March is such a strange month in New York City. Technically it’s supposed to go out like a lamb but in my lifetime that’s rarely been the case. April begins chilly weather and often snow. So, how does one go about dressing for Spring when it doesn’t feel like Spring? I answered that question earlier today in a styling ideas post and now here’s one example outfit.
On the day we shot this look you can see a bit of snow falling — especially in the first and second shots. There’s no hiding that I still need to wear a hat and scarf, so why avoid it in my outfits? On the warm days I’m as Spring as can be but on this day Winter was still the order of the day.
For me, making cold weather outfits feel more Springlike is all about incorporating color whenever possible. In my outfit pink, green, blue and red combine to add a sense of the colors I’d see in a bouquet. Soft textures like the velvet cami and the knit scarf help to keep things fresh. A red jacket breaks out of the black and grey routine I tend to fall into during Winter.
Next it’s all about layers, layers, layers. I might be freezing in the morning and ready to ditch my jacket by the time my lunch break rolls around. The plaid shirt in this look is layering perfection. Such a trusty piece, I often start off with it buttoned, then unbuttoned in the office to show off my cami. Then when it warms up? Tied around my waist it goes. This is one of my techniques for dressing for Spring when it doesn’t feel like Spring.
Then on my face it’s time for a change too. Instead of the smokey eye I’d been wearing all Winter, I’m wearing a very light eye shadow, a tightline of eyeliner and a saturated purplish-pink lipstick called Liv.
No doubt that as soon as the temperatures hit the 50s, I’m pulling out my Spring dresses and lighter jackets! I’m quite excited for Spring but I don’t mind making use of my Winter layers for a bit longer. How do you go about dressing for Spring when it doesn’t feel like Spring?
Warmer where you are? Here’s a very Springy OOTD and one that incorporates lighter layers. Did you know that you can see my OOTDs so many ways? Firstly, you can browse them all or get sneak peeks and extra angles on my Instagram. Secondly, you can see mirror selfie versions and candid shots on my blog Facebook page. Also, you can follow along and shop my right from your phone via screenshot + the liketoknowitapp. Plenty of ways to see all my OOTDs!!

Thank you Belle! This bag was something I bought several years ago with a work bonus, and that makes me smile every time I use it.
"Winterizing" my spring/summer dresses is kind of my uniform! I have SO MANY dresses that I just couldn't bear to let them sit until the warmer months. If I did this, only a small percentage would ever get worn. So I am a huge fan of cardigans (I have a massive collection) & jean jackets, colored tights, and sometimes depending on the cleavage factor, layering tops/blouses. I have a conservative job so I must not run around and show a lot of skin (gasp!). I also am a huge fan of color all year round. I live in the midwest so it seems like it's cold here more than it is warm so I have gotten quite used to this almost daily ensemble. Thanks for sharing your cute outfit and your advice!! I used to have a blog to share mine as well, but life got in the way. If you'd like to see some of my outfit ideas for dressing for spring when it doesn't feel like it, I'd love for you to take a peek at my IG! @ForensicFashionNotes Thanks!!
