Spotted: Snakebite Belt alternative

Charlotte Russe at ShopStyle

With Anthropologie’s Snakebite Belt ($32) being backordered until…oh I don’t know…forever, our talented community has been looking for alternatives. In a tip previously reported by Danielle in this post, and brought up again by Fiona in this week’s Trade Market an alternate has been found at Charlotte Russe. It’s ostensibly called the Stretch Hook Belt ($7, shown above) but I like Fiona’s name much better…the Fakebite Belt.

Anthropologie at ShopStyle

The Charlotte Russe version comes in black, grey and white. If waiting for the real Snakebite Belt ($32, above) until April doesn’t float your boat the Charlotte Russe one may be the perfect substitute. Thanks ladies for the tip!!

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this!!! I have been looking for a cheaper alternative. Do you know how Charlotte Russe sizing is? I am a size 6 and don't know if I should order S/M or M/L.

  2. February 18, 2010 / 7:58 pm

Hmmm, well the M/L Charlotte Russe belt is 29" long, which is the same length of the small Snakebite Belt. My guess is you'd be more comfortable in the M/L.

ARG! Too bad the large isn't as big as Anthro's :(Great work by the community tho!

Speaking of knock offs…Shabby apple just came out with a dress that looks pretty much the same as the Caranday Dress only it has sleeves and is $88. Check it outhttp://www.shabbyapple.com/p-559-sheep-meadow.aspx

Unguren – CUUUUTE! I love parasols, I am having such happy flashbacks from that shot. The Limited also did their own k/o of the green Caranday here. Props to the Fashionism community for that tip.

I'm so confused by Anthro's backorder policy…i originally ordered the black and grey snakebite belts when they were backordered to 2/28/2010…now they are backordered through April? Shouldn't I still receive mine in February? I had ordered the St Germaine Chemise in XS (backordered 2/5/2010) and 5 days later got an e-mail stating my order was cancelled and it was unavailable. same thing with my Ice Capped Blouse….i'm beginning to think "backorder"=eventual cancellation in Anthro-language.

This is off topic but…I know why the Maeshowe Shirtdress went on sale two weeks ago… has anyone seen the Rainforest Morning Shirtdress on Anthropologie's website? It's the same dress, but with a green floral pattern. What is up with Lil, Moulinette Soeurs and Tracy Reese coming out with the same dresses every six months?

A Loopy Life – Very cool story! Love the belt too, it does look like the Snakebite Belt.Sharon – they might have more than one shipment coming in. I have had bad luck with Anthro's backorders in the past but recently it's much improved. I got the High Speed Cardigan off a backorder (it actually went on sale while backordered which was odd). I'm sorry to hear about your recent travails though.Lola – not sure about the other brands, but Tracy Reese released both colors of the Emerald Cascade/Ablaze Dress in the same collection. Anthro held the red back until now. Not sure what the reasoning is, maybe they felt these palettes weren't right for winter?

I dont know what an anthropologie customer is even doing shopping at charolette russe. let me know how that belt is holding up in 3 or 4 weeks.

Anon, I'm with you on fast fashion overall but in this case I'm not sure there is a distinction. It's certainly not fine leather…but it's not like the Snakebite Belt is either. It's made of polyester and elastic from China no matter which store you buy it from.

  11. February 18, 2010 / 9:15 pm

I think I will grab one to try. For $6.50 it is worth a shot since I cannot get the anthro belt.

  12. February 18, 2010 / 9:44 pm

roxy, thanks a million for posting this. i just ordered the black version.

I LOVE the look of the Snakebite but wasn't able to wear it because I was sized out (I needed an XS, which Anthro doesn't offer in this particular belt). The Charlotte Russe belt is a lot smaller, so I think it might work for me! Thanks so much for posting this :)))

  15. February 18, 2010 / 10:18 pm

Thanks, roxy. I ordered all three colors in the M/L.

  16. February 18, 2010 / 10:29 pm

I bought an earlier charlotte russe belt which was like snakebite and it broke on day 1. just sayin….

ohhh will find one immediately. I really like the idea of posting where to find cheaper versions of anthro items since their prices can be hard to digest.

Unguren,Are you still selling your Winston Skirt?

  19. February 18, 2010 / 11:32 pm

theres a large brown one at the anthro in the roseville, ca store.

