Attn NYC Anthro fans: Anthropologie’s coming to Chelsea Market

photo illustration courtesy of Racked

Oooh, this is interesting. According to the New York Post by way of Racked, Anthropologie’s next NYC location will not be inside the Hearst Tower as previously reported. Instead, it’s going to be in Chelsea Market!

So first the reality check: NYC is completely Anthro spoiled. I know this. Chelsea Market is in the heart of the Meatpacking District and there are awesome sample sales within the Market (not to mention a Hale & Hearty, which is the best soup ever). Now for the starry-eyed take: I’m conflicted about this. I was really hoping to see an Anthropologie in Financial District for completely selfish reasons. This means the closest Anthro to me will remain the Soho store on West Broadway. On the other hand Chelsea Market is very convenient for me via subway. And I’m thoroughly excited to hear about a new Anthro in the city. I hope it carries shoes.

While I’m giving Racked since link love, here’s a funny vignette from them the other day on Anthropologie’s trash situation. There’s nothing the staff can do about it unfortunately but the white bags mixed with the white windows does make for a pretty odd sight.

Where would you like to see the next Anthropologie store open? I for one still can’t believe that my old stomping grounds the Danbury Fair Mall (Connecticut) doesn’t have one. And Fort Collins, Colo. Please show my college town some love Anthro!

I can't wait to hear if your newest store will have shoes! When I did my Anthro orientation for the new store, I was told none of the new Anthro locations in Illinois will be stocking shoes. Apparentely they don't sell well enough in stores, so they put the kibosh on that. Boo 🙁 I find it hard to believe too.

Oh wow! And like Kim, I would like to see if they will carry shoes. I have notice lately that the Anthro store in DC that carries shoes is starting to cut down on the styles they carry. I hope they do not stop carrying shoes.

Roxy, I didn't know you are a Ram alum! I've been reading your blog for a little while and am surprised to find another Coloradoan. I myself am a Buff alum (I know I know rivals!)and recently moved away from Colorado. I was excited when they put an Anthro on the 29th street mall in Boulder but alas, I don't live there any more. Love your blog!!

Meghan, I am a Ram indeed. My sister is a Buff too so I think we can call it a friendly rivalry, except of course during the Rocky Mountain Showdown. I still have a bunch of friends out there so I try to make it out a few times a year. The 29th St Anthro is quite lovely. Wish that was there when I was in school!

Maybe the shoes might sell better if they placed them better in stores…At the Georgetown store in DC the shoes are all the way in the back in the fitting room area. I hardly make it all the way back for a peek.

pentagon city mall right outside of dc in arlington VA! I know my area is pretty spoiled in terms of anthro locations, but they are all kind of a pain in the a$$ to get to. G'town doesn't have a metro stop, and don't get me started on the traffic to get to the tysons or rockville locations. We need a metro friendly anthro! pretty please? The mall is 10 minutes from my apt and I promise to spend lots and lots of money…;)

ooh…roxy, thanks for the chelsea market news! you're right, as a downtown dwelling new yorker, i'm anthro spoiled enough as it is, but chelsea market would be the closest to me yet, not to mention-stroller-friendly! as a stay-at-home mom to a little one, those steps at soho and even 5th ave are a nightmare! i'm excited!

OMG, I my office is IN the Chelsea Market building! This is going to be TERRIBLE for my bank account. 😀

I wish an anthro would come to south alabama, but that is probably too much to ever hope for.

I would be much more likely to buy the shoes if I could try them on and see them displayed in pretty Anthro style. I used to work in Chelsea Market (offices upstairs). I wonder what it's replacing?

Ahhh, if only there were an UWS Anthro, my life would be complete. I guess I can settle for Rockefeller Center.

I'm there with you, Alabama Rachel and Oklahoma Anon. There isn't a single Anthro store in Northern New England (New Hampshire, Vermont or Maine). I could see Anthro being really popular in Burlington, VT or Portland, ME (two liberal cities with thriving arts districts, hip boutiques and lots of colleges nearby). Alas, myself and my fellow Northern New Englanders have to do most of our Anthro shopping by mail order.

It's stupid the Danbury mall doesn't have one yet. But I get all my Anthro clothes from Westport, Greenwich, and White Plains. At least no other girl's wearing them 😉

Okay, I really need to move back to NYC! Thanks for sharing this article 🙂

I would love to have one (somewhere) in Upstate! The mall in Victor – outside Rochester – has loads of luxury stores and high-end shopping, but no Anthropologie. Buffalo's not as high end, but just built a massive addition at Walden Galleria and got an Urban Outfitters… and there are not only shoppers from the area but also those that drive up to and including from Toronto.Sigh. Everytime I go to NYC and visit, I feel like a slack-jawed yokel. 🙂

actually, I think the Georgetown store is really hard to navigate in general. Overall I think one of the best laid out stores (that does carry shoes) is San Francisco – downtown – and at after Xmas sale time it is like hitting the lottery:) but then I also like the Rock Center store, as long as you can dodge wandering tourists with wondrous looks accidentally bumping into you…as Roxy has alluded to. Meatpacking District/Chelsea Market sounds nice…:)

the Rockefeller store carries some shoes (limited selections), but on a somewhat related note, be warned — stay away from Hale & Hearty!!!! They are known for uncleanliness, and in particular a friend told me she saw Chelsea shop run amok with VERMIN. YES.

Inside scoop: The Chelsea Anthro will not carry shoes. But it will have a big emphasis on the home department. It will also carry wallpaper 🙂

Thanks for the update michelle! Do you know when the store is opening? I heard late April, is that still right?

We are so thrilled to see all the cement tile in the new Chelsea location. We didn't supply the tile for this project, but we are in that business so we love to see applications which raise the public's awareness of this great timeless product. Lundy at Villa Lagoon Tile
