Quick hits: Tops

Hmm…let’s try door number 4…

Anthropologie continues to release cute top after cute top. I appreciate that they have several options for the big trends. The Chinoiserie Frog Blouse ($78) is a softer take on band tees. To me, the tuxedo bib and thick black frog closures resemble the shutters on a farm house. The soft lilac color is a great choice too as it will layer with some of this year’s popular colors nicely — army green, cinnamon/rust/copper, and of course black.

For the first time in awhile, my usual size 6 fit me in Edme & Esyllte. I’d been sizing up for most of the year. This top is easy and flowy though so my true size worked well. There are plenty of little details to love too: the way the sleeve cascades into a gentle pouf around the cuff; the three-tiered hemline and the soft pleats in the back which give this top a touch of structure. Really, really well done Anthropologie. Couldn’t wait for sale on this one — purchased!

If I lived in a year-round beach climate, I’d love to add the Spry Boundary Top ($78) to my wardrobe. This C. Keer top has a gentle earthy vibe that honestly would fit in equally well at Anthropologie or its sister store Free People.

I grabbed a medium, expecting this top to be a bit big. Instead it fit rather snugly. I’m a bit confused about how this top is supposed to drape — should it be close to the body or flowy? My gut tells me flowy but my gut was also peeking though this top a bit, ahem. I like the floral design down the front but I’m not into the vertical stripes right over the hips. This top is pleasant but not really my style. Pass.

Betsy recently tried on the Fluttering Wrap Tunic ($78) in her guest reviews post. When I saw the top in-store I decided to give it a go myself. I was advised this top runs a bit large but decided to stick with my true size 6. Fei tends to be cut close around the hips. I’m glad I didn’t size down as there’s no way a 4 would have fit.

The color is pretty much perfect. And the silk material is wonderful. But I wasn’t in love with this top. The diagonal pleating above the waistline seemed to emphasize my bust and the bottom portion was drawing more attention to my hips then I’d like. This top just isn’t cut for my curvy body shape, so back to the rack it went.

I’ll just come right out and say it: I loved Deletta’s Prussian Peony Top ($88). The velvety soft flowers on one shoulder? Spectacular. The Grecian draping around the neckline? Fantastic. All in a dark grey color that reads blue in certain lights. It all added up to a content sigh from me.

My usual size small fit well in this top. I don’t know that I would wear this top for work — I see it more as a Happy Hour or weekend date night top. But I’m sure I could make it work somehow. Wishlisted!

Hmm. The Two-Story Cowlneck ($78) looks oh so adorable in the October catalog (shot at the top of this post) layered under a cardigan. When I saw the top in-store I predicted a weekend winner.

Instead I felt like I had a big billowy sack. My usual size medium was roomy to say the least. Sizing down to a small was in order but unfortunately there were none in-store. Like all Splendid tops this one was soft and well-made. I do like flowy tops but this one was a little too roomy for me. Back to the rack.

Even though every single one of Bayla Jane’s tops has the same shape I loved the Wildest Dreams Top ($98). I missed out on the Pitter Patter Blouse by waiting too long to pull the trigger. It was exciting for me to see another top in the same vein with a neutral pattern.

Though the Pitter Patter Blouse was numerically sized but the Wildest Dreams Top is alpha-sized. My usual size medium fit well. This top requires some special care — handwashing is recommended on the tag. I think it would be worth it though. The length is perfect, the cut is flattering and I found the sleeves nicer on this top than the previous versions. I love it and I want it. Wishlisted!

Bordeaux’s Echoing Folds Cowlneck ($48) got plenty of pagetime in this month’s catalogue. In-store though I found it was the green, not the beige, that was calling to me. What an oddly springlike color!

I initially tried my usual size medium but found it felt kind of tight. So I sized up to a large for these pictures. It was still rather form-fitting on me. Curiously the cowlneck really wanted to settle over my right breast no matter what I did. Annoying! I didn’t feel so bad when I noticed the top did the same thing in the model shots online. It’s a very odd quirk this top has. Draping issues aside this modal top has a lot going for it. This top is begging to be layered under a blazer or cardigan for winter. How can I say no? Wishlisted for sale.

I would never have guessed that the Deuxhill Cowlneck ($88) is an Odille top. I let the cowl fall in its naturally preferred state, though it can be positioned and closed in a number of ways.

With the flowy bottom you’re safe to size down. I tried on a 6 (my usual size) and found it bordering on too big. I would buy this top in a 4. I was drawn to the purple for its rich color and appealing versatility. The sleeves are my one quibble with this top — wish they were an inch or two longer. Wishlisted for sale time.

I love that Anthropologie is carrying Three Dots! Their layering tops are things of wonder that last forever. So of course I had to give the Thick & Thin Henley ($68) a whirl.

I tried on the moss version in my usual size medium. The fit was fine — the thing stripes weren’t too bad over my hips which allayed my main concern. I like the mix of thick and thin stripes which are designed to slim. I think this top did the job though I’d like it better under something (like the Choose Your Path Cardi ($98, review here) perhaps?) than by itself. Undecided on this one…wishlisted for now.
