Ay yi yi: What is Anthropologie’s new stuff???

This post contains affiliate links. Please read this blog’s disclosure post for more info.

Much like me, Anthropologie’s own product models can’t seem to help but wonder…what is this stuff? No, really, what is this stuff Anthropologie? Last week I was at training for work and was hoping to use a lunch break to sneak in a post about the new goodies, but after a few minutes perusing the new arrivals I realized I had to wait until I had time to gather my thoughts.

It’s important to remember that in September Anthro sent out a survey asking many customers for design feedback…it’s far too early to see the results of that feedback. (Expect it in the Spring 2018 collection, please Anthro Gods.)

But my god, what. Is. This. Stuff. I can’t help but repeat that phrase because I’m flabbergasted by outfits like the Paloma Turtleneck Sweater ($128, above) which has huge sleeves because…??? And is made from acrylic, wool, nylon, spandex because…???? And is shown with these ugly green slides that are too small on the model’s feet and are the same color as my parents’ 70s-era master bathroom because…?????!?

Believe me Ms. Model, we are just as pensive and confused as you.

There are so many items with potential that blow it in the execution somehow. Again we have Ms. Model #2 above who can’t help but scratch her head, speechless and mouth agape in wondering why on Earth the Brushed Fleece Cowl Top ($88) is so dang oversized. It’s a beautiful color (and comes two more equally pretty colors, love the cedar!) but it’s HUGE. As a body-skimming piece? Ideal. Is Anthropologie trying to copy Free People here, which does tend to go the oversized route with its layering tops? And if so, WHY Anthropologie, when you also own that brand and don’t need to go poaching yourself for ideas? I don’t want Free People at Anthropologie, I want Anthropologie at Anthropologie.

So it goes throughout the new sweater arrivals, which led to such repeated and increasingly deep sighs from me that my boyfriend asked if I was OK. I can only pout about items like the Fringed Isle Pullover ($138) which has completely unnecessary bell sleeves and bacteria growing on it, or the Telluride Pullover ($228), which is pretty and has lovely details but then blows it by not 100% wool nor a closed-stitch sweater but still manages to retail for over $200? Go home Anthropologie, you’re drunk.

Sooooooooooo many of Anthro’s new sweaters have proportion issues. They’re just too short! Let me spell it out: adults wear tops that are about 26″ to 29″ long. The average Anthropologie sweater? Looks to be 23″. Otherwise very cute items like the Twisted Chenille Pullover ($118)? Too short. The beautifully designed Textured Pointelle Sweater ($138)? Too short and too boxy. The Jona Ruffled Pullover ($118)? Has a seriously cute ruffle, very pretty design and not nearly enough length for most adults to wear it. The Cindy Pullover ($98, above)? Stunning blue color, lovely v-neck, awesome thicker knit…and way too short.

Can it really be a coincidence that so many of the new product photos feature models scratching their heads, or pensively posing?

Now I’d like to move on to the part of this post I like to call: No.

No. About 10 bows too many per leg.

No. (Sequin flares, really?)

No. Balloon lace sleeves…why? Is linebacker the look du jour?

No. Sorry Ms. Model, you’re not selling it.

OK. I like the colorblocking. But I would have LOVED this coat in wool.
You know, wool? That material that’s classic and good winter?
Wool…which comes from sheep? Not birds? Or faux birds? Or faux animals?

I’m also having a big problem with Anthropologie’s styling right now. For every cute look such as this outfit featuring the Timshel Fringed Cardigan ($300, above) there are about 20 looks like the one with the Sidone Maxi Skirt ($138), which features a stange color combination and proportions that don’t look sleek, elegant or wearable for a majority of the population. (That said, I do sincerely appreciate the shot of the skirt from the rear, because it’s helpful to see an item from all angles.)

They even managed to make BB Dakota’s Draped & Sueded Jacket ($108), which is very sleek and slinky and ideal in real life look ugly. That’s almost impressive.

