Investigating Anthropologie’s new clothing arrivals

I’m exhausted with talking about what’s wrong with Anthropologie! So, instead, this post is dedicated to what I’m liking in their newest arrivals — and what came pretty close but just missed.

Before I get into that, I’m sure you’re wondering about Anthropologie’s Black Friday plans. This is NOT OFFICIAL but I am hearing the deal will be 30% off your purchase for a very short time — potentially just a few hours on Thanksgiving online only and then 20-25% off for Black Friday weekend. Again, this info is not directly from the home office and is simply the whispers I’m hearing — I’m not an official channel of Anthro’s so this is subject to being incorrect.

In anticipation of something coming on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, I’m setting up my shopping cart now with the items I’m liking. A few of Anthro’s outfits have caught my eye online, beginning with the combination you see above. I love the longer length of the Level 99 Button-Front Pencil Skirt ($105)! It looks very cute as shown with this billowy sweater, these velvet booties and this hat. For my body type that crewneck sweater isn’t the best — I’d much more likely pair it with this Free People option and the necklace the multi sea combo colorway is shown with.

That same hat makes an appearance further into the new arrivals, in this outfit featuring the reversible and warm-looking Sherpa Moto Vest ($168), this double-cuffed flared sweater (with the flared part tucked upwards, perhaps this should be a hint to you Anthro?) and these sleek-looking jeans which just so happen to be on sale! This is another nicely put-together outfit that speaks to current trends but has a classic feel to it. It’s not quite classic Anthro but I’ll take it. It’s modern, comfy-looking and cute!

Other warm layers I like include the Bettie Oversized Hooded Sweater ($128) and the Sparkle Hooded Pullover ($198). I have some more cute top layers in my shoppable boutique at the end of this post.

Pushing a bit deeper into trendiness, this outfit above featuring the Tuxedo Blazer ($148), this cami, and these shoes also gets the thumbs-up from me. A tuxedo blazer is a great piece to have around the holidays because you can throw it on over a dress, skirt/sweater, pants look or any look really for an instant way to stay warm and chic. The blazer runs a bit large — instead of a 10 (my usual jacket size at Anthropologie), I felt really good in an 8.

This outfit also features the Satin Joggers ($108). I normally stay away from joggers because they emphasize my wider hips and thicker legs, yet somehow these particular joggers are very sleek on! They do seem to run small though; I went all the way up to the XL for a good fit. This is one of a few pairs of cute joggers Anthro has in-stock at the moment. I really enjoy the Keegan Floral Joggers ($178), which look ideal for work, the Floral Jacquard Joggers ($398) which are by Byron Lars so very possibly fit all body types well, and the camo-printed Cropped Surplus Pants ($175).

From the trendy over to the classic Anthropologie, there are a few items that are making me smile big in the new arrivals. Top of that list has to go to the sparkly Astronomy Swing Dress ($228) you see above. I purchased this dress for a Thanksgiving weekend cocktail party I’m attending and I cannot wait to show it off! Anthro calls this dress swingy but it’s not — it’s a classic fit-and-flare. Right now I’m taking a 10 in dresses and that’s what I purchased here. I’m also delighted and surprised by the Lunar Dress ($168), especially in the grey-toned blue hue. It’s got sparkle at a more subtle level and layers easily. Throw a sweater over it and wear it out as a shiny skirt. It runs very small though, particularly through the ribcage. I have a smaller ribcage for my size, so the 12 worked, but most people may find themselves going two sizes up to get a good fit.

Also fitting into the sparkly category is the beautiful, long-sleeved Serena Column Dress ($638), which starts off looking rather mature until I saw and smiled at the blue sequin column running down each sleeve. I’d probably wear a leather moto over this dress to keep it feeling young, and wear my hair up in a messy bun with it.

With parties in mind this is one of many dresses that could sparkle through the holiday season. If you want something party-ready but not so sequiny, smaller chests should be very pleased with the Winter pastels of the Everleigh Lace Dress ($188). In the same fit alignment but back with the sparkle is the Sequined Floral Dress ($269), which features beautiful bursts of red. There’s also the Polka Dotted Slip Dress ($148), which looks slinky and pretty but perhaps too low-cut for large chests. I hope to find it in-store to try on so I can see for myself!

I’m also starting to see dresses with more versatility showing up in the new arrivals. This makes me feel happy and hopeful! This mini-list begins with the McKenna Dress ($325), above in cream and also available in blue and black. It’s shown with these earrings and this clutch that has a chain strap. Black Halo dresses are ideally shaped for athletic figures, but for curves I recommend sizing up. I’m commonly a 12 in this brand.

