April 2018 Free People new arrivals :: Effortlessly with Roxy

Some retailers may still be adrift. Yet Free People has been nailing their collections for quite some time now! The April 2018 Free People new arrivals are no exception. This set of latest picks offers plenty of pretty, aspirational and dare I say wearable clothing and accessories!

Because there are so many lovely items, it’s hard to pick a favorite or know where to begin. So I’ll return to the place I often begin — with dresses. Though strapless, the Life Like This Dress ($98, above), offers so many styling options. Hence, throw a favorite denim jacket over it, add wedges and a bucket bag and you’ve got a look that could be anything from work to weekend.

I have some holdover favorites from March too, like the Wrap it Up Dress ($68), the Embroidered Fable Dress ($168), the Bella Note Eyelet Dress ($128) and the French Quarter Dress ($128). Who knew that Free People would be the store where my dress wishlist is overflowing?

I’ve got more of my favorite dresses from the April 2018 Free People new arrivals sprinkled throughout this post. Meanwhile, here are some of my top frock picks.

April 2018 Free People new arrivals :: Effortlessly with Roxy
Shop: a lightweight dress that can be dressed up or down

Free People has the romantic element down in their boho clothing. You’ll find lots of touches like lace, scalloped hems, ruffles. You’ll even discover more literal items like hearts. Mix in top notch styling and perhaps you too will find yourself thinking, “I could totally rock the Anzio Set ($143)!

Several of FP’s sets (which include a top and skirt mostly, but sometimes a top and pants) are extremely cute. They’re surely some of my April 2018 Free People new arrivals favorites! Below, the Pretty Dayz Set ($128) comes in four appealing polka dot colors.

April 2018 Free People new arrivals :: Effortlessly with Roxy
Shop: Red, perhaps the most vibrant of the four colors this top-skirt set comes in

Elsewhere in tops, I’m delighted by both new colors of the familiar like the Deep V Bandeau Cami ($58) and brand new creations such as the Perfect Day Maxi Top ($128). I’m excited about interesting necklines like on the One to Market Cami ($98). Also, I’m enamored with more body-skimming and tailored options like the gorgeous Love Street Top ($88).

It’s no wonder I’ve got over $3,000 in my Free People cart right now when there are so many beautiful shirts, blouses and tops! Below, some of my favorites from the latest.

Shop: A cute little wrap dress to throw on whenever

Many of Free People’s dresses are too mini for me. Yet perhaps in a nod to the fact that their customer ranges across age groups, I’ve noticed slightly (slightly) longer dresses in their mini section. I think I could make the All My Love Wrap Slip ($68) above work. I certainly hope so anyway as both the blue and burgundy are calling to me! I’m noticing many cases where length seems to be improved in the April 2018 Free People new arrivals.

Don’t leave Free People’s site without checking out their new intimates! In the the April 2018 Free People new arrivals, these run the gamut from new colors of familiar bras to entirely new tops, dresses and slips. In addition, I’m loving their cropped tops, like the Crossfire Cami ($38), which is the perfect layering piece for me to make gorgeous low-cut tops work. (Check out my Instagram later today for the look!)

Below in my shoppable boutique you’ll find accessories, clothing and shoes from the April 2018 Free People new arrivals! After you’ve had your fill of these I suggest you take a look back at the March FP new arrivals too. More delights await there! Also, you may want to visit my picks for Madewell’s latest promo, expiring today.

Okay, how do I even choose a favorite?! Free People never disappoints and I'm obsessing over everything you shared. I am LOVING all of the dresses, can I have one of everything, please? Thanks for sharing girl.

It's so hard, there is so much to love!

I agree that FP's styles have remained fresh and creative. I don't like, though, that most of their tops aren't bra-friendly. I have a few that I can wear (perhaps with a camisole underneath), and I love those tops, but there are many items I've passed over because I just don't know how I can wear them braless. Additionally, many of the tops are cropped, and I just can't go there.

Agreed! I adore Free People but so many of their pieces are waaaay too low cut, I often have to stitch things up a bit or add hooks so there's less cleavage or have to pass entirely due to the bra situation. Such gorgeous tops though but I wish they'd make things a bit more bra friendly:)

Me three! Just want to add to the chorus. I find it a bit hurtful tbh that some brands totally ignore that there are curvy women in this world (Free People, Madewell, I'm looking at you). I actually wear a smaller size, but due to large chest and hips a lot of stuff does not work at all or does not look good. Sigh.

      April 9, 2018 / 2:11 pm

I agree – I have to pass over a lot of FP due to immodesty, but I own a lot of slips and half camis (these are a bra and a cami )https://shopcoobie.com/shop?c=coobie-bras and sometimes I can make things work. I just layer until I feel covered up enough to leave the house. I wish they'd bring back the easy breezy slips. I would buy those in many more colors!!!!

