OOTD: Hot in the City, part 2

Happy Sunday! Continuing where I left off with yesterday’s OOTD post, this post is a mix of weekend wear and work wear. This one kicks off with the weekend.

I am a big believer in the power of dark denim. When you have the right pair on it can make you look taller and more put together. I’ve been very happy with the AG crops I bought last year. They’ve retained their dark wash nicely (I wash them inside out) and the length is pretty good. If they were an inch longer they’d hit me at the perfect spot. I tried on this year’s version hoping for similar magic but sadly the fit was off for me.

For this weekend look I threw on the orange Winding Indus Tank. Anthro calls it red motif but I think it looks pure orange. The tank is a little sheer so I have a grey cami on underneath. The banding on the top is right at my hips, which I realize is not the most flattering look for me but I’m willing to look beyond it because the top is so damn comfortable. And from the back it’s also beautiful.

Funny moment of the day: an SA at one of the NYC Anthros complimented my necklace and then asked where I got it. The answer? Anthro, of course!

It’s a double-shot for the crops. This outfit is a work look. I haven’t worn my Through the Clouds Tank as often as I thought I would. I think it will get more wear after this look — as soon as I was fully put together I was quite pleased with how it all turned out. It’s a pain having to layer a cami under the tank but it’s necessary. I hope Anthro kills the sheer thing next year.

Also making a repeat appearance are my trusty Raazle peep toes. These shoes have broken in nicely and are now one of my most comfortable pairs. The washed grey is fantastic because it coordinates with nearly anything. I couldn’t find the actual earrings I wore online so the pair shown is similar. Mine are oval filigree with the same little beads around the outside. Does anyone remember the name of the oval earrings?

Pilcro’s Brass Band Tank was too soft to resist. I found it stretches a surprising amount over the course of the day though — I originally bought the top in a medium but it was so loose by the end of the day that I had to throw on a cardigan to stay decent. So I went back and bought a small. Expect the medium to be on my sale blog soon. The tank will make an excellent layering top come chilly weather.

The sandals are a new acquisition. I like to keep my feet covered so I like that these sandals protect the tops of mine from the sun while still letting my toes show. The long necklace works with the long tank to create a nice lean line. Overall this look makes me seem tall and streamlined, just as I like it.

Even though it’s summer black is still out in full force in the city. Occasionally I’ll notice that I seem to be the only one popping color for what seems like blocks. Black to me denotes serious so when clients come in or if i have a big meeting it’s the color I immediately reach for.

I’m glad the Kyoto Medallion Top finally went on sale. I ended up ordering an 8 instead of my usual 6 because the 6 felt just a bit tight around my hips. One issue though — the shoulder strap shown sidewards in the product photo above the IRL shots kept pulling its partner strap down too. So throughout the day I was subconsciously (and then consciously) tugging at it. I thought I had outsmarted the problem the second time around by wearing a brooch but it still slid down. Final verdict? The 8 is a bit loose up top for me. Sigh.

My Snowscape Tank was waiting patiently in my closet to be worn again. It was hidden between a couple of blouses and revealed itself when I was doing my late summer closet purge. Despite its name it’s ready for warm weather. So add in a pencil skirt (my beloved Many Moods Skirt, natch) and a nice pair of pumps and voila! Instant work outfit.

I feared the weight of the tank’s embellished neckline would pull it down but even at the end of the day it was fine. The hammered silk did wrinkle unfortunately but I was at least expecting it and used my in-office cardigan to minimize the effect. A quick stop at home to steam the top and I was at Happy Hour before anyone even noticed I’d arrived late.

Sometimes a work look calls for a little bit of fun. There’s a ballerina chic trend quietly happening right now and after seeing an entire section of subway riders with buns on top of their heads I decided to take part in my own way.

My modified tutu was made from J.Crew’s Gold Lamé skirt and Ann Taylor Loft’s Floral Chiffon Tee, aka the Rose Tee for less. (Ebay sellers will still happily sell you the ringspun original at only $$$ above retail price!! Or claim the outlet version is the original!) With a few delicate pretty accessories the look was complete. I may not have the body of a dancer but for one day I pretended to look like one.

Sometimes I will get inspiration from the blogging community. While prepping guest posts before my Mexico trip, I visited Bonnie’s wonderful blog Small Town Fashionista and saw the delightful Limited dress you see above in this post. I was instantly in love! She looked so fantastic in the dress that I could only hope to borrow a bit of that awesomeness myself.

I was even more excited when I saw that the dress was on super sale (it pops in and out of stock these days). I wore it to work right after I got back from Mexico and had one of those days where everything seems to go right. So this dress is now in heavy rotation with me, which is both good and bad. Good because I feel fanfriggintastic in it, bad because the dress is low quality and probably won’t make it to next year. Boo.

Back to the weekend. What does one wear to shop when it’s nearly 100 degrees out? If you’re me, shorts and an airy tee. The Foliage Fancy Tee has been great for staying cool. I’ve found it’s also very slimming due to its length and close cut. It has enough room to fit over my hips without stretching but airy enough that it doesn’t stick to me.

I felt terribly underdressed when my friends and I ended up at Bergdorf Goodman until another girl came up to me in the same tee! She had hers over a ruffle tiered skirt and looked quite cute. New York City has a reputation for being mean but the two of us were laughing over it. We met up again later at the Tom Ford beauty counter, where I treated myself to one of his new lipsticks, Vanilla Suede. The color is fantastic and the lipstick tastes really good. Like, too good. I want to eat it when I put it on.

Each year my friends throw a hipster picnic. (They live in Williamsburg. If you’re a New Yorker, this makes sense.) The prerequisite is that you must come dressed as a hipster which can be harder than it sounds. This year I was fretting over what to wear and even considered repeating my outfit from 2 years ago at one point. Then J from The Look 4 Less alerted me to this fantastic updated Daisy Buchanan look:

…and I was sold! Well, on the look, not the price. The Great Gatsby is my all-time favorite book. The look is hipster without the douchiness. Guys have it so easy when it comes to this stuff, I swear. There was no way you’d catch me in socks with oxfords but with a couple of slight tweaks I knew this would be the look for me. And so I set out looking for appropriate pieces.

Luckily, I already owned a J.Crew top with a similar neckline and a cardigan that would do nicely. I love the belt in Shopbop’s look but they don’t even bother linking to it themselves so instead I doubled up on two skinny J.Crew belts I already own (are we sensing a pattern yet in the brands of this outfit?). Topping it all off is my lovely Flora Fedora from Anthropologie. Ready for a picnic? Most definitely. All in all I only had to buy one piece (the skirt) to reproduce the look. Too bad my Secret Keeper Mini Bag didn’t arrive in time for the picnic — it finishes the outfit off nicely!
