OOTD: What I wore this week…and an item for sale

For the past couple of weeks I have been having a fight with my bangs. Even though my stylist recommended cutting them shorter I insisted on long side bangs because, well, right now it seems like everyone has the short choppies and I wanted to be different. My stylist told me that was incredibly dumb and my hair would fight it but cut according to my demands. She was right of course and finally on Tuesday of this week I relented and cut my never-quite-right side bangs into the choppies they always wanted to be.

It was a great idea though as you’ll see in the photos from the rest of the week. This was me on Monday — pre-choppies (please pardon my recycling center in the background, I snapped this before work and didn’t have time to set up my “studio”). The sourpuss face was due to the time change, boo. My bangs just never quite sat the way I wanted them to as side bangs and I ended up pinning them back every day. Oh well. I loved this outfit though…so glad to be a proud member of the Tempting Trellis club! I got mine at full price but don’t regret the spend at all. I only wish I’d bought it sooner.

In this outfit:
Sweater: Tempting Trellis Cardigan (now $50, similar here, here, and here, cached link)
Top: Fancy That Tank ($58) now known as the Buds & Bunches Tee
Skirt: J.Crew straight denim skirt from 2008 (similar here and here)
Tights: Hue Opaque Tights in grey-blue ($13)
Shoes: Madden Girl Raazle in grey (similar here, here and here)
Necklace: Binu’s Necklace ($58)

The choppies went over well — even our COO paid me a compliment which was unexpected and awesome. My COO is of course the wonderful guy that I freaked out last summer by dying my hair purple. Hey, I asked permission first. Got to love Internet jobs! For my Tuesday look I was playing around with blue. This skirt which I adore is unfortunately symbolic of J.Crew’s ever-declining quality. I have worn it three times and on Tuesday the stitching in the back started coming undone, such that the hemmed-up fabric fell down. Easy to fix (luckily) but as I was examining the stitching to set my sewing machine correctly I couldn’t believe how cheaply it was done. Not that J.Crew cares right now, as they’re all diving in their money pits right about now.

I conceived this look around the belt, which is the Transmissions Belt. It’s sadly sold out online but Soho still has some of the motifs in stock. This is the aqua version and I also own a slightly more technicolored brown-purple-white version. I just love this belt! The clasp is not as significant as I’d like (it’s very thin wood or wood-covered plastic) but the belt itself is awesome. Some of the reviews despair of beads falling off but that has not been the case for me even after many wearings. It’s still full price at $28 but if you can find it in store I highly recommend it. Just inspect it first to make sure none of the beads are loose. Anthro, you do belts very well.

In this outfit:
Necklace: Anthropologie Tiger’s Eye Necklace from 2007 (similar here, here and here)
Sweater: Banana Republic Cardigan (similar here, here and here)
Top: Friendly Competition Top ($68)
Belt: Transmissions Belt ($28, similar here)
Skirt: J.Crew Silk Indigo Skirt (similar here, here and here)
Tights: Hue Opaque Tights in black ($13)
Shoes: Nine West Namely Flats in black ($80, similar here, here and here)

Not wanting to get pinched on my commute, I broke out the green for St. Patrick’s Day on Wednesday. It was a great opportunity to debut my From-the-Green Cardi. A glorious thing happened too. The weather, which had been rainy and nasty here finally broke and the day was beautiful. It stayed that way for the rest of the week! Back to rain tomorrow sadly. Do people really prefer nasty March rain storms to snow? I’d take the white stuff any day.

In this outfit:
Sweater: From-the-Green Cardi (now $70, cached link)
Top: J.Crew Ruffles and Roses Tissue Tank in ivory (similar here and here)
Skirt: Many Moods Skirt (Level 99’s spring denim skirt here)
Tights: Hue Opaque Tights in black ($13)
Shoes: Nine West Namely Flats in black ($80, similar here, here and here)
Necklace: Finishing Touch Necklace

By Thursday it was warm enough out to go bare-legged…I am so sorry to anyone who was blinded by my pasty white legs. It was also the perfect opportunity to break out my new Fifth Form Shift! I ended up settling on an 8 since the selection was limited in-store. There’s a lot of room around the waist and hips at the moment plus some poufy butt which will get fixed at the tailor soon. I didn’t care though — I was so excited not to need a coat! It was really weird seeing all the people who were still rocking winter coats. We NYCers are cynical; I guess they didn’t believe the weather report.

