My Moment of Yes

How many times have you said yes today? So far this year? Isn’t it funny how yes becomes a word we really have to stop and think about saying? I laugh at myself when friends ask me to do something fun with them and out of habit my automatic answer is “No — wait, I meant yes!”

I’ve realized that I haven’t been saying yes to nearly enough good things in my life. Time to retrain that ol’ brain of mine! One of my first yeses this year? To rethinking a pantry staple, and discovering the magic of a childhood favorite foods updated for my grown up tastes.

Earlier this month, Alex and I said yes to a fantastic cooking class in a beautiful Brooklyn setting that invited us to rethink one of our favorite foods — soup! Yes, that’s right, soup in all of its delicious forms, from brothy and reinvigorating classics to bisques that comfort on the chilliest or hottest of days. On a recent Saturday we spent a particularly cold morning grateful to be inside at a delightful soup tasting at an event hosted by Well Yes! soups.

Cooking is something I absolutely love to do and this Well Yes! soups class had me excited to make soup again! Below, come inside the event with us…

It might have been the moment when Alex playfully crossed two of our ladles into an x as a mischievous no and I retorted back with a clear one-ladled yes. Or it might have been the moment when our extremely yummy grilled cheese (on rye with mozzarella and fresh basil, drool) dipped into the Well Yes! Tomato Carrot Bisque, and then hit my tastebuds with all the comfort of my childhood mixed with the rush of fresh and satisfyingly grown up flavors.

Sometime during this event in which we learned how to cook each flavor to perfection I realized that soup means more to me than just sustenance. Soup is joy, soup is comfort and soup is care. Yes, soup is wonderful self-care. And that’s when my Moment of Yes came to me. With so many new beginnings happening in my life in 2018, this year is surely meant to be the year of self-care! Well Yes! wants to hear your Moment of Yes too — more on that below, and be sure to check out more Well Yes! Moments of Yes here.

Canned soup may not be the first thing to come to your mind when you think of self-care. But Well Yes! has carefully crafted their flavors to challenge the status quo of what canned soup is. For this health-conscious girl, I’m delighted to see that their can liners are BPA-free. And while you’ll find classics like Chicken Noodle among the complete Well Yes! assortment, you’ll also find new and satisfying components like chicken meat with no antibiotics, sweet potatoes, kale, and quinoa.

Furthering their commitment to fulfillment, Well Yes! soups have no artificial flavors or colors and use non-GMO ingredients. It’s really no wonder that their tagline is “A Soup in the Right Direction®”.

Back home after the event, my rituals of self-care have begun. This year will see us buy my Mom a new home, begin to plan our wedding, and compete in at least 3 triathlons (my first in over 2 years!). That’s a lot of big changes and nothing supports me better in those in making sure I’m taking care of myself in positive ways. Whatever challenges we face on a daily or yearly basis, a few moments each day to slow down, be in the moment and say yes to myself sets me up for continued happiness and success. To me, self-care is the little things like getting enough sleep, finding ways to be grateful each day, and having joy in my daily activities including cooking and eating.

Inspired no doubt by our enlightening cooking class, Alex and I have been on a soup roll lately! I love how easy it is to find Well Yes! soups even in a place like Brooklyn, where grocery store shelf space can be at a premium.

Each can of Well Yes! soup contains 2 servings, which makes it ideal for sharing with someone! How about you? Well Yes! is making is especially tempting to give their soups a try with this coupon. It’s so hard to narrow my top flavor picks down to two; I highly recommend the Cajun Red Bean and Vegetable Soup, the Tomato Carrot Bisque, the Hearty Lentils with Vegetables Soup and the Chickpea and Roasted Red Pepper Soup. I’m so delighted that there are vegan options in Well Yes!’s assortment, so I can fearlessly entertain with soup for any of my friends!

You can see all of their varieties here — and keep up with what the Well Yes! brand is up to on their Facebook and Instagram too.

The only soups I tired in my life are tomato and sweet corn . These soups really look delicious and worth trying . Even the crockery looks fancy.

I am a huge fan of tomato soup personally, it's probably my favorite! The tomato & carrot bisque from the Well Yes brand is really interesting because it still tastes like the tomato soup I know and love with a slightly more vibrant flavor. I love the new interpretation!

The shop is soo beautiful to start with…I love the arrangement and the subtle color of its interior…and yeah, the foods look too yummy from the pictures! I'm so certain that was the case! That soup looks kinda thick thus I'd love it! Indeed, OUR MOMENT OF YEEES!

