The weekend in-store community post

Note: I will run new posts over the weekend but continue to have this post on top of the blog to encourage participation.

I have noticed a lot of community members sharing in-store deals and spots in the comments of various posts. Inspired by the weekly Seek & Find posts started by the lovely Alexis over at J.Crew Aficionada, I think now is a good time to start a similar weekly post here.

This post is for community members to trade information. You can ask for help in finding an item, report back on what you saw in-store at your local Anthro, ask general questions, make a request, or just stop by to say hello. I love how helpful this community can be!

Some FAQs….
– What does “sub” mean?
It means that people are subscribing to the comment thread. You can do this by checking the “send follow-up comments to x email address” box in the comment form.
– Someone in the comments said they wanted to buy an item from me, but it’s been x hours and I haven’t heard squat. What should I do?
I give people 24 hours for the benefit of the doubt. After that move on to the next person that contacted you.
– Someone said they returned an item at the store 20 minutes ago but I just called the store and it’s gone. What gives?!?
A store associate might have taken a fancy to it or a customer might have grabbed it. Maybe it’s just at the bottom of a big ol’pile. Unfortunately, you’re out of luck.

    Ok, last one, as my little one's naptime is almost over…and therefore, so is my "break"! 🙂 Quite a few pop-backs in the October 2009 catalog. I imagine prices in-store would be lower (I got a PA on an Oct pop-back from last week – $19.95 down to $9.95!), so you might be able to get a PA if you bring in your receipt:Call of the West Booties – Size 7 – $249.95 – p. 7Cozy Trio Cardi – Red: Size L – $29.95 – p. 9Plum Flower Tunic – Size 2 – $19.95 – p. 11Short and Sweet Jacket – Brown: 2, 6, 10, 14; Gold: 8; Black: 4, 6, 14 – $59.95 – p. 11Joe’s Knit Chelsea – Black: Size 30; Plum: Size 26 – $39.95 – p. 12Malted Barley Boots – Size 6.5, 7, 7.5 – $189.95 – p. 13Double-Twist Sweater – Red: M – $49.95 – p. 15Frill-Seeker Satchel – $169.95 – p. 28Pondside Cardi – Blue: S, M, L; Pink; M, L – $29.95 – p. 33Triple-Strand Headband – Gold: $9.95 – p. 41Splash of Color Cardi – XL – $39.95 – p. 42

  58. April 23, 2010 / 10:14 pm

Anon @ 6:01 p.m.Yes, sometimes store prices are lower than catalog prices. I'm not exactly sure why – maybe someone else can chime in with additional info.I've just made it a practice now that if I buy something from an older catalog, I take the receipt into my local store and see if the in-store price was lower. The two times I've done that (one item was Dec. 2008, one was Oct 2009), both items were $9.95 in stores (as compared to $49.95 and $19.95 online respectively). And my store had no trouble giving me a PA both times. I don't know if this is standard practice or not.I did just order something online (still waiting to receive) from a pop-back that I know someone else on this community received a PA for. I tried calling CS to see if they would give me a PA over the phone, but they said that b/c the item was no longer in stores, they couldn't do it (they said there need to be 3 of them in stock, or something like that). When I receive the item, I plan to take the receipt to my local store and try to get the PA on it as well – it would be a $50 savings, so it's worth the trouble!I hope that helps. 🙂

@anon…wow, i didn't know that. I did order from an older catalogue, so I am definitely going to the store to check the store price. one more question, does the item have to be in stock at the store for me to get the lower price if it is indeed lower than catalogue price?thanks a bunch!

  62. April 23, 2010 / 11:01 pm

Anon @ 6:25 p.m.:I think as long as it's within the 14-day PA period, you can get a PA in stores for an older item even if it's not in stock in the store. (I'm quite sure that the Dec 2008 item I got a PA for wasn't in my store.) Again, I don't know if *all* stores do PA for online pop-back purchases, or if my store is just generous. Anyone else have experience with this?It would be nice if the catalog and the stores were all in sync on the pricing. It makes it pretty tricky, and if I hadn't (recently) joined this community, I never would have known about the pricing discrepancy.