The wine-colored Macie Lace Dress ($108) is a beautiful tea-length dress that avoids looking frumpy thanks to spaghetti straps and a teardrop hemline. The dress is shown with a leather moto — the exact one doesn’t seem to be online but this one is very close. That’s exactly how I style my Celestial Lace Maxi Dress from last Fall, and my one complaint about that dress was that it was a bit too long to play with for everyday wear. Nice to see Anthro address those concerns! Another promising lace everyday dress is the navy knee-length Priscilla Eyelet Dress ($178), a fit-and-flare with beautiful sleeves and neckline.

I found a few delights hiding among Anthro’s new tops too. Take the Victorian Cutout Top ($98) above. Part of me does wish it had more structure below the chest, but it’s so lovely and will certainly look wonderful tucked into a knee-length skirt, a la the styling of the Embellished High-Neck Top ($78), itself a very cute top with a bead-adorned neckline. I also love love love the Tie-Neck Floral Blouse ($118) with its beautiful array of colors in a bold print on black and the lovely gold Tie-Neck Swing Blouse ($78), which manages to make even the weird, beaded Pilcro Mid-Rise Slim Straight Jeans ($158) look cute. The navy version of the tank would look great with the Sequined Soiree Skirt ($148).

I also think the Ruffled Eyelet Blouse ($228) is adorable, but here’s the thing about some of the pricier brands Anthropologie is carrying right now — I’m bombarded by so many promos for luxury retailers right now that I’m not paying full price at Saks or Neiman Marcus, or even Bergdorf’s or Barney’s. I don’t need to. So how can Anthro expect to compete with that?

Then there are the items that come very close to being wonderful for me, but don’t quite make it.

What a cute taaahhhh…..

….oh. The Ava Velvet Jumpsuit ($178)…pretty but I wish it was a top.

The Embroidered Peplum Tank ($198). Like most of Anthro’s peplum tops, it needs to be two inches longer and with just a bit of darting above the peplum. The Waffled V-Neck Peplum Top ($68) and sparkly Vedette Blouse ($198) get it right.

The Lianne Ruffled Top ($78, above in a very cute sky blue, the Cora Ruffle-Sleeve Pullover ($78) and the Gretchen Ruffle-Sleeve Blouse ($128). Three attempts to get small ruffles right and none hit the mark for me. I like Free People’s take the Seashore Mini ($60) better than any of these, and it costs less too.

Below, more of my new arrivals picks in Anthro’s clothing section — later today, we’ll talk new accessories that I’m in love with. What are you liking from the newest stuff, and what’s in your cart for Black Friday?

Love that sequin soiree skirt, but I already have 2 sequin skirts, and have my eye on the Garden Glitz skirt (even though the waistband is really itchy – it looks so cute on!). Also like that pearled top.

There is one item that is really making me drool, and that is this Cecilia Prado maxi dress: http://shopstyle.it/l/n6EJ

And a few others (feel free to change these links, Roxy) – Good to see Chie Mihara back; these platforms are TDF: http://shopstyle.it/l/n6Gj

this clutch is really pretty: http://shopstyle.it/l/n6EY

They just debuted a whole new collection from Sibilia – these two are my faves: http://shopstyle.it/l/n6E8 http://shopstyle.it/l/n6GN

I was in a store last week, and everything had sequins or sparkle on it. I know it’s the holiday season, but honestly the place looked like Forver 21. I might buy one shiny thing, but I’m not going to fill my closet with that stuff. They are really lacking in good sweaters this year – Garnet Hill and Club monaco are getting all my money there. Where are all the beautiful Rosie Niera/Angel of the North/Sleeping on Snow sweaters?

But oh, that Cecilia Prado dress. When they get things right, they get things right!

I don't see that clutch on the website 🙁

        • November 21, 2017 / 9:36 am

Hi Natalie, it was online yesterday! For whatever reason Anthropologie often debuts new items, and then removes them for a few days. I have no idea why…it's so dumb. The image is a link though (an affiliate link!) to keep trying if you wish. I find these items usually return after two days.

Yes, Roxy, thank you for sharing your picks! I agree with Anthropolitan that Anthro's sweater picks this season are seriously lacking. I did buy the Rosie Neira Wool Buttoned Military Jacket, though: https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/wool-buttoned-
It is 100% wool (boiled wool, actually); I didn't find it to be itchy, but I am also not sensitive to wool. Unfortunately, the jacket is not lined, but I did find it to fit TTS. I also bought and will return Sleeping on Snow's Faux Fur-Collared Cardigan: https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/faux-fur-colla…. I ordered the petite size because I'm short (I'm only 5'1"), but the sleeves on me hit at an awkward place–somewhere between 3/4 length and bracelet sleeve (and, I don't have long arms, either!). This may just be the particular sweater I was sent because I don't see the awkward sleeve length mentioned in any of the reviews. I ordered this cardigan because I'm a faux fur fiend (!), but I don't think it's worth the price. It is made mostly of synthetic materials, and it sheds quite a bit. I was wearing black leggings when I tried on the sweater, and my leggings were covered with white fur.

