vans (more colors 1, 2)
Earrings: Anthropologie | Necklace: Peggy Li (sold out, more options) | Tights: Hue

Whether it’s a bit of color, a city chic ensemble or a boho outfit, the keys to making a mini dress work in cold weather is layers and making sure everything beyond the dress is weather appropriate! I hope you’ve enjoyed these three Outfit Ideas for Mini Dresses in Fall and Winter. I’ll have another post with 3 outfit ideas for one item next week!

These are all great outfit ideas!! I love the one with the Alpine Sweater the most but I would wear any of these. Looking forward to more posts like this.

Ooh there's so many great choices to see here and you look adorable Roxy! That mini dress from Free People is the cutest…that store always has something to fall in love with:)

    • December 15, 2018 / 7:34 am

So true, le sigh, they do have such beautiful stuff!

I was wondering Roxy. Did they ever make it right by you regarding the missed order? I wanted one of their jackets in a color exclusive to the fp website and I couldn’t bring myself to order it, because of their pretty terrible behavior.

        • December 17, 2018 / 9:08 am

Not yet Mary but I think I've finally made contact with the right people to fix the issue.

I would not feel comfortable wearing such a short skirt. I'd fear flashing everything when walking or sitting.

Absolutely love the sweater worn with the third look. Must check that out! And the horse–who can resist him?

    • December 15, 2018 / 7:37 am

The horse is the cutest!! The dress is short but trust me, there are people in Manhattan wearing far shorter things on a daily basis. I can sit down in it safely and Alex loves it. We often get better service at restaurants when I'm wearing a mini! 🙂 When I was a bartender in college I wore hot shorts that showed part of my butt cheeks. In comparison this dress is downright matronly, lol. It's all about how you feel in it and I get that it may be too short for some people's tastes. That's why I included varying lengths of minis in the shoppable boutiques.

I am so happy about this post because I own this dress too and was about to return it. I couldn't figure out how to wear it. So thanks! I love the middle look with the black cardigan and faux leather jacket.

This post is illustration of how tall you are Roxy. I'm 5'2" and the dress hits an inch above my knees. Clearly you are much, much taller than me. 😉

    • December 15, 2018 / 7:38 am

Ha! Yes I'm 5'9" so we are very different heights. =) But that's very cool that we are dress twins!!

I love the middle outfit but no way I'd wear such a short dress!

I don't remember Anthro offering such a generous discount right before Christmas – 30% off and shipping? Roxy any quarterly info to pass on?

    • December 15, 2018 / 7:39 am

Haha the look is not for everyone, I get it. But I love it!

As far as I have heard Anthropologie is doing quite well, but I don't have any new numbers to share. Urban Outfitters usually puts out a holiday results press release in mid to late January.

???to ur looks Roxy ?u look so cute and pretty.

I got this dress for my upcoming Christmas meet “Elina Embroidered Dress”
    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/elina-embroide

I’m 6/8 in dress and 6 fits me perfectly. It’s an effortlessly feminine and pretty dress.

    • December 15, 2018 / 7:40 am

SO pretty Nam! We were just admiring that dress on the onesies rack at the Financial District Anthropologie the other day. That will be perfect for a Christmas party. 🙂

Do you really wear such short dresses in real life?

    • December 15, 2018 / 7:40 am

Yes Kate, I do. 🙂 Really. If it's not for you I get it but no need to hide under another name to ask again. Let's support each other and build each other up here, not tear each other down. Agreed?

I know I do haha!! I love both short and longer lengths but I find mini's are the most fun to wear as long as the length is long enough to cover from behind:)

Dear Roxy–it's been awhile since I last posted–mostly because I took a break from Anthro and from shopping in general and then my workload became overwhelming. I have, though, been following your instagram and liking your instagram posts as well as your comments on this blog. I just had to pipe in on this conversation to say that I truly appreciate your authenticity and transparency. I agree that we women need to support one another–especially because there is enough tearing down happening in social media as well as mass media. You are an inspiration to me in this regard in that you are helping us feel confident about ourselves through your example. You are helping us see that style isn't about looking good; it's about feeling good in our own skin. I love the second-to-last picture in this post–your joy is palpable! Thank you for being you!

I just re-read my post and I wanted to clarify: I didn't mean to imply that your posts don't look good; in fact, you look more than good–you're beautiful!

          • December 17, 2018 / 9:07 am

            Thank you Christina. ?

Such cute ideas! I love to wear sweaters as dresses with dark tights or leggings underneath. Mini dresses are practically the same thing. I love the second combination the most. In my mind I could wear the first look too but I don't think I can pull off a fur vest. It looks great on you though! I really like that you've shown multiple outfit combos.
