OOTD: Joie de vivre

It’s been a few weeks now but I have to admit I’m still perplexed by all the Anthropologie hate cynics were spewing during their “Man Shops Globe” reviews. (You can read the venom synopses in this post if you so desire.)

“Anthropologie is naming your kid Emma.” Hmmph. First of all, if I have children they’re going to be boys. And I will not be naming any of said boys Emma, thankyouverymuch. Secondly, I have two friends with daughters named Emma and they are two of the cutest, sweetest kids ever. So suck on that Anthro haters! Oh and while you’re at it, you can add a third bullet to your Anthro venom diatribe: Anthropologie is taking smiley pictures of yourself in an outfit you really like. And not feeling one bit bad about it. (Maybe even feeling somewhat feisty about the whole thing.)

I love my Conch Shell Pencil Skirt. It was my first Leifsdottir buy — I even loved it enough to pay full price for it last spring. It gets its best workout on management meeting days at work. But I like the thought of being able to wear it out and about. Enter the Rare Bloom Tee ($58, review here) by Deletta. It’s dressy enough to pair with the skirt, yet the material is casual enough to dress it down a bit if needed. In this case I went the dressier route with tights and peep toes.

Know what else goes great with this outfit? The Elodie Lily Cardigan ($128). It’s a pink and purple show all the way, with a bit of dark grey courtesy of the tights. So now that I look a bit pretty, I’m going to go be rebellious somewhere. Or something like that.

Roxy – you look fan-freakin-tastic today and I love your cute little poses. You are really taunting me with the Elodie Lily Cardigan lady!!! I ache for it (I'm just waiting on you know what to kick in for me). I tried on the Rare Bloom Tee last night and LOVE it. It's so pretty on you. What size did you buy, because I thought it ran a bit big. Love the whole look. As for Anthro haters – I'm so used to it – they're everywhere. They just don't understand!!

None of these items are things I would have picked out for myself, but I just love how you put everything together. That's what I love about people's Outfit of the Day. You really get to see personality and combination that you wouldn't think of.I am really enjoying your OOTDs.

Hey Roxy– This is OT, but I just got my birthday discount in the mail. I know you frequent the different Anthros in NYC, so I wanted to know which you think I should go to to use my card…Which store has the best collection? Thanks!!

you look absolutely adorable! Loe your outfit!

Kim — it's a small. Deletta tops run large in my experience.Tien and ** Daily Lily ** — thank you both! I'm still kind of leery about the face time but it is fun presenting outfit ideas and getting suggestions.Anonymous — Congrats on the birthday discount! I hope you don't mind but I'm going to give you a complex answer. 😉 – If you want access to the newest items, go to 5th Ave.- If you want the best sale section, go to Soho.- If you want the biggest overall choice selection, go to Rockefeller Center. And if you want to be sneaky about it, you should go to all 3, put items on hold at the first two and then have a very nice employee at the third help you complete sales by phone for the items not at the third store so you can spread your discount to all three. But, uh, you didn't hear that here.

Roxy, the Rare Bloom Tee looks great on you. I bought it in turquoise last night. At first I had a hard time deciding between the two colors, but once I tried both of them on, I chose to go with turquoise. Although I absolutely loved both colors, the turquoise top was much more fitted than the pink one. It's really strange since both of them were size XS, but the pink top was definitely longer and looser. Perhaps, it was mislabeled as an XS, but there was no other XS in pink for me to try on.–Slava

Roxy, awesome lovely outfit! I love seeing someone put together great Anthro pieces in ways I hadn't imagined! As for the Anthro haters? I love Anthropologie. I also love comic books. Every Tuesday I like to go by Anthro to check out the sales, but every Wednesday I am at the comic book store (Wednesdays are new comic book day). I was at a comic book convention once held in the same center as a Beatles convention once. a bunch of guys dressed completely as Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts looked down a railing at the comic book atendees (many in costume) and said, "Look at those losers! Why don't they get a life!". In other words, everyone who acts all condescending about Anthropologie almost certainly has a hobbie, love, fetish, whatever that someone else can and does look down upon. I am sure Anthropologie would agree with the motto, "Rise above it". Thanks again for the fantastic blog!

"You really get to see personality and combination that you wouldn't think of."Yes! I love seeing different "takes" on the same item, it shakes up my imagination. Re: Emma and Zoe, funny, I shop at Anthro because all the Indian-influenced products make me feel at "home".

