Reviews: Whirling Ruffles Sweater Dress & Florry Dress, plus an APB

Hee hee. Couldn’t resist.

I think I’m turning the corner from disliking sweater dresses to maybe kinda liking them! It doesn’t hurt that Knitted & Knotted is churning out some real beauties this year. I had some luck with the Snowdrop Shift ($158, review here) and that trend continued with the Whirling Ruffles Sweater Dress ($188).

I am not as in love with this dress as I am with the Snowdrop Shift. But what I do really like about this dress is that it’s unique in an exquisite way. The ruffle looks like cascading waves. It continues around the back and back to the front in a twisting, spiraling motion. I wish the ruffles were more diagonal the way the model & I are making them at the top of this post. However I think it looks lovely as it is. I tried on the small. The material was not itchy to me. This dress gets the Roxy stamp of approval. See it on Natalie here and Kim here.

Were it not for Embers’s request, I might have missed the Florry Dress ($158). What a gorgeous dress I would have missed out on! The product description says this dress is 36″ long but I’m going to have to say negatory to that. It’s more like 34″. The bodice of this dress is so unbelievably flattering. Really the whole dress is flattering. I would pair this with tights and either mary janes or boots.

Now for the potentially bad news. I am wearing an XS in the photos above. Yeah, me. Extra small. Normally I’m a medium. Now since it’s a sweater dress it might have stretched a bit to help me out. But the small was pretty loose on me. So anyone who is naturally an XS is most likely out of luck here. The good news is that peeps that are normally an XL should be able to fit into the L. Sizing wonkiness aside this dress is also Roxy approved. Thanks Embers!

Finally, I need your help! I’m putting out an All Points Bulletin for the dress you see above. I missed the Behind-the-Clouds Dress (now $70) online and the NYC stores don’t have it anymore. I am looking for the slate color you see above in a size 6 or 8. If you happen to see this in your local Anthro I would be so grateful if you could let me know!

I love how you mimicked the model while wearing the Swirling Ruffles Dress. And it does look quite nice on you. I have to say, you look good in most dresses. I am usually a skirt/top girl since I am looong waisted. So, just a little green eyed here! Again, tanks for the IRL reviews. I think it also helps me see Anthro items I might have missed otherwise.

Did you call the Customer Service number to see if they find the dress for you in your size? They can check inventory in all their stores and tell you which one has the dress in your size.

I think if the ruffles had been too diagonal it might have created lopsided boobage. But I *do* like how you modeled it like the Anthro pic. The 2nd dress was made for you. You need that one. 🙂

I love the Florry dress but also called "negatory" on it being 36" long. I'm 5'8", long torso, and when I bent over it went way too far up for my comfort. I would consider it on sale, and wear with tights. It just seemed very short to me.

Roxy – I'm so glad someone else other than me had good luck with the Whirling Ruffles Sweater Dress. I tried it on this weekend and fell in love, and didn't expect to after some negative reviews. It looks lovely on you, as does the 2nd dress!

Georgine, you are too kind. :)Diem, you are a rock star. I had called customer service yesterday and they were updating inventory so I couldn't do a store search. But on your reminder I called back and found one! On hold for me in FLA. Thank you.Gigi – Good point about lopsided boobage. LOL. Jacquelyn – Glad it wasn't just me! I noticed your review on the product page. In the winter I don't mind short as much because of tights. I like to pretend that they camouflage my legs.Christina, it really is too cute. My friend bought it over the weekend and is just itching to wear it.Kim – did you post the review already? I might have missed it. I will update this post with a link to yours.

Roxy — as of Friday, the Anthro in Scottsdale, AZ had the charcoal Behind-The-Clouds dress in an 8. Not that I live there 😉 But I was trying to locate the same dress in the teal color, and they were telling me their availability. I almost got it myself, but resisted! Somewhat coincidentally, I found the teal dress in one of the New York stores =)

Hey Roxy,I love that Florry dress on you-I wonder why they sizing is so off on sweater dresses. I have the Moth water garden dress in a SMALL with my 34 D chest and it is kinda loose! I am not a small! I'm anywhere from a 6-10 in dreses. Kinda crazy but I'm glad it looks so cute! I'm going to have to try it on at the Man Shops Globe event tomorrow! Thanks for the review!

goldenmeans, thank you! I will give them a call as well — better to be safe than sorry. Embers, enjoy the Man Shops Globe event! I watched the show on demand over the weekend but am waiting (impatiently) until Wednesday to share my thoughts so as not to spoil anything. Can't wait to hear how the event goes.

Roxy/goldenmeans, just FYI there are two Scottsdale stores, so if you call one of them Roxy and it is not the one with the dress you want, try the other. They are literally about a 10 minute drive from each other, which seems so weird because the Phoenix valley area is so spread out, and those are the only two Anthros.

Hi Roxy,On Sat. I bought the Behind the Clouds dress and they did have a few left for $69.99. Anthro might have had a size 8, no 6 for sure. It was at the Pasadena, CA location. Give them a call. Love the dress, so cute! Hope you find it!

I bought the florry dress and wore it to a wedding reception this weekend. I am little frustrated though…it is a super cute dress but it is very low cut on me. My niece spent most of the night grabbing at my boobs which was also the first place most people looked when talking to me! Do you have any brilliant suggestions for me that won't alter the hang or look of the dress too much. This morning I was fiddling with it and actually tried it on backwards to see what kind of look that gave me. My boobs were covered but still unsure if I can solve the problem.

Hi, Which month's catalog that Behind-the-Clouds dress was in?Thanks!

  17. October 5, 2009 / 8:55 pm

Hi Anonymous, I'm not sure that the Behind-The-Clouds Dress ever made it to a catalog. Usually when they're from the catalog there's a 3rd model shot on the product page. I could be mistaken though. I'll flip through the ones I have tonight to verify. Sorry I can't be more helpful!

PS if anyone else knows please feel free to chime in!

Call the Georgetown VA store. I got one last week, mine was a 0, but there were several perhaps a 6/8? It's nice, just a bit thin in material. I am still debating keeping….What do you recommend for wearing with it?

  21. October 8, 2009 / 2:10 pm

Hmm, excellent question Anon. When it gets here I'm going to do an OOTD post. I would love to do a long wrap sweater over it but I need to see how the sleeves react to a sweater first. Stay tuned! 🙂