For every cute dress like the Munro Embroidered Tunic Dress ($168, above and oh so pretty) there are 10 dresses that are a too-loose, too-big or too boxy option like the Embellished Floral Dress ($328). For every possibly promising top like the Embroidered Plaid Buttondown ($88 and looks great with this faux fur vest), there’s lost potential in tons of items like the pretty but too bulky Embroidered Peasant Buttondown ($158) — a top which is also, you guessed it, TOO SHORT.

Let’s conclude this post with some items from the new arrivals that I truly like or think have potential. There are far too few items in this category right now. When most of my new wishlist additions at Anthropologie are from Michael Stars…we have a problem.

The Astelle Fair Isle Pullover ($398) is beautiful! I love the pattern, the colors, and the longer length. There’s a great v-neck and I love the idea of wearing this with a mini skirt (and tights, and pumps) for a cute, modern outfit.

Here’s a great interpretation of a menswear pattern in the plaid of the Ella Embroidered Peplum Shirt ($118) softened for women’s. This top has a very vague western vibe and would look equally great with a soft long layering vest, a quilted coat or my favorite knit moto jacket.

A body-skimming dress with beautiful fit details and great length? More like the Ribbed Midi Dress ($168) please! Wear it with the Molli Longline Anorak ($168).

Most of Anthropologie’s party items haven’t interested me lately, but the Sequined Bell-Sleeve Top ($118) hits right in the bullseye of trendy, everyday and party wear. Well done with this one, Anthro!

The Contrast Hem Tank ($78) has a lot going for it in the front, with cutely adorned sleeves, and the different-colored back. What a fun top! I wish this one had come out in Spring instead of nearly Winter.

The Monica Jacket ($98) looks to have potential — I can’t really get past how ugly the styling is (and that soupy pea green backdrop isn’t helping much), but I think this item could be really cute and it has good reviews so far. It comes in three colors. I’m liking the Metallic V-Neck Tank ($320) layered underneath too, but ouch, that price tag.

How long is the Michael Stars Off-The-Shoulder Tunic Dress ($138) really? It’s hard to tell when each of the three colors appears to be a different length based on Anthro’s product shots. The reviews on this one are mixed…but if real life is as cute as the white version looks above, I like it.

Why didn’t the Lunar Dress ($168, above) come out in the Spring? Ditto the Scalloped Lace Dress ($178) and the Mira Velvet Wrap Dress ($268)?

On the more weather-appropriate side, the Hamilton Faux Fur-Lined Anorak ($178) is very pretty and would look lovely over the Long-Sleeve Henley Top ($68).

Below, some of my picks and recoils from the newest stuff — the accessories sections continue to be the biggest wins for me currently at Anthropologie. What are you liking and wondering about right now at Anthro?

I think I sprained something I'm nodding so hard in agreement, Roxy.

It's getting exhausting to sift through the No for a few measly bits of Yes…

I'd also add: is there a global button and zipper shortage? Because it feels like none of the jackets, coats, or sweaters have them. I need closure!

      October 30, 2017 / 11:31 am

I agree on the closure thing. I have two items I'm just going to take in to have a button or hook placed.

Oh my gosh, that jacket is just…bad. Really, really, laughably bad.

Thanks for pointing out that dress, it is nice!
I liked the earrings shown with it but when I look at their product page, they look like they go in the ear perpendicularly instead of straight on…which isn't the same look at all…what gives?

    just blah blah blah
i stopped by to return a dress the other day and couldnt even tempt myself with the 40% off sale item they had.
i just dont like anything. i dont think any of the items out on the floor have a flattering cut. only byron lars dresses but i have a few and cant justify a $600+ dress

    • October 30, 2017 / 12:16 pm

I hear that. I have tried on and love both the Nobility Dress and the Lillian Column Dress from Byron Lars, and purchased the latter during the last full-price promo. I ended up selling two dresses in my closet to make room for it but it's so lovely, I'm very happy with it! That said, I don't want Anthropologie to get in the habit of charging $600+ for dresses because even after the discount it was on the border of bad-taste-in-my-mouth pricey.

