Whether you work in an office with a dress code or you like your weekend wear to have a slightly upscale vibe, you should be shopping the Banana Republic Fall 2018 Friends and Family event! Yes that’s right, Banana Republic is getting good again!

And so is this deal, though it’s a little hard to follow so bear with me:

This event has me very pleased! I’ve been waiting years for a coat like the Italian Melton Wool-Blend Short Trench Coat ($248, all prices in this post are before discounts) above to show up in dark green at a palatable price point. I ended up investing in its longer cousin the Italian Melton Wool-Blend Military Coat ($299).

It’s a lot to follow I know! In no way am I advocating this but I do want to share that many of my savvy shopping friends will open a BR credit card during this promo, pay it off immediately and close it to get the exclusion-free access. That’s a lot of hoops to jump through and can negatively impact your credit score, and the BR credit card is not one of my favorites. So I share this not to encourage you do to open a card but rather to let you know that yes it is an option if your Banana Republic wishlist is heavy on leather, cashmere and suede right now.

Also worth noting? There is usually at least one late Fall/early Winter promo with no exclusions. And as Banana Republic is still recovering from poor sales over the last few years, I would not be surprised to see them do it again.

I’ve picked up a bunch of great work pieces at Banana Republic recently. The Bell Sleeve Shift Dress ($128) is a compliment magnet, especially in the vivid red colorway. Next on my list is the Ponte Flutter Sleeve Dress ($114-$129, above). How cute is that pink colorway?

I’d been yearning for longer pencil skirts and Banana Republic has delivered — the Washable Italian Wool Blend Pencil Skirt with Side Slit ($98) is in heavy rotation in my work wardrobe! The Scalloped Bi-Stretch Pencil Skirt ($78) is calling to me now. On the weekends I turn to the Pleated Tulle Midi Skirt ($118).

Banana Republic also has very comfortable work shoes! I find their pumps are one of the only brands that I can wear both to and from work as well as around the office.

Banana Republic does transitional pieces well too. This outfit above would be great in a casual office, and works very well for the weekend too! I own and absolutely love the Washable Wool-Cashmere Coatigan Sweater ($169, above); it’s not 100% cashmere but it’s one of the nicest pieces I’ve seen at BR in awhile.

Likewise the Tassel Zip High-Heel Ankle Boots ($178, above) are in my closet. They have just enough give in front to work for walking (not too tight) and the block heel makes them very sturdy.

Unlike some other retailers I can think of, where there is no color cohesion or overlying thought process in the designs, Banana Republic has put extra emphasis on making its item work together. From tone-on-tone looks to matching and coordinating pieces, BR’s items have thoughtful shapes and color choices that work so well together!

Even though there are many colorways to choose from at BR you can choose 2-5 and put together several outfits easily. There are plenty of neutrals for us city girls that wear only black, grey and cream in the winter, and lots of colors for those of you brave enough to step outside the box!

Sidenote, I have to give a major shoutout to the Slim Straight Black Jean ($98, above). I’ve owned these jeans going on 5 years now and they’re one of the few items to survive the many designer changes BR has gone through. These jeans are incredible. I put personal shopping clients in them all the time because they look great on every single body type! I recommend sizing down in these — I took a 30 instead of a 31.

Speaking of Banana Republic’s jeans, I wouldn’t recommend seeking them out over retailers but that’s not to say they don’t have good denim. In general BR’s jeans are slimming and deliver pleasing silhouettes. The Skinny Black Jean with Velvet Side-Stripe ($98) for instance are rather magnificent, with a great body-skimming fit and a truly elegant take on the jean racer stripe trend.

The outfit above and the outfit below are great examples of how BR’s denim can be dressed up or down depending on your needs.

I also quite like BR’s Girlfriend Jeans shape seen above. The Girlfriend Cropped Patchwork Jean (now $64) are not as wide leg as they look online and I knew that going in. I took a chance and ordered them anyway and I LOVE them. Great kick crops that get the thumbs up from both men and women. (They look especially stellar from behind!)

Of course it helps to have great tops to go with these jeans, and yes Banana Republic has you covered there. My favorite top of the season has to be the Soft Satin Pleated Drapey Tank ($41-$60) which comes in over 10 colors now, including the Royal Blue seen above and the Bright Guava Pink I just invested in.

More tops, plus dresses and coats and everything else, below in my shoppable boutique. What will you be purchasing during the Banana Republic Fall 2018 Friends and Family event?

Eh. BR is boring me right now. Better for the wallet, I suppose. I've actually been ordering a lot from Mango – shipping is excellent & the clothes are gorgeous.

Actually came here to see if anyone had any info & thoughts on this anthro stealing from artists situation & was surprised not to find a post about it yet: https://www.instagram.com/p/BpnJiGohf5K/?utm_sour

Wow – Anthro is really getting roasted there. They have stolen from artists before – there is no excuse for this.

Lol. My bad. I thought it was strange! Off to go check out the drama. Thanks!

Here's the statement from Australian ceramist Tara Burke, the artist in question:

My take is: Anthropologie only made their instagram statement after Burke made the situation public, in a PR move to take control of the narrative. If the comments they're getting are anything to go by, it's not working.

I think it's up to the artist to file a lawsuit now or not. I know what I would do in her shoes. Let's see what she does.

Love that military coat, Roxy! It's a good amount of wool for the price, too.

How has the quality of their sweaters been lately? I'm thinking about the Arie ribbed cardigan – I have been looking for the perfect long navy cardi for years now with no luck.

I love all the sweaters with at least some merino or cashmere in them. The Aire sweaters are pretty good (I have the turtleneck), but not especially soft.

Just curious why you don’t like the Banana card. I love mine. In addition to using it at BR, I use it a lot at Athleta. I end up with lots of rewards to use on future purchases.

    • November 2, 2018 / 6:39 am

Mostly for the fact that if you don't pay it off every month there's a ridiculously high interest charge, and their terms make it such that they can double that already crazy interest charge without warning. The rewards are nice but I get better rewards from my Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire. With rewards on a store card, you can only use them at that store! But with a real credit card you can use your rewards just about anywhere.

I got a promo email from BR with a unique coupon code for the 50% off/30% off cardholder deal. And I don't/have never had a CC from any of the Gap stores. I've used my code already for 50% off, in fact, so I can confirm that it's real!

    • November 4, 2018 / 7:12 pm

Very cool! I like that they’re extending the better promo to more people. Any highlights from your order?

I'm trying to be more restrained with my shopping at the moment, so I just ordered two sizes of the intarsia star sweater: https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?…

No idea if it will be any good in person, but the style is quirky while still being wearable day-to-day (take note, Anthro).

Really cute KL_Eyes! I hadn't even noticed that on the site before. I hope you love it in real life too!
