Styled: Somerset Cape

And we’re back! After a too-long hiatus I’m excited to be back with more styling posts. You all have been patiently waiting on your requests which the gals and I truly appreciate. This post is for Kim, who requested styling options for the Somerset Cape (no longer online).

I love capes! I own one myself — a grey one that I bought a couple of years ago. It’s a tricky shape to work with though. We started off with a more casual option. Really you can wear whatever you want on top here. We chose a turtleneck for a bit of color at the neckline and a coordinating cardi. The more important shape is your pants. You don’t want to do big flares or wide legs with a cape as it will make you look bulky. We recommend looking for either a straight cut or at most a slight boot leg. Personally I like a dark, uniform wash but lighter duds are coming back into fashion so expect to see more of those soon.

To continue on the dress-down tip we added these amazing Frye knockoffs from Target (which I heard about courtesy of the incomparable Fabulous Florida Mommy) and a simple crossbody satchel. Understated gold jewelry polishes off this weekend gal on the go look.

In this outfit:
Somerset Cape (similar here and here)
Blushing Bouquet Cardigan ($88)
Splendid 1X1 Turtleneck ($50)
Joe’s Ryder Honey ($170)
Katherine Leather Engineer Boots ($50)
Here, There Everywhere Bag ($178)
Free Rein Necklace ($48)
Pave Posts ($24)

For this second set we were thinking along the lines of work attire. In this case we picked a full skirt that mimics the shape of the cape. Both the blouse and cardigan have shaping qualities to them which will help you to feel locked in when you pull the voluminous cape off. The cardigan has capelike aspects to it, with a drapey bottom. Cute tights and shoes add an always-visible feminine quality while the jewelry and bag are neutral pieces meant to speak softly. We think this outfit is sure to draw adoring eyes.

I love the sommerset cape! It is one of my favorite anthropologie purchases. Too bad its not warm enough for the cold NYC winter.

Thanks so much Roxy, this post was meant to be for me because I'm wearing a cape today and showcased on my blog. I love how you paired it with the Bowtied Mini because I got it but don't know if I should keep. You gave me some new ideas so thank you!

I love capes–I own one but the hardest thing for me is how to carry my bag. (Love your styling, btw.)

Ah, love the feedback!Kim G – ain't it great to feel special? :)Penelope – agreed, that was what stopped me from buying it. But now that I see it again I kind of wish I'd pulled the trigger.Ady – me too! Specifically so I can say that I'm wearing a cape. Because that just sounds cool.DEA – you look super cute today! (of course you do every day, but today especially for cape synergy). e. – I have not quite figured out the bag logistics either. When I wear my cape I tend to just carry a clutch. Anyone else have tips?

Thanks for styling the Somerset Cape! I was thrilled to grab one on sale last fall, but I don't wear it nearly often enough, just because I tend to think of capes as "opera-going attire" and I don't have very many glamorous events in my life these days… Now I'll try pairing it with jeans! (once the weather warms up a little)

I think the cape is great for winter as long as you layer. Last weekend when it topped out at 25 degrees I wore it over pants, a thermal shirt, and a wool sweater with a hat and I was fine. It could also be because I'm an incredibly fast walker though. Now my one goal is to find some perfect long gloves to match.
