Reviews: The top layer

Hello pretty blue swing coat. You need a new home, don’t you? Would you like to come home with me??

Tabitha you temptress. First you make me swoon with the Stork Club Jacket ($168, review here). Now it’s the Cerulean Swing Coat ($128) that has stolen my heart. It’s made of very soft ribbed wool and the color is just perfect. I could see throwing this on over a dress or wearing it casually with jeans for weekend errands. I envy those of you who live in warm-weather climates who could wear it now. I would probably have to wait until spring.

I tried on the 8 but easily could have gone for my true size 6. It has a single hook-and-eye closure at the neckline. The 3/4 sleeves are slightly tapered at the elbow. This jacket really is perfection but the price is disappointing. I think I will wait to see if this one makes it to sale.

Idra has released a bunch of jackets this year. They’re all high-quality, versatile and short. Boo to the last part for me.

This one is the Deni Bomber Jacket ($98). It’s made of slim-wale corduroy which makes it very soft, almost velvety. I love the zip closure with it’s large pull and the non-functional buttons are a cool touch. This really does look like a utilitarian bomber. I almost always have to size up in coats and this one was no different. The size 8 was perfect aside from being short. It would stay as low as I have it pulled down once I started walking around. It would probably slide up another few inches to my natural waist. Too bad, because that makes it a no-go for me. Highly recommended if it is long enough for you.

This is not real fur. Just wanted to get that out of the way first. Idra presents their modern spin on the fur coat via the Wassailing Jacket ($168). It certainly lives up to it’s name! I am interested in buying a faux fur vest as one of my trend pieces this year. For kicks I gave this jacket a try.

It’s very boxy but otherwise it’s pretty damn hip. I don’t have a problem with the length because I could wear this over another coat to create some kind of crazy layered look. (J.Crew, don’t get any ideas please.) I also look like a crazy rich lady since I was wearing a sparkly necklace when I tried this on. I tried on the 8 and it was too roomy. I would buy my true size 6. It has a few hook-and-eye closures in the front to close it up if you want. Somehow I am thinking this coat would work both casually or dressed up. I guess it’s the Rachel Zoe effect.

Eley Kishimoto’s collaboration with Anthropologie has started hitting stores stateside. I was thrilled to see the jaw-droppingly awesome Leading Lady Trench ($498) at the Soho Anthropologie. The pattern makes me kind of dizzy and be warned the IRL shots are even more vertigo-inducing.

This trench fit me better than my Burberry trench and that is saying a lot. Usually with double-breasted options I look very wide. But because Eley Kishimoto knows the trick — space the top buttons farther apart and slowly taper in as you go down — I look nice and thin in this one. I am also pleased to report that the belt has plenty of holes for waists of all sizes. Hooray for not having to punch a hole myself! My true size 6 was overly roomy so I went down to a 4 in this one. Truly the only thing stopping me from buying this one is the price. Stupid exchange rate. Truth be told, I can justify the cost. This coat is worth if it. Splurge on it if you can!

The last option in this epic review post is from the Mise-en-Scene by Ruffian collaboration. It’s not online yet. I’m going to call the the Squiggly Sweatercoat ($168) for now. I’ll update the post once it shows up on Anthro’s site. The price was much lower than I was expecting so bravo to Anthro for this one! The coat itself is wool with nylon stitching to make the squiggles. I loved the blue-grey tones that kind of look like the foggy British countryside.

My true size medium was a good fit. This coat has one hook-and-eye closure at the waist. I have a thing for long sweatercoats and this one is no exception. I love it, love it, love it! So warm and it goes with my winter wardrobe palette. I would add it to my wishlist…if it was online.

Ooops, forgot to add sizing details to that one. It was a 4 (one size down). Thanks Bronzi, I'll update the post now.

I love the faux fur coat! I got a similar one from UO last year so I'll have to pass on this one…maybe 🙂 It looks cute on, though. Thanks for sharing 🙂

That's the Ruffian sweatercoat I was asking you about awhile ago. I love it! I think the fit is beautiful and the colors are neutral enough to go with most things. What sold me on it is the fit. It's been in my store for almost a month and I haven't seen it on the website.

Roxy,Question on the Black Friday sales for Anthropologie. Are the markdowns usually done on Tuesday or Friday during the Thanksgiving week? If it's Friday, can we access the sale items online on Thursday? Many companies have started doing –allowing the customers to buy the sale items on Thursday on line eventhough the sale doesn't start until Friday morning.

Diem — I was wondering if that was the coat as I was trying it on! It's beautiful for sure. I am not sure about Black Friday…last year was a one-off because of the economy but I remember there being a lot more in-store than online. I can inquire — don't know if the staff will know or not.Chloe — I thought of your recent OOTD with the vest. Now you can have the coat version! (And it will be yet another thing we both own.) 😉

Hi there. I just found this site, and I LOVE it!!!! Thanks for such great insight and ideas. I thought I would ask if anyone has tried the AG Ponte Leggings, and if so what they have worn with them. I received them as a gift and I am on the fence if they are keepers. Keep up the great work!!!

  16. November 19, 2009 / 8:24 pm

Hazel, I am not sure how the birthday discount recipients are selected (I have heard being an anthro member helps) but if your bday month passes without getting one customer service is usually good about giving you one if you ask nicely.

Roxy, the Cerulean swing jacket is adorable on you. I hope you get it, it is really beautiful. As I saw the Wassailing Jacket I thought of Chloe doing her "grabby hands". She is going to die!

  18. November 20, 2009 / 12:05 am

Oh well, I just saw the comments, and yeah, Chloe is already in love with the Wassailing Jacket.