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:12 am

Yes! In Winter I love thick soups too…tomato, corn, butternut squash, bisques, all of the above.

I am only craving soups this winter as well, I am drooling over these pictures. It's funny how I am on the other side, I'm struggling to say no…

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:12 am

Winter is prime soup time, especially these super cold days we've been having!

Anytime it's cold, my go-to is soup! These all look so good!

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:13 am

Agreed. I love soup + sandwich or soup + salad combos this time of year.

I am exactly the same as you, I have found myself saying no to things out of fear of failure yet at the same time I have said yes to things because I don't want to let people down. It can be hard to strike a balance between the two but I have learned don't say no to things because of fear, only say no i.e a blog collaboration if it is not suited to your aesthetic. At the same time, say yes to things that challenge you. I like how you titled this your 'moment of yes'.

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:14 am

Thank you Ana! I agree, the fear of failure looms large in all of us, but as I get older I've learned that most mistakes seem larger to us than to anyone else, so it's ok to try and fail.

I'll be honest, I'm not much of a cook. But if there's one thing I would cook it would be soup. I think this Well Yes soup looks quite delish. Soup is pretty easy to make and good for you, too.

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:15 am

Haha, I get that! 10 years ago I would have said the same thing when I was right out of college with no cooking skills to speak of. Soup like this is definitely an easy food to prepare and over time I've become a full-fledged cook. But I also get that for some people cooking is a skill that never quite comes together!

What did you cook in the class? The soup looks very good, but since it is canned, I'm wondering what you cooked. I have taken some cooking classes at Sur la Table before and really enjoyed them.

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:18 am

We cooked 5 of the soup varieties and then the chef also had us prepare some accompaniments. So for example with the Butternut Squash Apple Bisque, we made a white bean hummus that you can dip veggies in. For the Roasted Chicken with Wild Rice soup we made polenta fries! Things like that. I also enjoyed the sweet potato chips we made as well as a mushroom rice dish. I'm hoping to share some recipes via my Pinterest soon!

Oh my gosh! My mouth is watering! I loveee soup and Campbells has been a favorite since I was really young. I love the focus behind this too. My Well, Yes moment is to say YES to myself and no to other things. Self care is so important!

    Liz

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:21 am

Agreed! Self care is the first thing to get flung out the window when I'm busy, but in the last couple of years especially I've learned that when I do that trouble follows. So I like having a dedicated reminder this year to slow down and take care of myself as needed.

I love that they’re BPA free- I’m soup obsessed and a cooking class sounds like so much fun!

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:22 am

Agreed! The BPA-free lining is a relief to me. I seek out foods without the BPA lining whenever I shop since learning how awful it is for us.

You're never going to believe this, but just a couple of hours ago I was standing in at the Co-op thinking "huh, what's this well, Yes soup business? I haven't heard of it before" My husband hasn't been feeling well, so into my cart went a couple of cans of Chicken Noodle to try. So cool that Campbell's has come out with a line that doesn't have preservatives. x

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:23 am

That's so awesome Ali, high fives to that! Part of the reason why this campaign was so alluring to me is same as you, many of my friends were already aware and curious of this soup line. And as a total winter soup craver I figured this would be right up the community's alley.

This seriously looks like so much fun! I have been really wanting to try the "Well, Yes!" line of soups. It can be a challenge to find canned soups that don't have things I'm allergic to in them, but if anyone will have something I can try, it would be Campbells!

    • February 6, 2018 / 11:24 am

Oh no! I used to have food allergies as a kid and I get how challenging it can be to find foods that are safe for you to eat. I hope you do find something among the Well Yes soups that would work for you, because I haven't tried a flavor yet that I didn't like!

These canned soup varieties look really yummy. I usually make soup from scratch but I can always use something to help me save some time. I will add this Well Yes canned soups to my grocery list this week.

This cooking class with Well Yes! soups sounds like it was a lot of fun. I love the soup pairings and they all look so delicious!!

You just made soup look like the next best thing. I love how the colors of the soup turned out and some pretty lovely photos. More on point, its lovely you were able to attend the class and learn how to make soup. Soups are the best to start the meals and good when you are sick and also a more healthy alternative. The recipes look good and something I would surely try this weekend. Cheers.

What a lovely foodie event and getting the opportunity to sample such delicious soups. I particularly like the fact that the soups are suitable for vegetarians, as I adore soup and prefer tohave that for lunch instead of a sandwich.
