Just kidding, NYC, says Mother Nature! You’re gonna get more chilly dates yet. Fine, says I. Cape season is extended! A cape completes the perfect work outfit.

I’d be remiss not to start with my cape. I’ve owned it for 5+ years now and it is a very special piece to me. I wore it to my first date with my now-fiancé Alexander. I wore it on my interview to my current job and it is such a great finishing touch to any work outfit. Although cape season is long gone at retailers, Nordstrom releases a new version this cape every year! Look for it again in the Summer Anniversary Sale. Every time I put it on, I feel instantly glamorous and like I’ve made it.
When I first moved back to NYC after college, my BFF Molly and I would meet up for dinner and discuss how in our 30s we’d rule this town! We’d have top jobs at fashion magazines or prestigious newspapers. Correspondingly, we’d wear fabulous work outfits, take black cars to work every day and wear high heels with fancy coats. Perhaps, we’d wear capes. Every Winter I looked but it took me several years before I found the right pick for cape season. I can safely say the ideal choice is now in my closet.
Some of the details have changed (goodbye journalism, hello motherhood for Molly and technology for me!) yet the finer points have been hit. We do in fact rule this town as comfortable boss babes in our 30s, wear stylish work outfits and feel like this city is pretty much our oyster.
Working in fashion technology and being right on the upper edge of Millennial gives me unique insight into the way the trends are moving. I’ve noticed a ton of plaid on the horizon and decided to incorporate it into my outfits now. Consequently, over a feminine lace cami, this entire outfit reads as casual yet professional. Finally, a new bag to my closet adds the ideal finishing touch.
Spring may not be here in the temperature yet, but I feel it in every step. Like this outfit? Firstly, see all of my OOTDs here. Secondly, you can see preview shots of many of my OOTDs via my LiketoKnowIt page. Thirdly, I’ll be posting a candid mirror shot of this look on my Facebook page very soon, while I’ll be showing different ways to style these pieces in flat lays and different angles from this shoot via my Instagram and Pinterest pages. Thanks Rynetta! Soho always makes for a good backdrop. 🙂
I have always hated capes but this one is awesome. I really can imagine wearing this with jeans and boots, through to a great work dress. So good.

Love a good cape, but have yet to find the perfect one. Loving the fine jewellery though – I'm usually one for statement pieces but these look great

Me too Laura! I change over my closet quite often so to have some pieces in there that have been there for a long time makes them extra special.

Crossing my fingers and toes!
So gorgeous, Roxy! I love how you styled your denim skirt with a cape. A combo I never would have thought of!

Thank you Rachel! The skirt's length lends itself to pieces like capes.
Love your cape – it is indeed very glamorous! Gorgeous bag too!
One of the best items of clothing I ever had was a cape – vintage 1960s royal blue velvet with rhinestone buttons. Sadly, I do not own it anymore, and am very sad about that. It was truly a special piece.
