Guest post: Reviews by Betsy

Please join me in welcoming Betsy back with another round of guest reviews. Betsy has different taste than I do in Anthro items, which is fantastic as far as I’m concerned because she opens my eyes to items I might not have considered otherwise. Hi Anthro peeps! I’m excited to be contributing with a round of guest reviews! Let’s not waste any time – on to the pretty!

My first pick was the Belladonna Top ($128) by Karen Nicol.  I tried a medium, which fit really well.  This top caught my eye right away because it features a lot of my favorite looks – ¾ length sleeves, a scoop neck, cute details.  Once this one was on, I felt as though I’d been transported to an episode of Mad Men – in a fun outfit sort of way, not in a chain-smoking, cheat-on-your-husband way.  The checkered pattern of the leaf detail and the pink rickrack stitching are super cute, and the top is a pretty light petal pink.  Very flattering and sweet!  My only beef is that this top has some viscose in it, which made it a bit scratchy.  Other than that, adorable and work appropriate!  Wishlisted for sale, ‘cuz I think $128 is a bit much for a Mad Men sweater.

Anthro sent me an email the other day, proclaiming that the Deuxhill Cowlneck ($88) by Odille is “the blouse to beat.”  I had to check this baby out, so I tried the purple in a size six.  I’ll admit – it really is a winner.  The silk has a beautiful drape.  It looked good tucked in, and it looked good untucked.  The big, button cowlneck is almost too much fun.  Look at everything you can do with it!  No joke, at one point I had it up over my head like some sort of awesomely silky hood, a la Liv Tyler in Lord of the Rings.  Even that looked awesome.  Though there’s a lot of material in the front, the top is magically fitted and slimming on the sides.  Much love.  This just moved to the top of my wish list.

Next up was this dress ‘o mystery ($168).  The label has a gold leaf stitched onto it – not sure of the brand.  This was a size 8, and it definitely ran big.  It was surprisingly loose pretty much everywhere.  Lately in dresses I wear an 8 or even a 10, but I think I could definitely pull off a 6.  If I’d had the right size, it would probably have fit like a glove – it’s shaped to curvier bodies.  The dress is silk in a lovely midnight color, with longer sleeves, a nice lining, and a drapey neckline.  I love the pattern, too.  There’s a little gather at the waist on the right side.  It’s beautiful and could be great for work (knee length), especially with a wide belt.  Yep, really pretty, but at $168 (is it just me, or are Anthro’s dresses getting spendier?) this one will have to wait for sale.

My next choice was the Fluttering Wrap Tunic ($78) by Fei.  Hmmm… why does this look familiar?  Where have I seen it before?  Oh yeah! This top is a dead ringer for the Rinzu Robe, which is hanging in my closet (sale WIN for $19.95!!).  Except a little shorter and in a solid color.  I guess Anthro realized lots of people were wearing the robe as a dress, and decided to come out with this blouse version.  I’m not complaining, ‘cuz I love wrap tops.  FYI – light red is not a good description of this color, and the photos don’t do it justice, either.  It’s gorgeous!  I tried a six, which was flattering, if a little big in the bust.  Oh well, can’t win ‘em all with the B cups.  I love this silk top.  Wouldn’t it look cute tucked into a pencil skirt, with big pearls?

Oh, Haute Skirt ($118) by Girls from Savoy – why do you taunt me so?  I tried this seemingly work-appropriate wool skirt in a 10.  My larger, um, booty area precludes me from wearing anything smaller in Girls from Savoy.  But while some skirts minimize said larger-than-average booty, smoothing it down and making it socially acceptable, this skirt… did exactly the opposite.  It had pleats on the back.  And when I turned around and looked at my backside in the mirror, the words, “holy crap!” popped out of my mouth.  This skirt made my butt look HUGE.  I am not exaggerating.  My rear looked like a giant bubble.  I dare not even attach the worst photo.  The only slightly redeeming thing about this was the tiny belt loops, which would accommodate a very sweet little skinny belt.  Hey Girls from Savoy!  Could you please sew those belt loops right onto a different skirt?  That would be just awesome.  Kthxbai.
