Quick Hits: Tops, Dresses & A Diversion

Anthropologie’s copywriter and I had similar thoughts upon spotting the Jewels & Gems Tank ($98): “oooh, sparkly shinies!”

Just an easy, breezy top that would look great under a blazer or cardigan. This is a medium above. By itself yes it does flutter away from the body but I didn’t feel like it made me look pregnant. I don’t usually like this style but Language made their top soft and airy enough that I was happy with the result. There was one pulled thread on the top I tried but the rest of the stack was OK when I looked later. Make sure you inspect your shirt.

I am a sucker for diamonds even when in fabric form. Of course then I was drawn to Deletta’s Beso V-Neck ($48). This shirt is cut to flatter but the shoulders gave me slight pause.

Please pardon the sheerness, which I mentioned in my product page summary review. The shoulder ended up working fine and I loved the way this shirt hugged my shape in all the right spots. I hate the idea of wearing a cami under something so fitted though so I would probably buy the purple or black over this red. I am wearing a size small in the photo above.

A mix of mod, floral and romance makes up Maeve’s Giverny Dress ($168). Maeve has had so many pretty dresses this summer and not one has fit me correctly. Knowing that I was hoping this would finally be the one that lived up to its loveliness when I put it on.

Unfortunately it did not. It’s not that I hate it. I just don’t love it. The top is smocked and the smocking ended too high for my shape. I see now why the catalogue photo has a belted sweatercoat layered over the dress…it makes the shape much more flattering. I feel a belt would improve the look but this dress does not call for one at all. I am wearing the medium and maybe a small would have worn better but I doubt it. Shannon over at Wardrobe Review also tried on the dress.

And finally, isn’t this outfit just divine? OK maybe not. But when you’re in a rush to try things on you make outfits for the sake of seeing shapes and drape. Gigi had tried on J.Crew’s gold coin skirt (her review here). Note the lookbook photo on her post shows it as a-line…in real life not so much apparently. I am wearing a 6 in the skirt and because of the elastic waist it was still practically falling off of me. Wonky fit to be sure. For trying-on purposes I paired it with the Ribbon-Front Top ($88) which I so desperately wanted to love but neither the 4, 6, 8, nor 10 looked quite right on me. It was always just a bit too big on top and too tight at my hips. The top layer is the Professor Blazer which is not online yet. It was nice, tailored and great for work but I have no use for it at the moment. Back to the rack this lovely outfit as a whole went.

Wow, I'm glad it's not just me where sizing across various brands has been all over the map lately! I also did a few reviews of some new Anthro arrivals: some shoes, shirts, and even a way pricey Leifsdottir piece that of course I love. You can read them here.

I've been a longtime lurker but 'love your blog, especially since you've started with the IRL reviews of the Anthro pieces! 🙂 Thanks! And the J.Crew outfit…even if you claim that you threw it on haphazardly, I could see it work. 😉 I'm with you on that ribbon-tie top – I had actually bought it, thinking that maybe if I took it home with me, it would suddenly, magically fit in all the right places. Uhm, not so much. So back it went. 🙁