Speaking of obtaining Anthro merchandise at non-Anthro locations: UrbanOutfitters.com and Anthropologie.com carry two of the same swimsuits at the same price. UO has a slightly different color selection, but they are the same suits. But shipping is free on the UO website where it's like $15 on the Anthro website. So if you are interested in the En Pointe Bikini or the Wild Watermelon Two-Piece you can try them on for free through Urban Outfitters.

The Fakebite (love it!) is smaller than the Snakebite (I have both, and wear a S/M in the Snakebite and a M/L in the Fakebite. It doesn't look as nice up close, but the buckle is quite a bit larger, which means it makes my waist look smaller (if that makes sense.)

While we're on the topic of Anthro lookalikes, a bold boutonniere-esque dress just popped up on Lulu's. It's called the <a href="http://www.lulus.com/products/Brownie+Points+Dress/19436.html" rel="nofollow">Brownie Points Dress and it's selling for $41 (I think there's a 15% code floating around somewhere too). It's not an exact match for the bold boutonniere, but it has the same rosette detail + stripey skirt thing going on. I haven't seen it in person so I have no idea on the quality. It runs a lot shorter than the Anthro version though. The small size is 33" shoulder to hem. It would be scandalously short on me so I'll be passing on it, but maybe some of the petite gals who missed out on the bold boutonniere would be interested?

thank you for sharing!i have never seen a snakebite belt in my local Anthro! this could be a great (temporary) alternative 🙂

  26. February 19, 2010 / 4:39 am

OT: but speaking of the caranday dress, I just scored one off ebay in a Size 6. I am normally a true size 4 in most anthro brands, so I am nervous that it will be big, although I read in reviews that CLC runs a bit small. Any feedback? And do you think it will be easy to alter if it is too big? TIA! And if I haven't said it before, love this blog 🙂

  27. February 19, 2010 / 4:51 am

jmoon – I found the Caranday to be TTS, so you might find it a bit big. I think it would be pretty easy to tailor. Which color did you get it in? If you end up not wanting to keep it, I might be interested in buying it off of you. 🙂

  28. February 19, 2010 / 5:02 am

Roxy, I got it in the red. Thanks for the sizing info! I am crossing my fingers it will fit, but will let you know if I end up not keeping it. It definitely deserves a loving home 🙂

  29. February 19, 2010 / 7:09 am

jmoon – I'm normally between a 4 and a 6 in Anthro dresses, but I had to go with a 6 in the Caranday dress because the 4 wouldn't zip over my bust. If you're a C-cup or larger, you might find that you're better off with the 6.

  30. February 19, 2010 / 12:42 pm

    jmoon, i'm normally a 2 or a 4 in dresses, but for the caranday dress i got a 4

  31. February 19, 2010 / 2:13 pm

Lola and Naomi's mom – thanks for the feedback. Now I just need to wait for it to get here and hope it fits!

  32. February 19, 2010 / 4:40 pm

Just saw a Medium Brown Snakebite at the Anthro in Reston, VA, if you are looking. The stitching was a bit ratty in the front, FYI. (So yes, Roxy, I'm with you about the quality!)

  33. February 19, 2010 / 5:18 pm

Hmmm thanks so much for posting this! I ordered myself another Snakebite after finally receiving the wrong size (after a three month wait!) in December. Hopefully this time it will come through. Fingers crossed!

Thank you to the anonymous poster who commented about the large brown snakebite belt in CA. It's now on its way to me. YEA!For those posters who want a large in the snakebite belt, I wanted to let you know that I picked up a fakebite belt in gray at CR today in a m/l. It stretches a lot. I wouldn't wear it with nothing over it as it is buckling a little in the back because it's a little tight. But because of the stretch it doesn't feel too tight, if that makes sense. I am happy how it looks with a cardigan over it, however. Hope that helps.Doreen

hey ya'll…i just picked up the gray fakebite at my local charlotte russe. i'm very pleased with it! Here are the differences: the leather parts are twice as big each as the snakebite, and the elastic is slightly wider. the material is not really discernably cheaper, but it does take a lot of effort to get the "teeth" to hook. they do hook, though. another tip: CR is majorly, blatantly, shockingly ripping off J. Crew right now…and i love it! i almost prefer some of their knock-offs because they have a softer, more feminine sparkly quality, since they're aimed at a younger crowd. see what i mean about the Crew…http://www.charlotterusse.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3945015

how does the gray color of the CR belt compare with the Anthro gray belt? It seemed much lighter on the CR website than the anthro one. Hoping someone can share their IRL experience.