  63. April 23, 2010 / 11:08 pm

Does anyone out there who owns the Reed shirtdress have experience with how it washes? Does it shrink much? The one I have is already a little high-waisted on me, so I don't want it to get higher. It fits perfectly otherwise, but if it shrinks it definitely won't! Not sure if I should dry clean. Thanks!

  66. April 24, 2010 / 12:06 am

Anon @ 7:55– I've washed my Reed Shirtdress several times and it has not shrunk. However, I do not dry it. I line dry it, so it doesn't shrink. Might be a little wrinkle. But nothing a little ironing can't fix.

The Swirling Villages dress (Moulinette Soeurs) is still available if you access it through the Nov catalog, in 0,2,8,10 & 12. It's $49.Its actually a really cute dress, and that contrasting belt is removable.I wore it a few months ago on the first date with my now current boyfriend! I'm thinking about getting a second one as a backup in case anything happens to mine. It's a cute dress.

I've just returned from the Bellevue store. They had two reed shirtdresses sz 6: one solid red and one green. Lots of Twist & Flow tops on sale, sizes S and M. That gold Chie Mihara (foil something) sz. 38.5 (for 199.00) and a pair of short Frye boots (I think it was a sz 8, it is not the "call of the west", but a similar model and a lighter color).I have the plaid blue and plaid red Reed shirtdress, both are sz 10. I found them in a sz 12 and will sell both sz 10. My email is marcelaosuarez at hotmail dot com.

Hi Ladies,Please remove this if the posting is inappropriate but in case anyone is still looking for a pair of Budding T-Straps in a 7, I have a pair brand new with box that I haven't worn yet that I'm looking to sell. The thing is, I purchased this at an outrageous price on eBay when the frenzy for these shoes occurred and the price I paid was $250. I know it's a lot but I'm looking to recoup what I paid since I've never even taken them out of my closet. I might consider offers but I'm hoping to stick with just getting back my losses. And I don't mind paying shipping out of my own pocket. Please let me know if you're interested. Thanks. da1nonlyang3l@yahoo.com

So my comment is really a question about in-store practices that I wanted to see if anyone else has observed: I read an article on jezebel (not the most reliable source perhaps) about how anthropologie SA's often follow around or are alerted to people they think may be shoplifting. The article focused on the fact that perhaps certain races are unfairly targeted, but my question relates to something else the article said: it noted that when a SA offers to "take things to the counter" for you (or I guess also to the dressing room) it's "code" for they're suspicious of your walking around with all the merchandise in your hands and think you may shoplift. Is this true? Every time I'm in the store, an SA tries to take the things from me & put them in a dressing room- I always thought they were maybe being pushy/helpful, but maybe not. Has this been your experience? If it's bec. I've been targeted as a potential shoplifter, I'm flabbergasted, as 1) I'm not & never have been a shoplifter and 2) I think I appear non-threatening- I'm petite and I'm a mom (I dress casually but neat).I'm curious about others' experience and again, sorry this is off topic.mel

  99. April 24, 2010 / 3:54 pm

v_iaggio – thanks for the link! Unfortunately I don't think the items are clickable in that version though. I think the December '09 catalog is pretty much down for the count at this point.mel – interesting question. I can tell you that Anthro SAs almost always ask if they can start a room for me (usually because I'm carrying around an armful of items). I don't see it as a theft-deterrent, I'm thankful not to carry all that stuff around. As for the counter tactic that has only happened to me when I decide to buy jewelry from their case. I'm curious to hear about others' experiences though. Do you have a link to the Jezebel article?

  100. April 24, 2010 / 3:58 pm

anon @ 11:49 – i disagree.working in retail your meant to float around and help clients. if they are holding stuff in their hands, you are to walk it to the fitting room and/or walk it to be held at the desk/register area. we used a code if we thought someone was a shoplifter, BUT that didnt mean we took their garments from them when they would be walking around. some SA's take your garments and can somewhat "claim you" as a sale — if they are still going on commission. SA's at different stores (Anthro included) always help me. There is no real way to profile a shoplifter, not everyone has big baggy clothing, etc.

