Reviews: Bobine Sweater Tunic, Ruched Pointelle Cardigan, Crocheted Heirloom Pullover, Leopard Moto Jacket, Hearth Hoodie, Verona Cardigan, Lacestitch Cardigan

It’s February, it’s snowing out, and all I want to think about right now are nice, cozy sweaters and perhaps a nice fire to keep me warm. Inside, a mix of Anthropologie sweater reviews from both full price and sale, including the Lacestitch Cardigan ($118), above.

Bobine Sweater Tunic ($128) by Angel of the North, TTS
Style #: 29619095; cream (012)
★★★★☆

Note: For sizing reference I am 34-29-38, size 6/M in tops and sweaters with a 34D cup. I am 5’8″.

Lord have mercy, I’m giving an acrylic sweater 4 stars. Such is the power of the cuteness of the Bobine Sweater Tunic ($128). The embellished neckline made of appliqued yarn is nice. Nicer still is the back, where an upside-down fleur de lis makes for the perfect waist-defining accent. The sweater would work either casually or as a top layer over a dress or leggings. Although thick I think it would also work well on chillier spring and fall days.

The nice thing about the acrylic is that this sweater won’t pill. It’s not very soft but it has a nice structure to it; I didn’t feel like the sweater would stretch out over the day as some wools do. I felt no itch factor. I’m in a small for the photos above but would want my usual size medium to buy. The small’s too tight. The sleeves are somewhat long, hitting below the wrist. I love the “tunic” length which for me means hitting below the hips. The wider neckline is perfect for framing a small necklace, or leave the sweater on its own with the beautiful neckline decorations.

A lovely sweater in a classic shape with a bit of a twist. Exactly what I want! The length is a bonus. Wishlisted!

Ruched Pointelle Cardigan (now $60) by Rosie Neira, TTS
Style #: 2939559; taupe (023), black (001), or red (060)
★★★☆☆

I wouldn’t rely on the Ruched Pointelle Cardigan (now $60) to keep me very warm but it does make a beautiful outfit accenting piece. I chose the taupe version to try on because it was the lightest color, but in truth both the black and red versions are much prettier. They just didn’t photograph very well. Like the Bobine Sweater Tunic above this Ruchelled Pointelle Cardi is made from an acrylic mix. Whatever Anthropologie’s acrylic is, it’s not scratchy which is nice. The cardigan has thinner boxy material with plenty of open pointelle work along the front placket, the bottom hem and the wristline. The buttons are a slightly iridescent plastic in the same color as the cardi, and the button holes are easy to pass through without being too big.

This cardigan fits nicely through the shoulders, has a ruched waist and eases slightly for the hips. I’m in my usual size medium which fit great. Close to the body but not too tight. The v-neck might be a little low for some people. I found it the perfect dip. Not a fan of this taupe color, but the black is in my sights.

On sale this sweater is a great transitional season option. I’m probably getting the black. In my cart as we speak!

Crocheted Heirloom Pullover ($88) by one.september, size down
Style #: 30170088; light grey (006) or ivory (011)
★★★☆☆

I love the Crocheted Heirloom Pullover ($88)! So much so that I made it part of my birthday haul. But that love does come with some caveats. This cotton-polyester sweater has a very loose knit, especially on the sleeves, which makes it quite fragile. It’s all too easy to snag this on something and find yourself with a hole. If you don’t mind the fragility then this sweater is exceptional. There’s tons of lace applied in all different ways to a heathered pattern with a loosely knotted neckline. I liked the look of the ivory color but was enamored with this “light grey” which reads as periwinkle to me — purple with grey tones. It’s nice and long, hitting below the hips. The sleeved come down over the hand, about a third of the hand will be covered.

Although not very thick this sweater is surprisingly warm. No, it’s not going to keep you warm in 30 degree temperatures. But as a layering piece I’ve found it holds in body heat without suffocating me. As I tend to quickly vacillate between hot and cold in the winter this is a nice treat. As with most one.september pieces I sized down to a small from my usual medium. I found this sweater to be very slimming; I think most of the online reviews complaining that this sweater is boxy or bulky are just in the wrong size.

This one’s already in my closet in the light grey. I might pick up the ivory once this sweater hits sale! Recommended if you don’t mind a piece that needs some TLC. Great to see this sweater is under $100.

Leopard Moto Jacket ($88) by Bordeaux, size up
Style #: 30695225; grey motif (008)
★★☆☆☆

Bordeaux, once a very consistent brand for me, has lost any sense of consistency recently. This is the Leopard Moto Jacket ($88), which looks super cool. On the rack. On a person, especially a tall one such as me, it is short, boxy and not very flattering. Look, I love all things fake leopard. And this jacket has the advantage of being one of the softest things I’ve ever touched. (Rayon, cotton and spandex somehow.) When I saw this jacket I was all, oooooooooooo. But then when I tried it on I was all, oh.

