Styled: The Cerulean Swing Coat

Anthropologie at ShopStyle

This post is for Maria and Angela, who both requested outfit ideas for Tabitha’s beautiful Tiffany blue Cerulean Swing Coat ($128, review here).

For this first option we were aiming for a transitional day-to-night outfit. The goal was to put together something fun. When you’re looking for items to pair with the coat look try to avoid other light colors for the winter. Come warmer weather though light colors will be the way to go. The coat sits away from the body meaning a full skirt will work well, but make sure there is some kind of structure at the waist or else you’ll look bulky.

We chose a skirt that provides a nice pop of color and kept everything else in this oufit neutral. We kept the layer underneath a simple black since the skirt is patterned. The necklace keeps things interesting when you take the coat off. And the heels…well they’re Chie Mihara. What else needs to be said?

In this outfit:
Cerulean Swing Coat ($128)
All-Day Eddy Tee ($58)
Daisy Quarters Skirt ($248)
Stacked Smoke Heels ($388)
Starlit Stem Earrings ($28)
Stormy Sea Necklace ($48)
Equanimity Bag ($258)

Here’s a more casual option. This time around we experimented with shades of purple to play off the blue coat. Choosing a soft cotton shirt to go underneath keeps the look from getting too dressed up and the neckline is a nice feminine touch. Do you need to wear skinny jeans with this outfit? Not necessarily, but to keep the look tailored don’t do wide legs. You could also do capris or ankle pants in dark blues or black. We’d stay away from cords for this outfit. For jewelry, we layered a couple of light necklaces, purposely mixing gold and silver. This draws the eye up to your gorgeous face! (Not to mention the stunning coat, you lucky duck.)

In this outfit:
Martin & Osa Mesh Knots Swaggy Necklace (now $18)
Betsey Johnson Snowflake Illusion Necklace ($42)
Cerulean Swing Coat ($128)
J.Crew Ruffles and roses tissue tank ($43)
Chelsea Ultra Slim Moto Jeans – Joe’s Jeans ($228)
Coccinelle JD5 13 Blondie Hobo ($395)
Subtly Sparked Heels ($148)

So ladies, what do you think? Do you own this coat? Thinking about buying it? Any other styling suggestions?

I LOVE the looks!! And I LOVE that you are doing this!!! Wonderful idea and it really helps me with styling tips, not only for this piece, but other similar styles in my wardrobe. As a mom of two who is "older" than most of you it helps to give me a sense of style! Bravo!!!!

Roxy: this is a great idea and is sooooo appreciated. I want those Chie Mahara pumps so badly and to see them in one of your stylings again is driving me crazy. Not sure about the sizing though. Do they run TTS or small? My resolve is weakening for them especially since my size is now back in stock 🙁

I love these outfits! I don't own this coat, but I'd like to. 🙂 What would you think of pairing it with a pencil skirt? Maybe the J. Crew Perfect Pencil Skirt in Cinnamon Stick? I must give a shout out to the Post-Fab Princess because, ever since seeing her style the skirt with the teal Plaza Cardi, I have not been able to stop thinking about it! Anyway, since the coat sits away from the body, perhaps a body-skimming pencil skirt would work? I'm thinking a lacy cream-colored cami underneath the coat would be nice too.

beth – what an awesome first comment. Glad you like it!Bronzi – I have not tried on these particular Chies but I have found the brand to run true to size in the past. I am also caving towards these shoes, they might be my only December buy.Autumn – I love the Cinnamon Stick color so much, and I live for J.Crew's pencil skirts. My concern is that particular skirt may be too long to pair with the coat. It might end up looking matronly. This Ann Taylor skirt isn't a color I'd recommend, but the length is what I'd look for — an inch or so above the knee. Hope that helps.

both of these stylings are fantastic! I love that daisy skirt (I just tried it on and reviewed it myself last week) and would never have thought to put it with a jacket like that.this styling idea is really great- thanks so much for doing it!!

Roxy, that does help! Taking another look at them, I could see how they may end up looking matronly together. A shorter skirt would definitely be better.

Cute Polyvores. I have a similar jacket from BR from last year…similar color & everything. This is great. I didn't think to try it w/a skirt. ITA that it can easily look matronly.

I love both looks. The coat is on my wishlist and it's making its way closer to the top! I really appreciate this and I love that you not only post the outfits, but explain why they work. This is so helpful! THANK YOU!

Wow, plaza cardi in teal with cinnamon stick JC pencil skirt? Cute idea. I have that JC pencil skirt, but will now see how it looks with the teal Rare Bloom tee. Need to figure out a cardi though, but I have a off white cute on from AT. This Styled thing is great!

Roxy: Thanks for the sizing tip. There are no stores near me with shoes and I live near 3 stores! The Chie Manhara will probably be my holiday gift to myself in December.

Roxy: I saw the size 9 Chie Mahara's are out of stock again. I wasn't sure about the 8.5 or the 9 so this forced my hand since I don't want to miss out on them. Yes, the dreaded out of stock notice. Hopefully I will indeed get them and will then report back on the fit. The reviews are mixed as to sizing, but I realize it all depends on ones own feet and perception.

Thank you for this post. You know, I NEVER purchase anything at Anthropologie full price; usually all my favorites eventually go on sale. However, I may just have to pull the trigger now on that Cerulean Swing Coat after seeing it on someone with my body type! Thank you also for the Polyvore styling. One request: Would you so very 'kindly please please review the Simply Lovely Sweaterdress'? Thank you again.

Gah! Terrible news about the Chies Bronzi. Hopefully they will either come back into stock or show up somewhere else. I'll keep a lookout in stores for them, I'm also still waiting for the Neat & Sleek Boots to hit stores.Hydra – I should have a review of the Simply Lovely Sweaterdress this week. I have to go to Soho tomorrow to make a couple of returns so I'll try it on if it's still there for a review. 🙂
