Anthropologie Fall 2009 Preview

Update April 1 PM: This story is like, totally an April Fools’ joke. Please don’t take this seriously. 🙂

Anthropologie has certainly been taking some risks lately, from Hammer Pants to Bubble Skirts to Jumpers. They have always been about making personal statements and as fashion moves towards bold and boisterous, Anthropologie is interpreting trends in its own way.

Come fall, it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of 80s. We’ve been getting hints of it lately with menswear as women’s wear (i.e. the Sweet William Blouse, no longer available online) and the proliferation of leggings. Now, from the looks of Anthro’s fall presentation some other 80s trends will make their way into stores: neon, statement shoulders, oversized sweater dresses and legwarmers.

Though Anthropologie has seen sales rise over the first quarter, Urban Outfitters has seen overall profits drop while operating expenses continue to rise. As a result buyers’ travel budgets were cut and improvisation was required. As buyer Michelle Fauxmation told Fashion Nooz:

“Normally I would have traveled to countries like India, Morocco or Spain over the past few months identifying new trends. But because of the economy I was forced to stay closer to home. I went to local yard sales trying to find a new direction. I noticed that the 80s seem to be returning in a big way.”

In related news, Anthropologie announced it is considering unveiling a Prom Line called Printemps in time for the Spring 2010 season. The line will feature dresses in colors such as chartreuse, aquamarine, hot pink and mauve. Preview designs from Anthro’s internal design team revealed looks with large bows, halter tops with maxi skorts and one look that featured a sequined top with a lace overlay.

(Happy April Fool’s Day folks.)

Thank goodness none of this is real. Unless in tribute to "Lost," I am actually just now remembering a time-warped past that I was previously in working as a designer for Anthropologie where they announced their intent to actually produce designs like this. In which case I will do everything in my power to prevent this outcome!