Let’s start with the good: ultra-soft. Nice long sleeves. Semi-warm. This will be a good spring or fall jacket. Then we depart to the cons: The bottom cuts across my widest part. There is no shape to this jacket. The neckline is soft and floppy and crinkles. The asymmetric zip is not diagonal enough. This is basically an $88 sweatshirt. Come again?

I tried on my usual medium and it felt constrictive. I’d size up to a large to buy which should help a bit with the length. But…I’m not sure I’d like the large any better. I think there’s a reason that Anthropologie only shows this jacket open on the product page. Closed up it’s just not quite right. Pass.

Hearth Hoodie (now $40) by Sleeping on Snow, TTS
Style #: 29235264; black motif (009)
★★★★☆

Short? Yes. But also awesome. This is the surprisingly warm Hearth Hoodie (now $40), a coat that’s susceptible to pulls but also winterfully wonderful. It has an awesome furry hood that covers my head without falling over my face. The zipper has a cute multi-yarn pull. And there are two front coin pockets which hold a doggie doo bag in one and my keys in the other perfectly. (Beware using it for a MetroCard though, as mine almost popped out a few times.)

Anthro classifies this as après-ski and I could not agree more. It’s definitely got that lodge feel. The thicker knit at the shoulders, sides, wrist and hem keep in warmth nicely. The front textured knit is more airy. I am in my usual size medium here. The jacket loosens somewhat as you wear it. I had also tried on a large, but didn’t get the extra length I wanted. So I stuck with the medium for purchase.

The jacket is lined, with a cotton lining on the body and a more wooly lining in the sleeves. I’m very itch-tolerant so this didn’t bother me but a friend of mine felt the sleeves were too itchy for comfort. You can layer a long sleeve top underneath to help with this. I got caught in the rain one day in this jacket and was quite pleased with how dry it kept me, all things considered. It’s not waterproof but it seems water-resistant. The threads of the multi-toned knit are prone to snags. Beware!

Here’s how the coat looks open:

Wonderful for a winter evening out! I bought this sweater early in January at first cut price. Now on second cut, it’s well worth it! Sold out online (but popping back often), I still see plenty of these in the NYC area stores. I’m sure they’ll go quickly now though so better hop on this one you little ski bunny!

Verona Cardigan (now $60) by Dolan, TTS
Style #: 29373636; black & white (018)
★★★★☆

Pictures simply do not do the Verona Cardigan (now $60) justice. This ultra-comfy stitch-offset cardigan was a total surprise purchase for me, but I love it so much! I was scouring the sale section for an open cardigan to wear over dresses on a night out and this one fit the bill. It’s by no means soft, more of a rough polyester with cotton mixed in. There’s a foldover strip on the neckline and the stitching purposely does not match up at the seams. There are two side pockets for hand-warming.

Although many of the online reviews recommend sizing down, I went the other way. I sized up. I’m in a large for the photos above. I prefer the way the oversized look works over a night out dress. And it also makes this cardi a comfortably sexy around-the-apartment piece. In my normal size medium the shoulders did not hang quite as low as they do in the large in the photos, and it was about an inch shorter. The large hits me high thigh.

Right now this sweater looks to be sold out online in regular sizes except XL, with petite sizes available. But I saw plenty in stores so call around if you like this and your size is sold out online. It’s comfy, surprisingly sexy and on-trend without being trendy. The perfect combination if you ask me. This one’s already part of my closet.

Lacestitch Cardigan ($118) by Angel of the North, TTS
Style #: 30730071; ivory (011), terra cotta (086), grey (004) or mint (102)
★★★☆☆

On the same shopping trip that I purchased the Verona Cardigan I also picked up this Lacestitch Cardigan ($118). I was having trouble deciding between the two even though the styles are very different. This Lacestitch is soft, with an open placket and back. It has large open pockets and is of a lighter-medium weight. The front is slightly shorter than the back. The back reaches just about down to my fingertips. The sleeve ends right on the wrist.

I’m in my usual size medium for these photos. It felt very comfortable on. Not super soft, but somewhat there. The white color is vibrantly white! These photos are practically glowing. I like how it sits on the body and there is a romantic feel to this. But in comparison to the Verona, I could tell this wasn’t quite what I wanted right now.

This cardigan is pretty and I think it would be a good sale pickup. It’s going back to the store for now.
