What a letdown: Verite Dress IRL

Allow me to qualify this post by saying I have seen the Verite Dress ($158) looking absolutely stunning on more than a few people. So take my review with a grain of salt, especially if you are below a size 6. For the slim, small and tall this dress is a winner. There’s a reason why this dress is backordered in small sizes online.

I had been waiting for so long for the Verite Dress to show up in stores! I was beginning to wonder if it would be an online-only item. You can imagine my excitement upon spying it last week during my trip. Squeals and happy claps ensued. I could barely wait to get it on.

My anticipation made my disappointment with the dress all the more bitter. I suppose I should have known: sheath dress + curvy body = the suck. Still I was hoping for a shape that would flatter and instead I got body hugging in all the wrong places.

I grabbed both a 6 and an 8 from the rack. I couldn’t get the 6 over my bottom. So it was on to the 8. I got the 8 on and zipped only to find that it was a mess. The photos above are the 8. The dress gets major points for fitting over my 34D chest fine…but that’s the only good thing I have to say. There was all kinds of room in my torso, yet the belt was HUGE. Once I had it tight enough around my waist there was way too much pulled through. I had to knot it to prevent it from looking like a stiff tail. In contrast to the waist space, the dress was so tight around my hourglass hips. There was lots of pulling across my hips, tush and thighs. This dress was the very definition of hot mess.

Still hoping for a miracle I grabbed a 10. Not only was that not much better in the hips/thighs, it was far too big on top. The photos directly above this paragraph are the 10. With a sad, defeated, grumpy disposition I gave the dress back to the fitting room staff. You can’t win them all I suppose.

I think this dress is best suited for ladies with minimal curves. You will most likely want to size down one size in this dress for that kind of shape. Petite frames may find this dress a bit too long for them as it hit me below the knees and I’m 5’8″. I still highly recommend this dress. I only wish it had worked better for me.

At least you're saving yourself money–I loved the dress when I got to try it on this weekend, and now I'm trying to figure out where the $150 is coming from

PFP – It really is quite fab. *shakes fists in angry defeat*Aberdeen – welcome! Glad you are enjoying it.Colleen – ha! That makes me feel a bit better, though I feel your pain. Perhaps an upcoming contest on a certain blog could ease your worries a bit…stay tuned. 😉

That is a beautiful dress still…i really thought that it would enhance the curves so that's a bit frustrating…i'm sorry! My only worry is that I have a short waist, so I guess I'll have to trek to Anthro to try this one on. Thanks for the review!

You're singing my song, sister. I tried this on last week and though I'm less curvy on top, there was no way this would be an 'office' dress–it hugs in all the right places, but a in far to pin-up-y way. Maybe if I were dressing up for Halloween as a secretary from _Mad Men_…

Awww I'm so sorry the dress didn't work out for you Roxy 🙁 I'll consider myself lucky that it worked for me. For what it's worth, I think it looks nice on you and probably better than you think it looks on yourself sweetie 🙂

I love your blog. I've been waiting for this dress to show up in stores as well and finally saw it yesterday! I tried it on and had the same problem with the waist…too much room and it the belt was too long!

I had the same problem!! I thought it might work, since it looks so structured, but I also bulge out in weird places. The bust is waaay huge, butt is too tight, and there is lumpy wrinkles on the waist area. Better luck for us with other anthro dresses!!