      Quick reviews on each:
The Nobility Dress has a beautiful lace sweetheart neckline, and I love the way the back of the skirt has pattern placement for ultimate flattery (yay tapered seam over the tush!). I sized up to a 12 in this dress, and the bust was still a bit small on me. I chose the Lillian Column Dress over this one mostly because I found it very hard for the vertical stripes in the skirt to lay right on me. I'm too curvy.

The Lillian Column Dress has a much more flattering skirt pattern for hourglass or pear figures. The buttons are not my favorite, but I love the overall effect of the dress. This one seems to have more structure than the Nobility Dress and holds me in a bit better. I also took a 12 in this dress.

Between this nonsense and whatever identity crisis J.Crew is grappling with, I’m sitting out what would normally be my favorite shopping season. More to spend at the Sephora sale coming up, I guess.

    • October 30, 2017 / 12:16 pm

I am loving J. Crew lately!!! Many more classic items and ruffles and bows in all the right places. But I have seen many express the same feedback as you MonicaBonica, so we shall see if they continue to make improvements or not.

I ran into Anthro the other day for the first time in months. Not much to chose from at all and these new arrivals are just AWFUL! Laughing at the post above as my 10 year old daughter does have an adorable Cat & Jack bomber w/little rockets all over the back! And, it's adorable for her as she is 10!!! Not for me!
I know everyone is stunned as we just completed that survey and it was all disregarded. Unless, it takes that long to roll those results in and possibly spring will better? Hard to say, but at least my wallets safe!

    • October 30, 2017 / 12:17 pm

Yes it's much too early right now to see results and changes from the most recent survey.

Of course, this was not the first survey they'd sent asking for feedback, so…umm…Anthro?

If there are any former Anthro. employees among your readers, curious for their input on this issue. Why are they so resistant to reviewing what people liked/what sold a few years ago and figuring out how recreate that in today's clothing? There has to be some talk among managers about poor reviews, lackluster sales, etc.

      • anon
        October 30, 2017 / 7:27 pm

        Hi Nancy,
As a former PS, I'm just as baffled as everyone else. I was a long time anthro shopper before working in the store for almost 2 years. With each roll out, I became more frustrated and bewildered by the lack of focus and direction for the line. I knew it was time to go when I was sending my sweet ladies to nordstrom for denim ( this is my soap box. I'll spare everyone the speech but I hate that Anthro has given up on premium denim) and to Evereve for fun tops. Garnet hill for quality sweaters. You get the picture. Even Target has upped their game for tees and basics.

They ask for customer feedback yet don't implement changes. I do think they know and wish I understood why they won't make changes. So many little things could be done to improve the customer experience yet nothing changes.. Sales are down and returns are up ( and please, I just can not understand why a mail order return takes over a month to process. Other retailers complete a mail return in days. Anthro takes weeks! Why???I try to forget that I've mailed something back so I can be surprised when it finally credits back to my account. This is a major service issue and often causes problems for the store level staff.)

I understand the product for each seasons roll out has been ordered months in advance and they are stuck with it, however, this sad trend of cheap materials, poor design and fit has been going on for years. They've had plenty of time to pull it together. I attended a district PS meeting before I left 6 months ago and shared our concerns. I always felt I was an advocate for the customer and really did my best to share what was happening at the store level. Sadly, it fell on deaf ears.

To answer your question Nancy, yes, the managers and Personal Stylists talk. A lot. We share our feedback with upper management and the buyers. I offered on numerous occasions to host the buyers in our store so they could see first hand what's going on. Never happened. I worked very hard in my store and loved it. Loved it. Loved my manager ( who was fired for poor sales. Ridiculous) and the girls I worked with. I was blessed to meet some of the most lovely, fashionable and beautiful ladies and enjoyed every minute with them. I'm sad that the clothes and vibe in the stores has taken such a sad turn. I HOPE that someone at Home office will read this fantastic blog ( Thank you Roxy!) and take this free and passionate feedback to someone that can make changes. I'm not ready to throw in the anthro tea towel just yet, but I'm close. I ordered an adorable door knocker a few weeks ago and it arrived without hard ware to install. It made me sad.)

