Reviews: Two dresses and a dress-like cardigan

How pretty is this dress? Absolutely gorgeous. It’s the Floating Forsythia Dress ($148) by Girls From Savoy. Too bad this dress wasn’t available in-store to try on.

Instead I got this impostor. Oh sure it looks like the same dress and it’s labeled as the same dress but it’s not the same dress. First of all the v-shaped shoulder straps have been shortened by a good two or three inches, pulling the dress up closer to my neck. Secondly the soft fluttering skirt has been replaced by something less significant. I really wish I could have tried on the dress from the catalog. It looks beautiful.

This was my true size 6. With the highler neckline my chest looks droopy and the belt isn’t really doing anything for me. It also hugged my tush closely but, well, I didn’t mind that so much. The pressed chiffon has a gauzy feel to it. The dress is promising. I am not happy with the fit though. Back to the rack.

As many of the reviews on the product page state, the belt on the Longing-For-Yellow Dress ($158) by Moulinette Soeurs was changed after the product photo but before the store release. Instead there are three small buttons in the center front. The middle button on my true size 6 was such a pain to button that I left it undone. I will say this — the belt was the perfect circumference for me. It will be very hit and miss since the belt isn’t adjustable.

This dress has a classic shape. The pockets are laudable. The layer of crinoline underneath was all at the bum apparently given the far right shot. I liked how the dress looked on me (from the front anyway) but it’s a little too twee for my style. I only wish I had days to frolic in the fields in this one. Worth a shot but back to the rack for me.

Tabitha’s Bougainvillea Cardigan ($128) is amazing. Tabitha has had such awesome stuff over the last few months. I’m pleased with the consistent sizing as well. This cardigan is nice and long with ruffles aplenty. I tried on my true size medium and the fit felt good, though looking at these pictures I might size up to a large to buy.

I’m 5’8″ but for petites this cardigan could probably be a dress. You would probably need a slip or something underneath since the front is shorter. I like the open styling of the catalog shot as well. The material is soft cotton with just a hint of stretch. The 3/4 sleeves are questionable to me. Otherwise it’s pretty fantastic and the newest wishlist addition.

I love the Tabitha Cardi on you. I skimmed over it online, but now that I see it on you I'm having second thoughts. I really think that Longing for Yellow makes your waist look itty bitty, but that last shot does look a little wonky. Too bad. :(Thanks for the reviews!

I love the Tabitha Cardi. I tried it on in the store, but couldn't justify the $118 price tag. Will wait for it to go on sale.

I tried on that first dress, too. It fit kind of wonky on me. While it fit in the top (yay!), it kind of blouse out over my tush. I wanted to love it because it was one of the longer dresses Anthro has had recently.

Both the Bougainvillea cardigan and the Longing for Yellow Dress are really flattering on you! Maybe you'll reconsider the dress if/when it goes on sale…?

love the cardi. That is too bad about the dress. I saw it in store and thought it just looked cheap. Thanks for the great reviews

I just tried both of those dresses on and posted reviews- I had the same problems with the Floating Forsythia Dress you did – where's the gorgeous dress from the catalog? I hated this one – the fit was so odd and the material felt so cheap!I loved the Longing for Yellow dress and thought it might make a good 30th bday party dress. I think it looks great on you Roxy!Btw, I nominated you for an award the other day on my blog – maybe you haven't had time to read, but stop by and pick it up 🙂

I love the yellow dress and sweater on you! Can I ask if the material on the yellow dress feels cheap? I noticed online that it said it was made of polyester (among other materials), does it feel poly-ish? Does it even compare to the feel of Into the Night top?

Suzanne – I will reconsider anything that makes it to sale. ;)Kim – Apologies for not acknowledging sooner. I did see the award, thank you! I have not had a chance to write a post on it yet though.Soraya – Hmm, I don't remember thinking the dress felt cheap. Normally I am sensitive to overly poly stuff.

I hit my Towson MD Anthro today and they had all of the sale items moved out to the floor, it was a major cleanout. Not much there, it had been very picked over. A few Garnet Glow Dresses and a couple of other odds and ends. There were not too many new things on the floor yet although I saw a couple of things that didn't appear to be on the web yet. One dress had a yellow print with black lace and it looked really pretty on the rack. There were also several Felted Lei Cardigans in size S if anyone is looking.

The Tabitha Cardi is a true-Anthro unique piece, and it looks good on you. I agree with you that the Longing for Yellow is slightly off and it gives me a stepford-wives kind of feel, but again, I adore the color and fluff of it. And as for the Floating Forsythia – major disappointment.

Roxy-I'm glad I'm not the only one! I tried the dress on during a recent shopping trip to Anthro (sadly, I get to one maybe once a year…one of the many reasons I love your site!). I coveted it when I saw it in the catalouge and was sooo confused in store. Such a disappointment.

I love that Tabitha cardi from your pics… can't wait to see it irl.

That cardi is something I may not have really noticed online, until I saw it on you. You look faaaaabulous in it. I think the M is perfect – I wouldn't size up.

Thanks for the sale report TeriLynn13! I should mention that all 3 NYC Anthropologies have huge sale sections at the moment. I noticed Drenched Helenium Tees in all sizes at both Soho & Rockefeller Center, plus Soft Drape Tees and some Flocked Chiffon Blouses. For dresses Soho has the best options right now. Plenty of Skirted Peacoats in Soho too. DEA & Sweet Tea in Seattle – I agree about the Tabitha cardi. I love it because it's such an Anthro piece, and so different from anything else out there.Amanda – I am sad to hear that you too liked the dress but wasn't happy with the look. So much lost potential there. Thanks PFP! OK, I won't size up. I am carrying around some extra holiday pounds at the moment. Not that I really care because December is the one month I indulge in chocolate. Totally worth it.

Has anyone tried on the Wright Dress yet? Went to my anthro today and ran around looking for it, but no luck. Even asked a SA; she looked at me like I was nuts and said "we don't have anything like that here" :(I just want to know how it fits in the bust and if it's really poofy. I think it's such a cute, whimsical dress for spring.

    OMG THAT CARDIGAN!!! AMAZING!!

I wonder why they switched the belt on the Longing For Yellow Dress. I think it's really disingenuous to have a product shot that looks different from the product that you're selling! I was one of the reviewers on the Anthro website who was angry about the switch in belts. I would have seriously considered buying it (even though it's a little Stepford Wives-esque for my taste… the flattering fit is what won me over) but I really hated the way the belt looked in the back with that horrible piece of black elastic. It reminded me of a cheap Halloween costume belt.

Oh, so sad about the Floating Forsythia dress, I was so smitten with the catalog image. I bet they put the model in a dress 2 sizes too big and stuck about 100 pins in the back to achieve the fluttery skirt/longer neck strap effect…I hate when catalogs do that! On the other hand, Anthro does change things in production pretty often (and clearly they did for the Longing-For-Yeloow dress), so maybe I am just unfairly blaming the catalog stylist!