LOVE LOVE LOVE the first pic! The colors go so nicely together. I bought the cosettes but because of high maintenance/similarity compared to the spectator patent peep toes I returned them. loved the shade though and they look fab on you!

Wow, just checked out the post with the pompous, elitist critiques of Anthropologie."Anthropologie is for people who think France is pretty."Um.Really? 'Cause I lived in France for awhile, and yeah, I think it's kinda pretty. That comment was indicative of what was wrong with every single one of those scoffing "reviews." I fail to understand how enjoying a store with cute clothes and fun doodads can possibly be as nihilstically awful as these reviews make it out to be. As though somehow, by appreciating pretty things, Anthropologie patrons are worthy of scorn and ridicule for their evil materialistic ways. What I especially find laughable, however, and the reason that I can very easily write off each and every single thing those reviewers said, is the inherent hypocrisy in their comments. "The world is full of tacky impermanent things." Riiight. And someone who works at Salon magazine would never have anything tacky or impermanent in their home. "Anthropologie is dopey and banal." Heaven forbid, Mr. New York Observer, that you ever associate yourself with anything "banal." Both of these people seem to me like exactly the types who would scour the city for something completely unique… irony, much?Sorry, but uppity, condescending reviews like that really tick me off.

Hey hottie! You look awesome. That top is tdf on you. Great outfits 🙂

I love your outfit roxy!!! too cute! keep these ootd posts coming please! Also – wasn't sure where to report this but I got the laced dots sweater today and it is adorable and nicely done – the black detail is more lace than chiffon and is very firmly attached, so anyone with jcrewesque worries about unraveling should rest assured. I did just call though to order a size up. My normal size fit, but very closely – as in no draping whatsoever if that makes any sense. Plus it hit right at the waist (the product shots look longer). I'm 5'7" and would just like a little more length. So overall, I highly recommend, but advise sizing up for a looser fit (as in the model in the shots) and/or if you need a little extra length!

Roxy, I'm in love with the shorts and tights look you've been sporting. I read your review on the Short Story Shorts, did you get the chance to buy it? I want to order it but I'm a little worried about the pleats on the front…

  18. November 11, 2009 / 1:49 am

Ladies, thank you all for your lovely compliments. It really makes a gal feel good!Slava – interesting about the fit between the colors. I felt like the smalls fit consistently for me across colors but if quality control was lacking I wouldn't be surprised to hear others with your dilemma. Congrats on the buy, the turquoise is amazing.Suzi, such a great point and so true. And btw, I still love my superhero cartoons. Betsy, I felt the same way! I know it's not worth it to get all up in arms but I am just mad people would go out of their way to insult others. Gets me flustered.kater – thank you so much for the review! So glad to hear it worked for you and good to know about sizing up. Anonymous, the Short Story Shorts are currently in my cart, waiting for my next paycheck. My friend bought them and they held up very nicely over the day, with the pleats lasting from sit down to stand up well. I would say buy them…for $20 how can you really go wrong? Then again I'm a horrible enabler. 😉

Super cute! I need to figure out how to wear my teal top!

  20. November 11, 2009 / 6:15 am

@ Roxy-I love that top!!That skirt was at my Austin store today! Someone might wanna call to ask about it!

  21. November 11, 2009 / 7:37 am

GREAT outfit, Roxy! The Rare Bloom tee should be in my hot little hands tomorrow, I hope.I also don't get the Anthro hate. I mean, I myself totally have UO hate (can't stand the hipster trend and paying $100 for something that is thin, flimsy, and wrecked looking) but Antho hate? Eh. The thing I love most about Anthro is the wearability of their pieces- it's the only store I can go into, buy something, and know I will wear it for YEARS. In fact, I wore a top I bought nearly five years ago at Anthro the other day and it was still like new. They don't carry trendy items- they carry more unique items, I feel, and therefore those things seem stylish for much, much longer. Some of their items might be expensive, but I always get a great bang for my buck there!

  22. November 11, 2009 / 4:22 pm

I feel the same way as Chloe (and likely legions of other Anthro faithfuls) that the things I purchase there are both stylish and timeless! I have worn "old" Anthro items (3-5 years back) twice in the last week, and received so many compliments on those items as if they were brand-new and never worn before. The style seems to transcend time/trends and always be appropriate no matter the setting! So worth the extra money (and this is from a doctoral student with a very limited budget and a lot of clinical work with dress up needs)!

So cute, I love the color combo!
