Reviews: A whole lotta meh

And now, for a magic trick. Nothing up my sleeve! Notice in the photo above how the Seasonless Stripe Button-Up ($78) by Odille appears to hit the model mid-hip! But then, presto!!!

Even on the tall among us this shirt magically grows by 5 or 6 inches in length! Is the model a giant? No! Does she have on a sample version that was shorter? (Possibly.) But probably no! With a bit of styling magic courtesy of the recently renamed Tall Tales Belt, Treetop ($68) the shirt appears to be normal length! Thank you, thank you, I’ll be here all day.

Seriously though, when I saw this shirt in-store I thought it had to be a different shirt by Odille. But unless there’s a tunic version hidden on the website I’m sure this is it. I don’t really mind the extra length — it was just so very unexpected based on the model shot. If you are petite this could very well be long enough to wear as a shirt dress. Or I could re-enact Risky Business if that wasn’t so played out already in those recent commercials.

The good: this shirt is really slimming from the front. I look long & lean! I like that! I also look like I stole my much taller boyfriend’s shirt…but that’s for another post on a different blog. The bad: the little front pocket is way too high. It makes my chest look droopy. And from the back, there’s a definite lump above my rump. The fabric of the shirt is shaped for a straight dude-like figure and that helpfully gathered right above my bottom. Awesome — or not. I think this top would make a great layering piece but it wasn’t a must-buy. The photos above are my true size 6.

The tour of bleh continues with this tank which is currently hidden on Anthropologie’s website. I’m calling it the Remember the J.Crew Rolling Ruffles Tank! Ok, really it’s the Tutu Tank ($68). I had high hopes for this top. It’s a dark colored tank top; it has tiered ruffles of different opacities and fabrics and it is slightly coniferous-reminiscent or maybe confectionery. Unfortunately I didn’t like it much on. I have on the medium in the shot above. My chest and my hips are pretty much in proportion so it’s always crazy to me when a top makes me look small on top like this. It’s almost a tent effect. The fabric felt fine and the craftsmanship was pretty good. I just didn’t like it.

Here we have the Foliage Fireworks Top ($98) by Gemma. I had previously tried this on under the purple Gumshoe Sweater Coat ($168) and liked it. I went back to try it on by itself and…well, how can I put this? I think I look like a Vegas waiter. Or! I think it looks kind of like something Neil Diamond would wear on tour. Singing “Sweet Caroline.” I’m so convinced of this I started humming it to myself while I had the shirt on in the dressing room. Who doesn’t like Neil Diamond? It’s the necktie that made me feel this way. Combined with the print of the shirt it’s a bit much. Or maybe it’s just because I’m wearing a small but probably need a medium. I believe in this shirt’s potential. I’m hesitant to pay full price though.

Roxy – thanks for posting the foliage fireworks top, I have been wondering if I should pull the trigger on the full price or wait it out…I think I will wait it out. I also commented about the Frilled and Thrilled cardigan in wine in a small. I will call the soho store this morning and see… Thanks for everything!

roxy you crack me up! I ADORE the foliage fireworks top and bought it during free shipping, but now I'm going to think of neil diamond every time I wear it…I'm thinking with jeans for dinners out, and with black pants etc to make boring work wear more fun!

Hi Roxy,Loved this post, you make me laugh! Wondering if you've figured out their sale cycle yet? How soon do things get marked down? Had similar thoughts about the ruffle tank: JCrew!

beachykeen I wish I knew! It used to be pretty predictable…website sale updated on Tuesdays and items became eligible for sale 90 days after release. These days the website sale is updated Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or not at all and some items go on sale after 60 days while some never seem to go on sale at all. I think 2009 is just an anomaly, but if anyone else has insight I'm all ears.