    • April 9, 2018 / 3:38 pm

OK let's discuss this a bit! Firstly, I want to say that I agree with you Guest, Jess, Anthropolitan and Simone. Free People could be so much more body positive than they are. It's…strange. Much as it's strange the way Anthropologie has spent the last 2-3 years backing into the same problems with fit — not accommodating larger busts or hips very much if at all. So please do not take what follows as an argument. I simply want to share how I make it work.

Free People makes many bramis/crop tops that a regular bra can be worn with. So what I do is wear one of these under the low cut tops. On deeper v-necks I often match the vee shape, and on other tops I do a more square or straight-cut brami.

      Some of those options include:
      || This crop top which comes in so many colors http://bit.ly/2Eydbk1
      || A ribbed brami that's a current fave of mine http://bit.ly/2JsRiGB
      || The Crossfire cami I mentioned in the post http://rstyle.me/iz-n/c23gj7i7ze_
      || This gorgeous bra that's meant to be seen http://bit.ly/2IHdcV5 (I layer a supportive bra underneath)
      || This square cut crop with beautiful thick straps http://bit.ly/2IEy3bD
      || A shorter version of the brami above http://bit.ly/2JyvbhW
      || This high-neck brami needs a t-back bra http://bit.ly/2JwwBcJ
      || A brami that runs small but stretches generously http://bit.ly/2Eyop7Z

And also, a few you can't wear a regular bra with unless you don't mind some strap showing — this doesn't bother me. I love the shape of this top http://bit.ly/2Jx1Ioo for example.

Anyway, again I am in no way disagreeing with you. That's how I make it work. =) I am currently picking out pieces for a FP Spring OOTD shoot. I'll be shooting it in late April and am very excited to share the looks!!!

Loving Free People so much right now!!! Unlike Anthro (and actually, lots and lots of retailers), they have not forgotten who they are and what they do best. The Embroidered Fable dress is far and away my favorite every year. I've got it in black w/ white, black w/ red, light olive and a gorgeous green-blue with cinnamon. Eyeing the red and purply-pink (which are both sold out in my size right now, sniff…) I always feel so special in that dress.

Their suede is another strong point – check out this pretty jacket: https://www.freepeople.com/shop/shrunken-embellis… and also this bag. I own it in the reddish-brown but I also think the olive is pretty: https://www.freepeople.com/shop/canyonland-tote/?…

I don't mind it when FP OD's on the boho, because no one (except maybe Johnny Was) does it as well as them. They are a regular source for kimonos and toppers for me. I'm not a fan of summer and hate my arms bare, so I always have to layer. I hope this kimono makes it to sale because I want it in both colors. https://www.freepeople.com/shop/dottie-west-kimon… I tried on this one and it's stunning. BUT – it is super delicate and had a tear. I'd get this one on sale and order 2 just to make sure one of them is not damaged. https://www.freepeople.com/shop/tropez-lace-kimon… This one's affordable, and I like the bright pop of yellow. https://www.freepeople.com/shop/eternal-flame-max

I swore off bodysuits after the 90's, but this embroidered flutter sleeve one is making me reconsider: https://www.freepeople.com/shop/sunny-meadow-body

I wish this hair jewelry was cheaper ; it would look so pretty in my daughter's waist-length hair! https://www.freepeople.com/shop/sunny-meadow-body

I kind of like this set – I'm thinking the top won't be as cropped on me as I'm short and short waisted, and also I don't walk around all day with my arms up airing my armpits like that model is doing: https://www.freepeople.com/shop/hearts-rising-emb

I bought this in black – I'd love the ivory too. I do wear a half-cami under it. Also, it's very short-waisted, which is prefect for me, but tall and long-waisted ladies won't do well with this: https://www.freepeople.com/shop/colette-printed-b

I have lots of sunnies and sandals on my list too, but I'll skip over those because I've posted a ton already. I'll just leave you with this jacket – it's making me LOL. If you just happen to have an extra $200 lying around, you can go tell everyone to go sit on a cactus – and hurry, it's almost sold out!!!: https://www.freepeople.com/shop/go-sit-on-a-cactu

    • April 9, 2018 / 3:40 pm

Love your picks Anthropolitan!! The Hearts Rising Embroidered Set is another one of my faves, I'm glad you mentioned it! I had missed the Colette Printed Buttondown Top and now it's on my wishlist too.

"walk around all day with my arms up airing my armpits" made my day!

Going by the reviews, a lot of the sets are much less revealing than in the the model shots. Too bad that the ones I want to try are online only, but I think they may be worth an order if my size pops back.