        Sorry for the long response.

        • Nancy
          October 30, 2017 / 7:47 pm

I appreciate you taking the time to reply…it is sad…I used to walk in the store and want pretty much everything and now…maybe…once in awhile something catches my eye but as you said …for the poor quality of most current offerings and high prices, I wait for sales.

        • Eina
          October 30, 2017 / 8:33 pm

Thank you so much for responding. You sound like one of the awesome crew in the stores were I used to shop. Sadly, none of them work there anymore, not even the managers or personal shoppers, and I suspect for the same reasons. I've had similar conversations with staff over the last years, so I know information is passed on. New staff is still lovely, but they have almost nothing to work with anymore.

What I see happening is something I saw many years ago when I worked other chains that were started by passionate idiviiduals. The people at the top who had the original vision are all gone; in their place are industry insiders who keep on keeping on.

Not sure if they are even hiring designers and patternmakers who understand tailoring anymore, or if designers aren't allowed to make things they themselves would wear. Maybe it wouldn't matter because the materials are so poor.

So I still check the site, order shoes and scarves and some jewelry, and when I make my returns in-store I go straight to the rack with other online-only returns. And a few times a year I may even find something.

            October 31, 2017 / 6:58 am

I miss it. I really do. Especially this time of year, holiday is so magical in the stores and the visual team does an incredible job in transforming the store. I hope they get back to sweeping us off our feet very soon.

Off topic, but has anyone seen the Glencoe plaid sweater coat by Field Flower? It was on the website and now gone. If I do a google search the image appears, but anthro says fiddlesticks when I follow the link. It looked like the famous bird coat from a few years ago.

          • Eina
            October 31, 2017 / 1:28 pm

Yes, I tried the Glencoe last week in-store and it is like the bird and the horse coat, original version, not the low-quality pilling acrylic blend remake of the horse version..

The Glencoe is 100% wool, but I think the earlier ones were pure lambswool. It is soft and feels great. TTS, short people need to fold up the sleeves. I almost bought it, but the greys and blues didn't work so well for me, at least under the dressing room lights.

I would call the store as it is new. I find it so untrustworthy when Anthro has things disappear from the website. Maybe they're about to do a sweater promo.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this. I'm not at all surprised by what you said, but very sad. For a while now I've had the very strong feeling that Anthro just cares about its' investors and not their customers, and this confirms it. 🙁

Upping the Garnet Hill sweater recommendation. It's the only place I've bought sweaters this year. Same price as Anthro's poly/acrylic sweaters, especially if you catch one of their regular sales, but instead GH has wool/alpaca/cotton/cashmere. Would love to see a post on them!

I will save y'all some time, the Hamilton fur lined anorak is huge and unflattering IRL. Had high hopes for this one since I always purchase a jacket from Anthro for fall/winter

The dual circle earrings are cheap looking/feeling IRL and mine came bent in the mail.

  7. Tanda
    October 30, 2017 / 1:53 pm

I feel like all my favorite retailers became unshoppable in a recent year. Anthro went crazy with shapeless, acrylic and overpriced. JCrew slapping giant ruffles and bell sleeves on everything, cannot stop producing off the shoulder tops even in the winter also uses blends in place were only recently they used wool (their menswear is excellent though), BR uses poly too much and barely ever fits me right anymore so it's tiring to shop there. I've been looking at some new brands like Poetry Fashion, Sessun and Sezane but cannot find many reviews on those. I'll probably just have to interrogate their Customer Service and take a chance. I like how Boden fits and the quality is good but I just cannot bring myself to wear their prints and even solid colors do not appeal to me much.

    • Christy
      October 30, 2017 / 2:40 pm

I have purchased a couple items from Sezane and the quality and service is fantastic! I was worried as their prices are slightly high and I had to return/rebuy in another size and was delighted w/the service!

