Outfits: Playing around with color tones

When I’m stuck on how to put together an outfit, one of my favorite games to play is tone-on-tone.

I’ll pick a single color — blue, green, purple, etc. — and build a simple look all in that color. If you’re feeling bold you can do an entire head-to-toe look in one color like the lilac shade above. You can go darker on top and lighter on the bottom like the pink look, or darker on the bottom and lighter on top like the light blue look on the far right above.

Even patterns can play this game, as with the dark blue and green looks above. Accessorize with neutrals and you’re all set. I find this game works best with colorful tones. You wouldn’t want an all beige outfit and some tones like mustard on yellow can be very hard to pull off depending on your skin tone. In those cases I’ll usually mix in another color, like white, to make it all come together.

Do you ever wear tone-on-tone outfits?
