Shop the Madewell Fall 2018 Collection First :: Effortlessly with Roxy

Our friends over at Madewell love this community and wanted to send over a perk just for us: a shoppable sneak preview of the Madewell Fall 2018 collection! I recently had a chance to check out the collection in person and it is gorgeous! You can expect lots of beautiful merino wool in varying weights; denim rethought and reconstructed into highly wearable pieces. Also, for whatever reason, Madewell also has a confusing amount of extra flared flares and a slight addiction to ugly 70s-era stripes.

Although I am a huge fan of Madewell’s clothing I’ve never been a big fan of their online styling. So I invite you to look through the confusing outfit pairings in some of these photos and instead focus piece by piece on these items, many of which hold great promise for seasons to come!!

Above is my favorite look in the preview. This denim-on-denim idea starts with the beautiful Raw Hemmed Denim Seamed Dress ($138), surely my favorite piece in the Madewell Fall 2018 collection. It fits like a dream and runs TTS (I took a 10)! As suggested by the styling here it’s meant to have layering both below and above it — instead of denim I might do a white top. I’ve got a few ideas in the shop the look widget below.

The crazy layering effect comes into play in the look above, which is made up entirely of pieces I love but would never wear together. Kicking off this outfit is the Plaid Babydoll Cami Dress ($98). It looks rather brown in this photo but in real life I recall noting the coral pops of color in it. I wasn’t quite as much of a fan of the sweatercoat, which is too short and voluminous for my busty frame. I think it will look great in a different context over sleeker pieces. On me however it’s a no-go with a dress.

Much to my surprise, I did love the kicker jeans here even though they have front coin pockets. The small flare is ideal for my curvy shape! And the Square Satchel Bag ($148) is sure to be a popular shape for Fall. It’s just one of the trends interpreted very well in the Madewell Fall 2018 collection.

Nothing says Fall quite like layering! And though some made fun of me for it in my post from Spring, expect to see a ton of layering denim jackets under other jackets for Fall 2018. What can I say? I call the trends like I see them and this is one trend that’s going to be around for a few seasons.

I love this look above, especially the way the horizontal stripes in the skirt and vertical stripes in the top speak to each other. That said I’m not quite sure it works in real life on my body. It’s fun to look at though!

For me, I’d probably wear the skirt with a solid-colored turtleneck or some other elongating top.

And finally, because it isn’t nearly Fall yet, Madewell’s Fall 2018 collection preview also features a very now-appropriate outfit seen above. It starts with another denim dress winner, the Denim Daylily Dress ($108). I found this dress to be ultra-flattering on! (I took a 10, I nearly always do in Madewell primarily for length.) Add the Small Transport Crossbody ($128) and you’ve got a winning look. (The scarf’s product page isn’t working yet.)

SHOP THE LOOK:

I’ve had lots of winning items at Madewell this Summer! Among my favorites are this striped sweater, this pink dress, this striped tunic (I belt it and wear it over shorts), this necklace, these earrings, these sunglasses and this bag which I have in multiple colors.

I love that denim dress! But whyyyyyy did Madewell totally ruin their wishlist functionality (and delete everyone's wishlists) with the new website update? It's killing me that I can no longer "favorite" a specific size to track if it's in stock!

Unfortunately Madewell's parent company, J.Crew, is mired in debt right now. I think to save money they recently combined the website operations of both companies and simplified the functionality which had the unintended side effect of destroying wishlists. I know it must be very frustrating!

I agree it is so frustrating to look at my "favorites" list or even browse the website now. This new design for Madewell is terrible and it is not friendly at all. I have stopped looking because of it. (I can navigate J crew's site fine, and they still have wishlists with pictures, so they better fix this or it will certainly end my online browsing.)

That said, I do like the plaid babydoll dress and the camel sweater skirt.

i agree that it was not a helpful change to the site and while I love madewell, I have stopped looking for a bit (although did look at their pre-sale e-mail). i was hoping maybe it was just my home computer but I guess permanent. I like to look at wish lists in the am while I have coffee (not through full sites) so this will really curtail my madewell morning looks.

Love the post..thanks! I shop at Madewell so much more now.
Roxy: Are the sleeves of the denim dress exceptionally puffy? I'm not a huge fan of the puff. 🙂

    • July 24, 2018 / 12:29 pm

I don't remember feeling like they were poufy klj1. They are a bit longer on the arm, not very outward-protruding.

Hi, I found the sleeves on the denim dress to be puffy on me unfortunately. I tried sizing down but had the same issue.

Thank you for the link for the new collection Roxy! I love that denim dress, it's adorable. I love it when the Fall clothes start rolling in, always makes me happy!

Me too Jess! Fall is by far my favorite clothing season — I love layering.

Thanks for the peek and the critique. Your insights are always helpful, Roxy. The sweater skirt is my favorite. I like it with the striped top, too. The whole outfit in my fav.
As as insider, I got a link to a preview, too. Not a fan of the DadJean. I really hope they come out with some new washes in the Slim Straight jean. These jeans are perfect for me.

    • July 25, 2018 / 7:42 am

I'm no fan of the DadJean either maryeb. Stuff like that is flattering on next to no one. Who wears that stuff??

Here they are for anyone curious: http://bit.ly/2NJ4yIf

They're also in the first photo of the preview page I have linked in the post.

Has anyone seen the new sept catalog? While I like the photography the clothes are a huge yawnfest.

I agree with that, very disappointed. I did like the focus on the 5 different folks including Lauren Hutton but the clothes, blah.

Missing you Miss Roxy! Hope all is okay.

I haven't gotten the Sept catalog yet and I am dying for the new home catalog. I'm moving next month and debating whether to buy a rug while it's 20% off or wait and see if it goes on sale. Was there a big home markdown after the new home stuff came out in Fall? I can't remember.

  15. September 10, 2018 / 10:10 am

    Hi everyone,

I am so sorry for my long blog absence! To make a long story short, I unexpectedly had to head up to Connecticut for a few weeks to lead the process of cleaning out my parents' home now that my Mom is in her condo. The house had reached hoarding conditions and even with the help of a fantastic crew it still took weeks to remove everything that had to go and save the few things we wanted to keep. There is no longer internet service at the house, and because of the rural area where the house is located cell service is also minimal. I didn't get into town much so it was necessary to take a break from work, life and the blog to do what needed to be done.

The good news is much progress has been made and I'm back in NY for a bit before the next phase. I apologize for disappearing suddenly, and I can't promise there won't be more breaks in the coming months, but I am sure you can all understand that family comes first. This house represents my Mom's retirement fund and it's important we get it into saleable condition. I truly appreciate the community here being patient and checking in with me! Your kind emails were lovely welcome home greetings.

Anyway, I'm writing a post right now about the survey Anthro sent out last week, and I'm also working on a post responding to a comment on a recent post about where else Anthro fans can shop to find items like they used to create. Posting frequency is going to be low for awhile, but I am excited to discuss the survey and Fall shopping with everyone!