        October 30, 2017 / 3:02 pm

Thank you Christy! In my opinion Sezane is the dreamiest of all. They seem to have issues with the inventory as a lot of stuff is constantly sold out. Either the market is hungry for feminine or they just do not plan well. What did you get from them if you don't mind me asking? Did you try to wash any of it already/

I used to buy trousers at JCrew for my partner, but he's been complaining about the fit so I stopped. The last thing I bought there was a tweed blazer from about 2012, but the quality was already going down at that point. I end up wearing my vintage RL tweed much more, and it looks newer.

    • October 30, 2017 / 9:21 pm

I agree Accessories are the only saving grace this season. I adore the Troubador Felted Bouquet scarves and Felted Floral tuques. I almost want to order multiple colours! (Any reviews on those, ladies?). Lots of chunky pompoms and scarves.
As echoed by 90% of others, the Clothing sucks. And I *love* Fall clothing, so this is overwhelmingly disappointing. But great for my finances.

    • October 30, 2017 / 9:24 pm

See, and I just can't stand Michael Stars. I feel like Anthro should rename itself the Michael Stars Store. I just associate this brand with the '80s I guess.

      • Shari
        October 31, 2017 / 6:48 am

Their sweaters etc are quality and anthro carries in sized (where someone just has the one size items). I have an athletic build with a really short waist. It is actually tough to find dresses that fit (both a wider waist to hip ratio and a short torso) and Michael stars dresses are a winner all around, and reasonable. For me they are a go to. I can see for others how they would remind them of the 80s (I am older so maybe there is some nostalgia).

Even if I don't need a sleeveless, back-zip jumpsuit, I am planning on ordering this silk one, just to see the fabric and colors in person:
    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/romey-silk-jum

Also, I love the Jess Panza earrings: I got the green Infinity Hoop earrings which sold out already and they are lightweight and such a lovely shade.

    Otherwise, all of the above.

    • October 30, 2017 / 9:26 pm

Well, I've turned a jumpsuit into a dress before, top and bottom might work to if I give it to a tailor, but only if it has enough length in the torso. Wish Anthro would do more matched sets for versatility.

I love the Munro dress and the faux leather pants which IMO look better IRL if you wear them tighter. I have so many holiday tops they will look good with.

"Now I’d like to move on to the part of this post I like to call: No." hahahahaha. You could have written a whole post on nothing but that alone. Seriously.So.,Awful. Anthro.

I do like the Munro dress, and tried it on today. I'm a 6 and the small was a good fit – only slightly wide, and best of all, the lining was actually the same size as the dress! the colors and beading are really pretty. BUT…this is NOT a $170 dress, not by any stretch of the imagination. It's viscose and flimsy and looks not likely to last long. Worth $128 tops, Anthro!

I've got almost nothing on my wishlist. Yet, no one other store has been doing it for me either. I'm getting one thing here, one thing there. Getting a LOT of stuff at my local upscale consignment store I've always loved shopping consignment – it seems to be the one place where I can still find unique, quality clothes.

Thanks, Nam. I guess the storm wasn't too bad because I slept through the whole thing, LOL. There are leaves and tree branches everywhere, but that's about it.

Sheesh, this is SO depressing! I also really like the contrast hem tank. But why didn’t they release it in this Spring when I was looking for cute tanks & short sleeves? To wear it now, I have to cover it up. So ridiculous! And I agree that the Astelle Fair Isle sweater is gorgeous (& made of cotton & wool – hallelujah!) but wtf – $400? Like the rest of you, I’m scratching my head. This trend has been going on for quite some time. At what point to you clean house and find new people to buy/design/whatever and turn things around? I worked part-time a few years ago and I never, ever brought any money home. I spent every dime (& then some) on the fun and wearable clothes. I loved having a customer come in and say, “I have a date tonight and I’m so excited! Can you help me find something to wear?” And we would go through the store and grab stuff and head to the dressing room and she would find *just* what she was looking for & walk out feeling like a million bucks. It was really so, so fun. And now, I would be like, “you’re gonna have to go look somewhere else unless you date is expecting a canary.”