    April 24, 2010 / 4:00 pm

They always offer to hold my items for me in the dressing room or offer me a basket if they are available. If I have a return and they see me walk in with an anthro bag, they ask if I want them to hold it at the front until I shop. I would think that is not only being helpful, but that does protect them from people who might try to shoplift. A smart practice in my opinion. As for taking things from you to put in the fitting room, I think that is just good customer service. I don't think it has anything to do with shoplifting because I would think it would be harder to shoplift with a bunch of items in your hands.

    April 24, 2010 / 4:09 pm

Thanks for sharing other experiences. I'm glad to know I'm not singled out and that the SAs are just being helpful by offering to take the clothes, as I'd hoped. My feelings would have honestly been kind of hurt, because I've always thought they were trying to show great customer service by offering!mel

I'm african american, and I have been followed around at anthropologie. I am not a shoplifter, but to anthro, my hue suggests I steal i suppose. Sounds like the new Arizona law.

  104. April 24, 2010 / 4:34 pm

I shop at anthro about once a week with my daughter. The employees all know know) and if I have a return they always ask to hold it up front. Now I just hand it to them as I come in. They also always take the items I am holding and start a dressing room or put them in the back even if it is just one or 2 things. I really think it is just store policy. Maybe it is policy to help avoid shoplifting. I know my store knows I am not a shoplifter and they do the same things that is says are profiling. Just my 2 cents.

Argh, I read that Jezebel article when I first started working at Anthro and…it really frustrated me. Still does.I did want to chime in though about the taking the clothes to the fitting room and offering to take your items (return or "still shopping") to the counter. In Anthro world, these are definitely acts that serve a double purpose – customer service and theft prevention. However, don't misunderstand, none of these are done to single out an individual, but are moreso a blanket policy. As a customer, when I have an armful of items, I am THRILLED when an SA offers to start a fitting room for me. But this allows the SAs in the fitting room to at least count and get an idea of what you are taking in the fitting room with you. Especially when you have more items because it is much harder to keep track of. And that is done for every single customer that walks in there – not just specific people :). Anthro's main stance on theft is that the best way to prevent it is through excellent/heightened customer service. You are less likely to steal from "Annie," (that sweet girl who introduced herself, started you a fitting room, and offered to grab you a great cardigan to match that skirt while she was looking for your correct size in the stock room) than you are to steal from Anthropologie. At least, at my store, we had SAs specifically walking around to basically be your personal shopper. Start your fitting rooms, help you outfit, etc. etc. It is a loss prevention tactic, but the SA's mind generally goes first to "I'm providing excellent customer service to this girl by starting her a fitting room" rather than "I think this girl is going to steal from me, I better get those clothes and dishtowels outta her grip!"I hope that helps!

My experience:I bought Midnight Daisy Cardigan in a Medium on sale on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. It was an online order. When it was delivered, I received, I noted that it was one of those online returns (to Anthro's warehouse) from the date (3/31) hand-scribbled along with someone's initials on the plastic bag with the tag sticker on it. I tried that on, it was too big, so I called online customer service and placed a new order for a Small size immediately. The same afternoon (during my lunch break), I went to my local Anthro to return the Medium and to check out more store sales.Just like some others have said above, I often take my returns straight to the counter, return first, and then do any browsing. The SA looked at the date (3/31) and the initials (N something) and told me that the SA "N" in their particular store had already processed the return on 3/31, so she was suspecting how come I had another one of the same item to return!! I politely explained to her that 1) I placed an order only on April 6th2) my invoice / receipt that clearly showed the date of order and the sale price I paid – $79.95! (I definitely didn't buy that cardi only after – and because — it went on sale)3) she could check using my Anthro card my order history that I just (that morning) placed another order for the same cardi in a size Small as a replacement item and so on. She wasn't buying it and continued to claim that I had already returned the cardi (for a sale price even before it went on sale on 3/31 at their store with SA, "N" — hahahah). I kept asking her to check my Anthro card for my 2 purchases – AFTER April 6th sale date — of this cardi in a M and S. Anyway, the store manager was called (by her) and the manager looked at the receipt, apologized to me and processed the return. I thanked the manager and told her that I always thought the initialed and dated plastic wrap for an online order means, it was someone else's return (which is OK with me) from Anthro's warehouse that I was getting and she just smiled at me.This particular SA always asked me for my Driver's Lic. whenever I shopped there (always use just one Credit Card). So whenever I get her at the counter (before this cardi return incicent and after), I always give her my Anthro card, Credit card and Driv. Lic. for her to complete the sale for me. 🙂 Don't know if it's a std. practice and there are reasons why customers get asked for DL (for purchases with no return or anything involved). I've never had to do it in any other stores!Anyway, about me: I live in a liberal, culurally and racially diverse part of Califorina. I am a dark-skinned Indo American (as in India!). My Anthro expenses per month (online and in-store) are almost always way above $500.I love Anthro's offering, and I suppose I can put up these kind of annoyances. Yes, I am jealous of others who don't have similar bad experiences. 🙂