So much is like old Anthro with a wearble vintage vibe. Even some cotton with the black dress, for example, but the rest is mostly viscose and synthetic which I pass on.

I love that they have more matched sets, which Anthro tried in a few bits years ago, but then abandoned. Just imagine if Anthro had used that approach for all the jumpsuits they've been making for years!

Thank you for sharing these, Roxy.

    • April 9, 2018 / 3:42 pm

You're so welcome Eina. I think that's why I like these too, I agree that there's an old Anthropologie vibe I get from a lot of these clothes. Just today in-store I noticed a cute shirred side dress that could have been 2009 Anthro! At least someone in that family is keeping it going.

Is it just me, or have others found that Free people bralettes are always too large in the band for the bust size? I've tried on so many over the years, in various sizes, and none fit (usually a 30D/32C in underwires). Maybe I need to learn to sew my own.

    • April 9, 2018 / 5:16 pm

Yes the band size and the shoulders often for me. The Galloon style is the only one I've found that isn't too wide in one area or another.

      • Eina
        April 9, 2018 / 7:36 pm

Yes, and it is a problem for the models too: on most of them the band rides up the back….always a sign that the band is too big.

I also often see that on bikini tops. It looks bad and feels uncomfortable.

uh, oh, the grey white striped Piper shorts and jacket set in pure linen. I think I need to try this on. (pls fix the link, Roxy)

Ot but FP related: I have an order that I placed in-store last Wednesday ( 5 days ago!!!) that stil hasn’t shipped. I’m annoyed. Website states orders ship between 24-48 hours. I called and they said it’s “ processing”

    Anyone else?

    • April 9, 2018 / 9:06 pm

That's very strange Stefanie. The only thing I can think of is that they may need a store to fulfill it, and haven't found one with the item in stock yet? I might give it a couple more days (sorry, I know that's likely even more frustrating to hear!) and then call customer service.

        April 11, 2018 / 12:17 pm

It finally shipped yesterday via lasersuck so hopefully it arrives today.

So in love with that white lace dress!! xo

    • April 9, 2018 / 9:06 pm

Yes! That's turning out to be the favorite of this post.

  13. April 9, 2018 / 9:05 pm

OMG! Seriously so many good picks here! I'm obsessed with the Wrap It Up Dress – that has to be my favorite!! I also love the title of your post – so cute!

Thanks Morgan! The Wrap it Up Dress is seriously cute.

Obsessed with the FP One Ma Jolie mini dress in every color. Will look great on its own if it’s long enough or thrown over jeans as a tunic. Love it!

    • April 11, 2018 / 12:04 pm

So true Stefanie! I love pieces that can be worn so many ways like that.

  15. April 10, 2018 / 1:27 am

Love their casual looks for spring- that white swiss dot top is so cute!

    • April 11, 2018 / 12:05 pm

I tried this on the other in-store and it's very cute on. Perfect for wearing with a very high-waisted pant or skirt. I wish they made a sleeveless version.

  17. Barbara
    April 10, 2018 / 11:37 pm

Sorry, just can't get on board. It is all way too skimpy and geared toward 20 somethings. All the raving about Free People, I swear to god, has inspired the Urban group to make Anthropologie more like Free People. I wish I could understand what you all see in this stuff! Do mature women want bare midriffs and boobs hanging out?!

    • April 11, 2018 / 12:06 pm

What do you mean by mature women Barbara? I see women in the 50s and 60s rocking Free People. If Anthropologie is taking styling direction from Free People (and I agree they might be) that's just wrong — we don't need two FPs, we need one FP and one Anthro. What I look for at Free People is completely different than what I want at Anthropologie. There's no reason for one to copy the other; they should both be able to stand on their own.

      • Syefanie
        April 11, 2018 / 12:15 pm

If I may comment in regards to barbara’s comment, I can see where she’s coming from. I’m almost 46. Catalogs, photos etc are def. geared towards 20 something tall super skinny girls with barely any boobs who never wear bras and don’t care how short their dresses are. Even in store the SA’s are all about 100 lbs with long flowy hair. ( KOP PA location) Sometimes I think the catalogs and online photos are borderline soft porn and I’m not a prude. )Put it this way-I don’t leave FP catalogs laying around for my 15 year old twin boys to peruse ?.)
I think you just need to know what works on you their jeans only go up to a 31 and I’m a 32 so I know they won’t work for me. Sometimes flowy tunic oversized things work on me, sometimes they don’t. and a bralette or cami goes a long way with added coverage!

        • April 11, 2018 / 9:44 pm

Interesting! I guess I am spoiled because the NYC stores employ women of various sizes and ages, so I pretty much always feel comfy at FP. I am listening to what to what you say though and absorbing it.
