Metapost: Keep your blog safe.

With apologies for straying off-topic, this is a short PSA reminding you (and me!) to protect your data. You see twice this week someone tried to reset the password on this blog without my permission. I’m not really sure why anyone would want to take it over…but I long ago gave up trying to rationalize the mind of the irrational.

I started thinking about how sad I’d be if someone got into any of my blogs and started changing the posts…or deleting them…or just generally removing my control. Yeah the blog is something I do on the side as a creative outlet. It doesn’t make me any money but it makes me happy and I realized I’d be pretty devastated if I lost it all.

So I made my passwords stronger, set up a secondary email and changed my security question. It’s not foolproof but it’s something. And anyone else who would care about losing their blog should do the same. Most free blogging services don’t really keep backups of your data so once it’s gone it’s probably gone. And that would be sad. I enjoy reading your posts. Protect yourself before something happens.

Update 8:49 PM: For anyone curious, I discovered a way to back up a Blogger blog by downloading all the posts as XML. Instructions are here.

Yeah I am pretty annoyed but the bright side is that Blogger's controls worked as intended so I didn't lose anything. 🙂

Thanks for this info. I know in Blogger you can download your template to your computer so you can save your basics (which I do every time I add to the layout), but I don't think that would help with posts. Your blog is lovely.

Hey Roxy, I've been following yours and Gigi's blog for awhile now and I love them both. She mentioned watermarking her photographs for an added layer of protection awhile back, so that might be a good idea, just in case so content doesn't get stolen. I hope that helps…I'm going to post the link to an abc.com article about similar types of security breaches on blogs recently that were kind of disturbing. <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=8240460&page=1http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=8240460… />I hope that helps! Thanks for the blog and have a great day!

I learn something new everyday… thank you for posting this. I am still in the throws of putting together a new blog myself and there are so many obstacles, this is just one more facet I never thought about! Thanks Roxy!
