With colder weather, Anthropologie’s sweaters are better

This sweater looks warm, cozy, and feminine. The killer combo I’m looking for!
The Whipstitched Boucle Sweater ($98), among Anthropologie’s latest releases.

Note: Anthropologie has taken 30% off booties and select sweaters, tops and pants…today is the last day. Details here.

Temperatures in NYC plunged overnight and after a trip to Colorado where there was snow in the mountains I’m ready for sweaters! Anthropologie has released more and more cold-weather options. Inside, what’s good, what has me scratching my head, and what I’d hoped to see but haven’t yet…

Let’s start with what’s good. This year Anthropologie has a wide array of styles to choose from and I’m mostly liking what I see. Last year many retailers overreacted to the mild 2012 winter by releasing too many open knits and sweaters that weren’t warm enough. This year they’ve gone back to making sweaters that are, well, sweaters. Warm, thick and yummy snuggable. I like the color story Anthro’s chosen this year with creamy ivories, soft peaches and pinks and blacks infused with pops of color. Also? Fuzzy sweaters. I kind of love them!

I’m a big fan of cowlnecks so it’s great to see lots of options this year. I notice more cashmere and wool than fake stuff which is great! Even the ponchos, not typically something I look at, are appealing.

Last year I wasn’t ready for all the cropped sweaters. This year I’d like to invest in one or maybe two (especially a turtleneck version) but Anthro seems to have moved on from them entirely. There also isn’t much from Sleeping on Snow or Knitted & Knotted, the brands I mostly think of (along with Moth) when it comes to Anthropologie sweaters.

There are some oddities I’ve noticed too. Among them, it’s really hard to find a button-down cardigan in Anthropologie’s assortment! Seriously, see for yourself. It seems that 90% of Anthro’s options are open cardigans. Yes, open cardis can be belted. However, for me an open cardigan is much less practical than a buttondown. An open cardi is more casual to me, making it harder to elevate to work-ready. Great for the weekend, tougher for the office. I hate how open cardis fly apart in the wind outside…a button or two is always appreciated. I do like that the open cardigans are mostly longer, which makes them easier to pair with a dress.

You’re drunk, Anthropologie: Belle Meade Fringe Sweater ($348), Fringed Colorblock Pullover ($298), Nador Fringed Cardigan ($348), Carina Jacket ($248), Flequillo Fringed Cardigan ($398).

Which sweaters have caught your eye? Which ones have you tried on, liked, not liked?