In this outfit:
Sweater: J.Crew Jackie Cardigan ($62) from 2008
Dress: Fifth Form Shift ($128, cached link)
Shoes: Nine West Naughty Flat ($80)
Necklace: Forever 21 Apple Jewelry Set ($5)

Come Friday it was casual time. I was a bit warm in the jeans. I desperately need to buy some new crops. I love the polka dot Cherie cami…I remember hating it when I first bought it but it’s evolved into one of my go-to preppy pieces. And yes, I wore my jeans cuffed. I have no excuse.

In this outfit:
Sweater: J.Crew Tartine Cardigan (similar here)
Top: J.Crew Cherie Cami (similar here, here and here)
Jeans: Lucky Stark Sweet N Lows ($80)
Shoes: Nine West Namely Flats in black ($80, similar here, here and here)

And slightly off-topic, earlier this month I splurged on the lovely Alder Dress ($240) you see above from Love, Church & State. Only a 2 and a 6 were left, and though I knew I’d need to size up to an 8 I gave the 6 a shot anyway. Unfortunately it’s way too tight around my thighs.

Since the label is small I really don’t want to return the dress — I want to support a small but growing label! So I wanted to see if anyone in the community is interested in buying the dress from me. I’d part with it for $125/shipped. You can email me for measurements, etc. but I’d say this would fit a straight-shaped size 6 fine or a curvy size 4. If only an 8 were still available on the site! In the navy! Oh well.

Yay for the Tempting Trellis Club – is that part of or alongside the Two Paths Trench one? Hmm.Love the Fifth Form Shift on you and it doesn't look too poofy. I don't think it quite works on me though – tried the size down today and it looked even worse!

I've been holding myself back from calling around since it's still FP. So sad my local Anthro doesn't have it! A little off topic but has anyone noticed that the quality has gone down on some of Anthro's clothes? For example, I bought and love the Green Cardi you wore on St Paddy day, but noticed the sewing is coming undone/not secure on some of the flowers/leaves. I also have the Parted Petal cardi and noticed the stitching is coming undone. Finally today, I noticed the applique on the A Bloom Cardigan (name?) is falling off. This makes me sad because I love Anthro clothes (of course). I thought we were paying more for quality based on their recent quarterly report?

You look so much younger and *happier* with your new bangs. Wow, now I'm questioning my own decision to grow mine out, lol.The Fifth Form dress outfit is fantastic. I love it. The red Jackie so perfectly compliments that dress. What fun outfits!

  18. March 22, 2010 / 9:10 am

Your bangs look awesome! I'm loving you in these cute OOTD – the blues, the Tempting Trellis (might wear mine today!) and the polka dots casual outfit is adorable! The From-the-Green was the perfect choice for St. Patricks Day and Spring Sunshine! Is it too early to start sale dancing for the Fifth Form Shift? I know we usually wait until Monday night – but I'll seriously twirl and chant all day if only it will see a MD tomorrow. LOVE. IT.

LH – With the Fifth Form Shift, I understand everyone's desire to wait until sale. It feels like it's about time (it did come out in January after all). I hope that stores have some inventory they're stashing in the back.lori – thank you! My stylist is going to be saying I told you so up the whazoo. ;)Fiona – thanks! Note to self: bangs are good. Annie – it's such a great little cardi, I feel like I've worn it 5 or 6 times already. Perfect for spring. Now that it's on sale grab it if you can!!Anon @ 11:04 – thanks much! I am LOL'ing at this point, thanks ladies so much for all the reassurance.thehalcyonlife – why thank you. I think I am slowly getting the hang of this whole OOTD thing.Anonymous @ 1:10 – hmm. For the From-the-Green Cardi a couple of my friends noted that the elbows on theirs had started to come undone. It's possible that their QC is slipping though if so that would be a very bad development. Diana Draw – I'm happy about the Jackie because there was only one other outfit I wear it with, so now I get some more use out of it! The red has stayed surprisingly vibrant, yay to J.Crew of yore!Jan Russell – never too early, I'm quite surprised it wasn't included in the sale stuff last week.

You are rocking the new hairstyle for sure! I also love your Fifth Form Shift outfit with the apple jewelry. Your first outfit reminds me that I am so glad I got the Tempting Trellis cardigan – I love it more every time I see it!

  21. March 22, 2010 / 4:40 pm

  22. March 22, 2010 / 7:05 pm

I love your Tuesday outfit – the blue is a great color on you. Bummer that the Jcrew quality is lacking… hopefully they will read about our issues and work on quality control. Happy Monday!!http://spillingthebeans-emily.blogspot.com/

  23. March 22, 2010 / 7:11 pm

I bought the fifth form shift when it first came out, but I have yet to wear it. It just always seems like I need warmer weather since it is still cold 'round here. I may have to winterize it soon though! :)PS – I plan to send you an email. If the dress is still available, I am interested!

  24. March 22, 2010 / 7:32 pm
