I know this sounds terribly greedy since there are already 3 Anthropologies on Manhattan Island proper but I really want a 4th! Both the New York Observer and The Real Deal are reporting that Anthropologie is working on a ground floor retail deal in Hearst Tower (West 57th/8th Ave).
Sure 57th Street is a prestigious shopping strip with luxury brands galore. But I find this curious for a few reasons. First, Anthropologie has a location not too far away in Rockefeller Center. Secondly, the hugemongous Time Warner Center with copious amounts of mall-style shopping is just a couple blocks away from Hearst Tower. So why not go there?
Thirdly, and I admit totally selfishly, I want an Anthropologie further downtown! I’m talking South Street Seaport, World Financial Center or (ahem) Wall St-located please. There’s a retail footprint available almost across the street from me right next to Tiffany’s. True Religion is right up the street. Or I suppose I could be bothered to walk west all the way to Broadway across from Century 21’s shoe outpost. Come on Anthro — Financial District needs you.
And if you snark and veto that idea well then how about the Upper East Side on Third Avenue in the 70s? Parent company Urban Outfitters opened a Free People store there a few months before I moved downtown and it seems to be doing well. Or maybe the Upper West Side on Broadway in the upper 60s? Diversify your locale a bit.
And if none of that appeals to you dear Anthro, please consider Oklahoma City, where my friend Christine has been begging for an Anthropologie store for years.
Hi! I love your blog :). This is unrelated to the above post, but this morning the Anthropologie website design on my computer is completely new and revamped. I haven't seen the change mentioned anywhere yet. I am using Safari on a Mac (the PCs at work are loading the old site), so depending on which browser you are using, I wasn't sure if you would have seen it yet. Just a heads up :). It's very different, and definitely makes the darker background on the product shots look better.
There is 100% going to be a 4th Anthro on the west side. I don't know where it will be yet though 🙂
