Reviews: Tees and Tops, part one

Even as it’s becoming sweater season Anthropologie is instead stocking their stores with an abundance of knitwear. Maybe they know something about global warming that we don’t? I made it a mission last weekend to try on as many knit tops as possible. I got through 8 (plus some fabulous dresses coming up later this week). This is the first of two posts covering the shirts I tried.

The Torsade Tee ($48) was flying off the table of the Rockefeller Center Anthropologie. I’d hoped to try on the dark grey but only the red was left, and when I was there no mediums were available. So I squeezed myself into the small of C. Keer’s cute twisted top. It was close to perfect — just a bit too tight across my chest for comfort. My true size medium would have been perfect. I’m wearing a brown camisole under the shirt of my own, it’s not part of the shirt.

My expectations were low so this top exceeded them. I love the way it’s styled in the shot at the top of this post. The red is almost orangey. This shirt would look great under a cardi for now and by itself later. It’s a steal by Anthro standards though still a bit more than I want to pay for what it is.

Next up was the Beaded Path Tee ($68) by brands unknown. Here’s a pic of the tag. This semi-sheer top caught my eye in-store and pulled me over. It ended up being a total impulse buy. I tried on the medium which fit like a dream. The cinch in back creates such a flattering shape. The bead detailing around the neckline is an exquisite touch. I’m a little torn on how this top looks from the side on me. To be safe for work I’ll probably wear a cami underneath it.

The shirt isn’t totally see-through but I could see flesh color peering through near my hips and in back. I’m not sure why the material is so thin but this top is sure to be delicate. This is not a shirt that will tolerate being pulled on, tossed around or holding pins. Just as a warning.

The Cinched Shape V-Neck ($48) and its patterned cousin the Rose Sachet Tee ($48) are super comfy basics from Deletta. I sized down to a small with no problem in both tops and they seem to fit consistently. The buttons in the back are an odd touch to me — they create pouf in the back that I did not like. And would that really be comfortable against your chair all day? I think not.

From the front though this top is great. The cute v-neck ruching gives this shirt an adorable little touch. The sleeves were long enough to avoid the dreaded cap sleeve grandma arms. This is another basic that I like but would love at $29.

One more Deletta top in this set — this is the Adorned Tee ($88). Not to pick on the staff but this shirt had a stain on it — yuck. I tried it on anyway for the blog. The things I do! I pointed it out to the attendant and watched her just throw it back in the distribution basket anyway. Sigh.

I liked this shirt when it first appeared online but I was concerned the embellishment would look cheap in real life. Luckily it didn’t it all. It’s obviously sequins but 2009 seems to be the return of the sequins so we’re all set. Like the Beaded Path Tee it’s delicate and semi-sheer. A dark cami might be needed underneath. All the embellishment seemed well affixed and every shirt in the stack looked up to snuff — no missing sequins or anything like that. Very cute and on my wishlist.

thanks roxy! i went to anthro last night and tried on a billion things…none of them worked (which sometimes makes me relieved) except for the Night Blooming Dress, which was perfection and i'm gonna save my money for it. So I consoled myself by buying a purse on sale…can't remember the name but it's grey with brown leather straps and a yellow vine pattern. The Beaded Path tee also caught my eye in store..it's prettier and shimmerier in person. It definitely is delicate though, I noticed some wear and tear just from moving it around on the rack. When I got home the Weather Patterns Dress was back in stock in my size on the website so I made an online order and added the Torsade tee…I'm intrigued to see how it fits me!

Thanks for the great post, Roxy! I already ordered the Torsade tee, but thanks to you I will be shortly picking up the Adorned tee as well, it's gorgeous! 🙂

Hi Anon, I will keep an eye out for the Embroidered Fleur Tee. I have not seen it yet.CS12 – sounds like you had a good score. As you probably know I am in love with the Night Blooming Dress too. It really is perfection. Please let me know how the Torsade Tee works out for you — I love hearing how items work out for the community!Suzanne – LOL once again I enable. Please let us know how they work out for you. 🙂

Hi Roxy,Great reviews today; I just bought the Rose Sachet Tee (looks cute with the Anemone Bloom Cardi) and wore it yesterday. I only kept one or 2 buttons in the back done, and they didn't bother me at all. I find the top very flattering on you (and me too).I cannot wait to see your review of the From-the-Green cardi….I must have this but want to know if it runs small! :)Stacy

Roxy – have your local Anthro's been getting all of the newest arrivals lately? I went to the largest store, the State St location last night and they had nothing! I couldn't believe it! They didn't even have the Night Blooming Dress, which I tried last weekend at another, smaller location. So frustrating! That Torsade Tee looks pretty on you. My store had a bunch last Wed and as of last night, they were gone!

Great tip Stacy O, I will have to try that with the buttons. I am sooo excited to try on the From-the-Green cardi. Hopefully today or tomorrow.Kim, last week I noticed very few new items at 5th Ave. This week seemed to be better though. Don't know how accurate this is to Chicago but one of the NYC SAs mentioned that stores are overflowing between new stuff and stock that needs to be cleared out (sale, etc.) at the moment.

Roxy – yep, one of the managers I know told me they're getting new stuff in 4 days a week, but have no where to put it w/all the sale stuff, but then why not further markdown the sale stuff? That Leifsdottir Sprightly Skirt I want is still on first markdown for $129.95 and there's a ton left! Plus, the floor looked like it had plenty of room for new arrivals to me! Thanks for the update 🙂

Amen sister. Bring on the big $29.95 sale rack already!

No torsade tees left in grey at my store and only a handful of the red left. Tried on the red in M which is typically my size and liked it well enough to have a grey one shipped to the store. Thanks for the review.
