Design behind the design

Among the many professions I dream of trying (pilot, actress, rock star, trapeze artist, superhero…) Anthropologie visual artist is ironically one of the less realistic ideas. So I was struck with both awe and envy when a reader pointed me to Ruthi Auda’s blog. She creates amazing displays for Anthros in California. Click on the Anthropologie label and you can see her latest creations from which I’ve plucked a few photos.

I adore the votive chandelier in the shot above. And the wood crates with the vase stencils? So good! The setting really adds something to the clothes around it. All of a sudden the Skywriter Dress ($188) is on my radar.

This looks like a roller coaster track but it’s actually a fire escape ladder?? Unreal. It’s ideas like this that keep me going into Anthropologie stores. It stacks up against even the outlandish displays of Henri Bendel or Bergdorf here in NYC. And really anywhere it gives Anthro a leg up over the likes of The Gap, J.Crew or the rest.

No lie, I’d love to have a similar setup in my own living room. I don’t know what it is about time but the multi-clock idea is currently my style drool du jour. And even though the couch is a masculine trim with a manly leather, it’s styled so well that it becomes gender neutral and it fits. Lovely. Ruthi’s bio (click bio on the main page) ends with this appropriate query: “What beautiful idea will she come up with next?” Indeed.