So, yes– the sweater selection has been disappointing to me which is why I'm grateful to Anthropolitan for pointing out the Cecilia Prado maxi. Wow, that dress is a beauty! I'll have to save up for it, but it is atop my wishlist right now!

Very pretty Christina! I have a Sleeping on Snow boiled wool jacket and it is one of my absolute faves.

Last year Anthropologie did a 30% off… I'd love if they went there again!

        Woohoo!

      • November 21, 2017 / 9:37 am

Yes that was a brain fart on my part, it should have said 30% off all along!

For the black halo McKenna dress, Amazon already has 30% off and free shipping both ways. Amazon always seems to beat everyone to the finish line…..

Thanks for the post, Roxy:-) I feel that my wallet might be safe from any Anthro purchases for Black Fridayso far. I did however, go to Madewell's early sale on Sunday and bought a couple of items. They have been getting my money lately.
I purchased a few basics at Anthro last week (Another waffle knit top, a pr of flats and a couple of basic tops. I also got a new mirror on the way for the space over my fireplace which I'm super excited to receive :-0 https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/wooded-manor-m
    Happy Thanksgiving! (early!)

I agree, normally anthropologie is my go to store, but as it gets cold out I love sweaters. Anthro's options are awful, but madewell has a number of cozy sweaters I love, as well as boots and bags. I'm still hoping for a good promo at Anthro for a few things, but lately they have fallen off my radar. I hope the new year brings back the old Anthro charm.

    • November 21, 2017 / 9:38 am

Happy Thanksgiving klj1! I hear you — I am at the top level of Madewell's Insider loyalty program, they have been getting so much of my spending money that used to be reserved for Anthropologie!

Your point about competing with luxe brand promos is so true, Roxy.
There are a few things in the mid price range that have caught my eye at Anthro, though.

    Highlander Belted Trousers
    Rose Sweater Maxi Dress
    Gail Wrap Blouse
Lots of shoes, boots, and jewellery

Also strangely drawn to the Hygge Cardigan, which seems to be exactly what I wish I was wearing whenever I see it…

    • November 21, 2017 / 9:39 am

Cute picks Soleil! I hear you on the Hygge Cardigan, there are few items like that where I'm not sure why I like them, but I do!

I miss the days when their Black Friday sale was 50% off sale. Especially since they frequently have 25-40% off sales on regular weekends, I would like to see something special for BF. 30% of full price isn’t enough to entice me to go

      November 21, 2017 / 7:03 am

I purchased a few tops during the 20% off and hope to get a PA. That and possibly a few gift items will be the extent of it. I purchased a few gifts at free people and have a few more to go there and done!

    • November 21, 2017 / 9:40 am

It might be this year. But honestly, those days are also connected to Anthropologie doing horribly, so I don't wish for that.

I feel as though Anthro miss the boat because there have been so many pre-BF sales and people are probably getting shopped out. I, for one, spent all my money at Free People. There might be a couple of smaller gift items that I will pick up at Anthro though but I think I did most of that at their anniversary sale.

    • November 21, 2017 / 9:41 am

It's possible. I for one don't like the creep very much. It makes me sad and feels like the retailers are getting so greedy for our money. I adore Christmas but I saw so many stores with their ornaments and trees up in October, and to me that is NOT what this season is about at all. It turns me off, big-time. In a way I'm glad for all the stores waiting to do their sales. I want to think about Christmas after Thanksgiving and not before.

        November 21, 2017 / 10:19 am

I agree – sales have been so aggressive over the past couple of weeks. The Santa in our mall shows up November 1st and the ornaments go up even earlier than that. I love fall, and want to enjoy one season at a time!

Hi, does anyone know if the Thanksgiving sale (30%) would apply to sale furniture? Or if you can get a PA for the Thanksgiving sale on a previous purchase? I want a bed that is on sale, but the current sale on sale doesn't apply to the bed, although it does apply to other furniture like coffee tables, weird… Thanks!

    • November 21, 2017 / 4:00 pm

It's a crapshoot — most years beds and other large furniture items are excluded, but not always. The general rules on PAs is that you cannot PA to a promo discount, but it never hurts to ask. 🙂
