Reviews: Encouraging and discouraging tops

A quick tangent before the reviews: anyone else notice something awesome on Anthropologie’s website this morning? Your wishlist items now display both the web style # and the retail SKU! The retail SKU even matches up with the size you select. This. Is. AWESOME!!! Nicely done Anthro.

A little bit flowery and a little bit rock and roll, the sparkly shoulders of  Dolan’s Permanent Collection Blouse ($148) beckoned me towards it. The back of this shirt is oddly a grey jersey panel which is a very odd choice. Combined with the stumped cuff sleeve this top seems masculine to me which I did not like. But I liked the front enough to try on a size small.

Dolan tends to run large and this shirt was no exception. My usual size medium would have been far too big. The front print is surprisingly sheer. My dark bra underneath was showing through in the harsh fitting room light. This top says hipster to me in every way. I imagine some cool girl rocking this with a pair of skinnies and some kind of round toe flat. Unfortunately that girl is not me. Back to the rack.

Deletta’s Longji Terrace Tank, ($78) was that darker shade of green that I love, so of course I had to try it on. This winter-weight tank has thick shoulder straps with studs adorning the low side, plus tons of sparkly teardrop jewels attached the front The final element are dots which start small by the hemline and grow as you move up the tank. Cool design.

I grabbed my usual size small which fit comfortably. The bottom of the top flares out slightly which yielded enough give to fit over my hips. It seems a shame to cover up this fun cotton tank with a cardigan but at this time of year that’s what I’d have to do. This is another top where I feel like some discount chain must have a similar design. Wishlisted, but waiting for sale.

Continuing the sparkly top theme, this is Tiny’s Discovered Plata Tank ($78) which I tried on in my usual size medium. A jersey base is spiced up with a sparkly strip of metallic thread and sequins. I love it! What am I not loving as much? The cut-in winged shoulders which immediately make me look broad. Awesome, thanks Anthro.

The good news is this top looks great under a cardigan. For evidence, check out my review of the Plaited Pocket Cardigan (now $80), style #19333582 in this post. I am tempted by this top but not at full price. Waiting for sale.

My search for a tie-neck blouse recently came to a successful end, yet I can’t help but be tempted by the Caprice Blouse ($88) from Stitch & Knot. This silk dry-clean only top comes in either a solid pink or the navy print I tried on. The tie is long and loose enough to knot once, twice, or even thrice. You can easily tie a bow in the center or off to one side, or around the back if you prefer. I tried leaving it open but wasn’t impressed by the result.

I’m not too familiar with this brand so I tried my usual size medium. It was loose in all areas so I’d size down to a small to buy. I imagine wearing this tucked into a high-waisted skirt (like my Milady Skirt maybe?).  It’s beautiful and made well. Tempting. Wishlisted!

Anthropologie is playing around with draping again. This is the Flounced & Draped Blouse ($88) from Edme & Esyllte, a brand which I usually associate with florals and flounce. So I got one half right. This top comes in the moss I tried on, an electric blue which I am thrilled to see at Anthro, or a purple motif that confuses the heck out of me.

I reached for my usual size 6 which fit well if not a bit loose around the shoulders. I am trying to understand this top…I have said this before about another Anthro top but it it looks like the shirt ate a lemon and is now puckered its lips. The drape in the middle looks strange from the front…

…and even odder from the side. I love the material and the small shoulder embellishment. This moss color is an elegant choice. But try as I might I can’t wrap my head around the design. And I’m someone who loves architecture in my clothing! This one is sadly a pass.

It’s not that I hate 70s styles, it’s that they hate me. Totem’s All Angles Blouse ($128) conspires to make me look wide thanks to a droopy, drapey body, long sad puffy sleeves and a tie directly around the widest part of my hips. Awesome. There are two elements I do like: the lazy v-neck and the geometric diamond print that is angled every which way.

My true size medium “fit” though let’s be honest, this top looks terrible on me. It adds about 20 lbs and makes me want to do some swashbuckling. I imagine on a straighter shape this top will be all kinds of fabulous, so no harm meant. I just could not wait to take this off. And once again I have to wonder why this kind of top is at Anthro, which I don’t exactly associate with this era. Back to the rack.

Edme & Esyllte’s Fairy Dance Top ($78) is much more Anthro’s aesthetic. These bold abstract prints make me think of one.september but the overall cut and design is E&E for sure.

My usual size 6 fit easily, with some extra room in the back. This could be because I wore the tie to the front when it is meant to be in the back. Oops. I just followed how it was on the hanger! I love the fluttery sleeves and the lacey v on the front. The length is good too; this top hits just below the widest part of my hips to help make me look thinner. I can’t say I love the print but I do like the colors within. Further pondering needed. Wishlisted for now.
