FREE SHIPPING is back…for Canada. Plus, why Quebec won’t have Anthropologie.com for much longer

Just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving, a perk is here just for our neighbors to the North. Now through October 8, 2012, Canadian Anthropologie lovers can get FREE SHIPPING on their orders of $150+ on Anthro’s website.

It’s very nice to see this perk, especially since Canada was left out of the last two free shipping promotions. But of course I’m envious and wish the USA had been included.

In other Canadian Anthropologie news, Québec will soon have its first Anthropologie when a store opens at 2120 Rue de la Montagne in Montréal on October 12. That’s fantastic news for Anthro lovers in the area but unfortunately the store opening comes with a huge downside.

Québec (much like France in the 1990s) has some quirky laws about language. Determined to keep French the official language of the provence the government rigorously bans any business website that has a store in Québec but no French website. Anthropologie’s website is currently only available in English so come October 12 the Québécois will no longer be able to shop for Anthro online.

The whole give me French or give me death policy didn’t work very well in France and I honestly can’t imagine it’s helpful to Québec either. But on the other hand, though there is a time investment involved it’s really not that hard to translate a website into another language, especially a romance language like French-Canadian. There’s open-source software available to start the conversion and then a swoop through by a Canadian programmer would help soften the rest for syntax. I’m sad for those in and around Montreal that this standoff will cause them to lose out. Hopefully some kind of solution comes through and soon!

Canadians, are you excited about the free shipping promotion? And the newest store opening?