THANK YOU! When I filled out the survey that was one of my main points: I either have to be able to wear it to work (where we all spend most of our waking hours) or out on a date, and most folks probably don't want their date in a patterned mumu. I have enough casual clothes for around the house and running an errand. Anthropologie used to be special and now it's all junk. Irrelevant junk too! I don't want a sleeveless dress or top in winter and I live in LA!!!! Get with the program!!!

The new arrivals are laugh out loud bad. There are a couple things here and there that are nice, but there is no over all esthetic anymore. Just a strange hodge podge of unflattering and unwearable stuff. And thank you Sara (from above) echoing my statement I always say which is, about time to roll some heads at Anthro! They are stuck in a black hole.

Madewell and Bloomies are benefiting from the anthro failings. For some reason Bloomies has sent me a few 25% off coupons which I have used for Joie and page velvet and Black Halo dresses. a black halo dress (especially with 25% off) is actually less than some of the poor quality anthro stuff. It is sad. I have a wish list but rarely check it where I used to multiple times per day

Does anyone know what happened to their Angel of the North line? It makes me so sad because I always get a few sweaters from them in the winter . Also, where else can you get that alpine feel of sweaters in petite sizes.. it makes me so sad that anthros clothes this year are so unwearable for me..

Agreed! That was one of my favorite lines for sweaters. Also, floreat's line seems to be so limited than in the past and seems more about lingerie… I miss all their beautiful tops. I miss a lot of the old anthro lines. 🙁

Did anyone else get a survey/prequal to participate in an in-person focus group for anthropologie next week? I'm in Dallas and I think there were two other cities – I believe DC and Philadelphia. I'm not sure yet if I'll be selected or not but hope I am so I can report back – the questions were all along the lines of this year's earlier survey and a lot of the grievances everyone has been sharing consistently here.

Not for me. Maybe you could also point them to this blog, and the comments, to get some more voices heard.

      Hope you're selected!

almost everything is ugly at anthro. I used to buy a large portion of my wardrobe there, but now I might buy something once or twice a year. I also got the survey about dresses, but it doesn't seem that anyone pays attention to the answers. With the recent 25% off promotion, I looked at the website not expecting to find anything. I did find a Samantha Sung dress that I purchased that seems to be high quality. My only other purchase recently was a pair of coclico booties that were also on sale. I'm not sure who thinks these items that anthro is pushing are cute.

This is so sad. Even though some of the clothing still occcasionally hits the mark (I'm looking at you, Susan Ruffled Pullover…) (not that I can count on finding them in my local store), but the styling and models are so lacking in any inspiration or fun. There`s just no character left! I mean, there have always been some crazy pieces and flops at Anthro (fit, fabric etc) but at least there were cool styling options and combinations that might make you look twice at something. They've so lost their way. I look at the new arrivals page and see a weird mish-mash of other retailers styles. No personality.

There are 25th anniversary parties happening at stores and just feels like there`s nothing to celebrate. But my local store does great workshops and events! I just wish they got more clothing options to draw me in regularly…

At this point I’m just throwing my hands up in disgust….if Anthro isn’t going to listen then they deserve to fail. We have been detailing the issues for YEARS now, They aren’t even trying at this point….every top is shown with jeans, jacket/cardigans paired with tees….gee thanks for the style inspiration! We couldn’t have come up with those inspired pairings without them.

And who authorized this image? This is supposed to help sell this shirt?

For anyone interested in the new Munro Embroidered dress, I bought it and love it. It fits TTS for me in my regular size Small in dresses and it's even better looking in person, super soft and so pretty. I agree with everyone on this thread about the clothes lately so thank goodness for this dress lol.

Okay, here's some hope, I just spotted the new Floral Applique Cardigan by Knitted & Knotted, classic Anthro style right there (I see some acrylic in there but at least they got the style right). Also, the Joyce Lace Blouse is looking cute:)

I agree with everything that's been said here–most of the new arrivals are downright ugly. ugh. On another note, it looks like Anthro has new markdowns–with an additional 25%.