I've got lots to say about the profiling comments but I'll have to address those later! On that note and on what MyMidnightDaisy just commented, I will quickly say that working retail for an extended period of time can make you jaded and that theft comes in all forms. It is very possible that that SA recently dealt with or was duped by a receipt scammer hence her attitude about the 3/31 return. However, it is standard policy to ask for ID regarding ANY credit card transaction. It is to prevent / check for identity theft, and when a credit card is used for payment (or debit card used as credit) the system automatically prompts the SA to check I'd and verify the signatures prior to OKAYing the sale. So it's really just to help you not make you feel badly. I always asked for every transaction :). And now when I shop if they don't ask, I offer.

  114. April 24, 2010 / 5:58 pm

I meant you can't profile a shoplifter. Some wear big jeans or a big sweatshirt. Some have a big purse. Some wear fitted jeans and a typical blouse and have a smaller purse and they can still shove things into it.My experience is the old lady with the big purse isn't shoplifting, but the younger one with the smaller bag could be.I wear sweatshirts frequently and I could care less. I don't *think* Anthro SA's operate on commission so I look at them as being attentive (and annoying). When I worked in retail I was somewhat "all over" customers. Don't get me wrong, 'all over' is how I would take it, some customers liked the attention. I personally like to be on my own to shop. BUT because I had high sales (even though I was not on commission), I made the store look good, the district manager noticed, and I was offered a promotion. Keep in mind they might not be 'profiling' you, but seeing if they can assist and make some sales.

Anon at 12:54I don't want to speak for thehalcyonlife, but just so more people don't get angered before she (he?) speaks for herself, I'll tell you how I interpreted the comment. I've often been told (when I worked in retail) that shoplifters might wear baggy clothing (not jeans) so that there is room in which to hide the items they're stealing. Long, oversized coats and loose fitting skirts (that have pockets sewn to the inside…I saw this one first-hand!) are some examples. Don't think she was talking about folks who wear baggy jeans. My 2.

I thought I'd chime in with one of my less-than-pleasant experience at anthro recently…I went to make a return for a cardigan I had purchased at my store at full price. By the time I went in for the return, the cardi had gone on sale, and I had not brought in my receipt as I thought they could look it up using my anthro card. The tags were still attached on the cardi, but when the SA rang it up, it came up as the sale price. She wasn't able to look up my antro history and gave me such attitude, as if I was trying to return an item that I had bought on sale but wanted the full refund. I was SO annoyed, but I guess I saw her point too….But then what is the use of the anthro card??? I decided not to return the cardi after all, at least until I find my original receipt…If I do find my receipt, then they shouldn't give me any trouble with my return, and refund me the original cost, even if the item went on sale, yes?Carol

  121. April 24, 2010 / 6:09 pm

I simply was implying that a shoplifter can be any person of any age, any race, wearing anything (except maybe a bathing suit with no purse…)Anyone can technically be a shoplifter. I don't work for Anthro and am no longer in retail. But from my experience, even if you are watched a little, doesn't mean you are being profiled… again, thats just my experience.

