Reviews: Sun Grown Tank, Storybook Tank, Whorled Roses Tank, Mirthful Shell

I want to learn how to do the hairstyle that matches the top!

C. Keer’s Sungrown Tank ($58) caught my eye from across the store. I made a beeline for it and couldn’t decide which color to try on. I ultimately settled on the “ivory” because it would photograph well. Anthro, can we chat for a second? Are you anti-gold or something? Why is everything gold being called ivory this spring??!?

I tried on the small and it was an awesome fit. Close to the body but really flattering. I don’t know how I feel about the ruched diagonal seam across the front. It almost looks cool; it almost looks like a snag. The shirt feels rough and looks sparkly and it has an unfinished cotton neckline. This top is so incredibly cute. Wishlisted!

I was looking for the Ode to Spring Tank ($78) and could not find it, so I settled for the solid version. It’s the Storybook Tank ($68) by Little Yellow Button. Though it has a similar diagonally pleated hem to the Polaire Vest (and the same annoying kickout on the right side) it’s got differences too. For one thing, the front has no button snaps. It’s pullover style. For another it’s a good two or three inches shorter.

Some online have complained about the neckline. It is a bit wonky but didn’t bother me. The medium fit well and I like the flowers a lot. The length bothers me though. Wishlisted, but not in a rush to buy this one.

Little Blue Bird’s Mirthfull Shell ($68) has that easy flowy look that some will love and some will think makes them look pregnant. Personally I like the idea of throwing a cardigan over this and belting it for now and then wearing it over a pair of shorts later. Maybe I’m nuts though.

I could not find a 6 on the rack so I sized up one to an 8. I think this was actually a good idea because I wanted to keep the ruched bust loose. I think smaller chests (I’m a 34D) can size down with no problem. The shirt is a cotton-spandex mix that feels more like the latter. Still it will keep you cool in the warmer months. Back to the rack for now, will reconsider come sale time.

Goldenmeans had a funny post on the Whorled Roses Tank ($88) last month. Even with that post I was happy to try this one on. I grabbed the medium which fit well. Comfy, with a bit of room in the back but not enough to size down.

The 3-dimensionalness of this top is kind of odd but it will look good under a structured blazer, cardigan or jacket. I could also see it being nice as the top part of a BBQ party outfit (which I will promptly stain with ketchup). Still, there’s something a little less Anthro and a little more J.Crew about this outfit. To the wishlist to be pondered further.

I'm surprised that everything looked like I expected- though if that is good or bad has yet to be determined. At least I am not disappointed! 🙂

The Sun Grown Tank looks fantastic on you Roxy – so flattering! YOu need that one!I said the same thing last week about the Whorled Roses Tank – totally J.Crew. One of my readers called it Whored Roses, and I love that name..not a fan of that top in general.

Meli22 – Well, good that you're not disappointed. 🙂 Kim – Yes, that was Goldenmeans' post that I was referring to. Whored Roses Tank…groan.

That Storybook tank looks wonderful on you – I was in my local Anthro yesterday and totally didn't see it.Not sure how I feel about the Whorled Roses top – there's something unsettling to me about those florets … but the fit looks nice.

The storybook tank and the sun grown tank look awesome on you. I'm not a big fan of the Whorled Roses tank though, I feel it looks like they just glued stuff all over it.

I know how to do that hairstyle. If I had hair, I would tape it and show you how. I will try and explain it with words though.Basically, what you do is part your hair on the side. Then take a small section of hair in the front (the hair that is falling in your face unless you comb it back). Twist it at the root toward the back of your head. Only twist once or twice, depending on the length of your hair. While holding this twist, grab another small section from the front and do this again… adding the new hair into the previous twist. Again, remember to only twist this once or twice.Repeat this procedure of grabbing hair from the front and twisting it in until you have twisted the amount of hair that you want twisted. Secure to your head temporarily and then do the same thing on the other side of your head. Gather into a loose bun or ponytail in the back and pin in place with a few strategically placed bobby pins.Once you have done it a couple of times, it gets to be a really simple hairstyle. When I had long hair, it was a common hairdo for me.On another note, the sun grown tank looks great on you. I tried it on, but it is not for the boobless. 🙂

The Sun Grown tank looks terrific on you. I'm torn re: the Whorled Roses tank. I tried on a wedding dress with similar rosettes and all I could think was they looked like fabric tumors. Ugh. And yet I find myself drawn to it. Grrr. It's like I'm driven to make it work.

Haha, thanks for the shoutout on my silly name for the Whorled Roses tank Roxy 😉 It actually looks much better on you than I expected from the mannequin picture! In fact, I think you should get it at some point 🙂 But wow, you are totally right that this is far more of a "J.Crew piece" than an Anthro one.

I'm so excited about the storybook tank! I think it looks great on you, besides being a little short. Which means it should work for me! (in the ode to spring version, though)Have you seen the tic-tac-toe blouse IRL? I love it on the model but several reviews say it drapes/gaps weirdly over the bust. I'd really appreciate a busty gal's take on it, if you see it around!

Naomi's mom – why thank you! Don't hear that very often.Lisa & Maureen M – ha, I think Ellabel nailed it. They're little flower tumors! (I still love the top by the way. Feel free to continue making fun of it though.)Ady – OMG thank you soooo much for the technique! I will have to try this out tonight.goldenmeans – I think I may have to get it at this point. On sale of course, because I'm Whorled but not that Whorled!Hometown Queen – OK, that had me LOL'ing at work. Anon – I shall keep my eyes open for it. 🙂

I also think that the Sungrown looks cute on you. It's funny how many flower whirls are showing up this season.

The whorled tank is so J Crew. I love the 1st two tops on you. The deep purple color looks really good.

  17. February 9, 2010 / 6:29 am

Lady, you are rocking that Sungrown Tank! Buy it!

  18. February 9, 2010 / 11:51 am

And you now officially have me wanting that Sungrown Tank. Oh gosh, so pretty, and I LOVE GOLD! GOLD, ANTHRO, GOLD!And while we're on the subject of Anthropologie and their adjectives, I really wish they'd switch that Whorled Roses business. All I see is Whored Roses, Whored Roses, Whored Roses. *cries*

Maybe they meant whirled roses. They must've.