  122. Anonymous
    April 24, 2010 / 6:20 pm

its quite offensive to keep speaking of it as being "watched a little" when peopl on the board have explicitly said they have been followed. The fact of the matter is that there is RACIAL profiling that goes on. It isnt helpful to try and say its all "good customer service". Especially not coming from people who have no experience and never have experienced racial profiling. — People who have know the difference between the profiling and the norm. Get over yourself.

so there was an item that popped up in my local anthro and they have it on a special "hot items for spring" rack, but i know this item went on sale probably a month ago. i told them i thought it had and they checked and said it is showing full price! is there anything i can do? i am 100% sure this has received a mark down. has this happened to anyone else?? i was so happy that i found it in my size after i had given up over a month ago! HELP!

  140. April 24, 2010 / 11:55 pm

hey ladies! just looking for some insight 🙂 i got the unerring tank today in the mail and it is a bright china blue (which i love!) and the material is like soft cotton jersey…which is great too! BUT…when i first tried this on in the store a few weeks back, the material was more like a button down shirt or a blouse (more stiff cotton) and a more dusty faded blue color????has anyone of you lovely ladies noticed something similar to this??are the ones in the store, different that the ones purchased online??THANKS for your help :0)♥Meg

  141. April 24, 2010 / 11:56 pm

Anon @ 7:47 – What is the item? Also, sometimes Anthro re-releases items in new colors (eg. the rare bloom tee is now on sale in the solid, teal, pink, and navy, but has a printed doppelganger that is still full price).

  142. April 24, 2010 / 11:59 pm

Megan – that's REALLY odd! One similar case that I can think of is the wind-rippled tee! When it was on the cover of the October catalog, it had full-length sleeves but then in-store it had 3/4 length sleeves. And THEN if you ordered the wind rippled tee from catalog/online, you were getting the full-length sleeved version lol. Ohhhh Anthro…

I didn't check them all, but saw 0,2,4,6-also say several Firth Form Shifts. They were behind other dresses. I think there were 4 and one was a 12, 2.4.6 I think. The Penciled Abronia Skirt was there also. There were several folded on a shelf.Hope this helps someone.

I don't know if anyone else out there is as enamored with the Rain Pools cardi as I am, but the sold-out black color is available in all sizes at the San Antonio location, 210-641-1029. As of Friday night, all sizes were there. They also had 2 red and some grey, don't know the sizes. Very well-stocked sale-room, so try there if you still can't find stuff you're looking for.

Hi girls!I have a question… I know online exclusives exist, but do in-stores, too? I saw a top in Anthro recently (full stock) that I really liked, but there's no trace of it online. Or maybe sometimes things appear in-store before online?

  184. April 26, 2010 / 3:07 am

Allie, you're right on both counts. There are certain brands that are store-only (viola for example) but more than likely the item you saw will be online eventually but has not made it there yet.

  185. April 26, 2010 / 4:20 am

  186. April 26, 2010 / 5:31 am

@cravenmaven It was called the "Neptune Chair," Anthro style #76008. Sorry but don't know the manufacturer. Maybe if you email CS, they'll be able to tell you more.http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/produ…@Glenda – glad you liked it! Might need to try my Reed this way too. 😉

This may be a long shot, but here goes -An anonymous poster commented here a couple of weeks ago that she mailed an Unexpected Treasures Cardigan to the La Jolla store. (Thanks, Anon!) I called the store to ask that they call me when they received the cardigan so I could buy it.Well, the lovely SAs called me yesterday to say that they have the sweater to sell me, but they haven't been able to process the return yet, b/c the sender didn't include her credit card info. Anon, if you're out there, the store has been trying to call you, but they said your phone isn't going to voicemail, so they can't leave a message. They asked me if I knew how to get in touch with you, and unfortunately Anon, I don't have your name or email address! So, if you see this, please contact the La Jolla store so they can process your refund. 🙂

Hi everyone,Don't know if anyone is looking for this, but it's a bit of an older item:Saw two Declarative Skirts (1 L, 1 XL) for $10 at the Boston store. Many of the more recent sale items were wiped out, but I did see that they had 2 Solar Star blouses (both size 12), 3 openwork vines skirts (6, 12, and one other), and one size 14 (I think) tic-tac-toe blouse.
