Reviews: Aniseed Skirt, Ruched Pansy Tee, Buds & Stripes Tee

When I saw this catalog shot I thought the model looks a little silly in the Aniseed Skirt ($128). It is almost swallowing her whole. For once, I had better luck than the model.

I found this skirt to be fantastic on. My guess is that if you are slight with a straighter shape this skirt is not going to work on you. You’ll feel like you’re wearing a huge bubble. This skirt really suits curves. I grabbed my true size 8 and it was pretty loose at the waist. I will most likely size down to a size 6 to buy this instant winner from Eva Franco. Since it runs large it’s possible that’s what is throwing the proportions off for the model.

I think the little square knot on the front is kind of odd. Like there was a bow there and the last minute Anthropologie edited. The side view of this skirt also leaves something to be desired (see shots below). If you’re afraid of a voluminous silhouette run and run now. I overheard a couple of ladies in the fitting room talking trash about this skirt and I am totally OK with that! I would much rather keep this one all to myself. I may have joined in…oh yes this skirt is terrible, just terrible. Hey, can I have the last size 6 sitting right behind you? Yeah, I just want…go tell someone else how horrible it is…at the checkout counter. Wishlisted.

Language’s Ruched Pansy Tee ($68) features an intricate burnout pattern that doesn’t photograph very well. You’ll just have to trust me on this one. 5th Ave only had XSs and Ls left so I grabbed the large. Looks like this one runs true to size, which would mean a medium for me. My friend who was with me said it looked like someone swatted an overfilled bug right over my chest. Ha! I can’t help but agree.

This top trails away from the body in front creating a tent-like effect. I envision wearing this tucked into a skirt but wanted to give you the full view for the review. I don’t like the bracelet sleeves. It looks like the shirt is too short on me. Otherwise I like it a lot, smushed bug or not. Wishlisted for sale time.

I didn’t realize Tiny’s Buds & Stripes Top ($78) had the diagonal black stripe on it until I turned around in the dressing room. It was quite the surprise! Not really sure why they didn’t continue the pretty floral silk all the way around but whatever.

I grabbed my true size medium which slipped on perfectly. There is a long braided tie belt in the same pattern as the back. The v is cut perfectly in my opinion. I also liked the length; the shirt stopped at low hip. Thumbs up! For dressier offices I could see this being the shell under your suiting blazer. I think it would also make a great night on the town top. Another one to the wishlist — I’d consider this round a success!

Please put the skirt back PLEASE I beg you! I love your blog and think that you have been 100% spot on in all your reviews….until today. As soon as I saw this skirt in the catalogue, I thought "wow, that's really graphic and overtly sexual, like an O'Keefe." It's so so so wrong.

Ha…well…were you in the 5th Ave fitting rooms around 12 this past weekend? That is pretty much what the complaint was about the skirt.

Ha, I didn't think it was *that* overtly sexual… until I showed the photo to the guys in the office next to mine. Both of them immediately started cracking up and making lewd jokes. For what it's worth, I think that the skirt fits you really well. And who knows? Perhaps yonic imagery is coming into fashion this season.

LOL anonymous – i can see what you're saying…I love the Aniseed Skirt, but I'm not going to lie, when I saw it online, I did think it looked a bit like lady bits ;-)That being said Roxy, I think it looks fantastic on you!

I don't see it sexual at all. I think we need to stop looking for sexual insinuation everywhere. It's the design I guess, I don't think the designer purposely said oh let's make this skirt sexual. It's a very pretty skirt and looks good on you.

hmm weird i don't this see sexual at all, funny that anonymous mentioned O'Keefe, the whole "sexual/graphic" nature of the artist is still up for debate just as this Aniseed skirt is here. I love this skirt, i love the biased stripes, the black and white, and the free-form ribbon/draping.

That's funny, Roxy. I wish it was me today in the fitting room next to you! I'm so far away, sadly. And I totally agree with Angela on the O'Keefe debate. Some people will see the skirt as what I'm sure it was meant to be, just a beautiful item of clothing. I guess I have a dirty mind!

I never see "sexual" things in clothing, so that's why it always surprises me when others point it out. Sure, I guess if that's where your mind goes, then it goes there. For me, it didn't (and it still doesn't) and I really like it on you!

Oh I just love that skirt on you! Glad to hear it suits curves. Thank you for the reviews!

sexual? I thought Anon @ 6:52 was joking till I read the other comments. Wow…..and here I thought it was just a skirt. However, for some reason I didn't like it and didn't see why everyone was crazy about it. Guess I now know why. Hmmmm

Hey Roxy. Love the blog.. thank you for everything! I keep meaning to ask you. Which out of the NY stores do you like the best? ive never been to Rockefeller. But between soho and 5th ave., which do you think has more new arrivals and which has better sale selection in your opnion. Thanks

  12. January 13, 2010 / 3:25 am

Hi Anon, 5th Ave gets new arrivals fastest but Soho has the better sale section (and they have shoes!). Can't say I prefer one over the other.

Hi Roxy,I love your blog! I stumbled on it a few weeks ago and I am now a daily reader. Thank you for posting all the wonderful reviews and sales updates!! I was in my local Anthro store today and left with the Aniseed skirt. It is a great and unique piece. It looks great on you too. I just wanted to let fellow readers know that the size 0 in this skirt is now hard to find. The store called the catalog and they were sold out, although it still shows available on line. I left with the size 2 and they are trying to locate a 0 somewhere in the country. Enjoy the birthday shopping 🙂

I also did not see this item as sexual, it is a skirt. After the review I'm anxious to try it on and see if I have as much success with it.

This discussion reminds me of a fashion forum I came across recently. There seemed to a large number of finding "lady bits" in clothing posts and it freaked me out lol.Like Chloe said, my mind doesn't go there, so I think the Aniseed skirt is adorable!

I love everything you tried on. I'm not sure where the 'sexual' part comes from-I guess I just don't see it that way. I think the skirt is so pretty on you…I just purchased the Ruched Pansy Tee and it's such a comfortable top (the material is a little thin-I would have to wear a tank underneath) with just skinny jeans and brown boots..I'm all set to go!…the stripes on the back of the Buds and Stripes Tee is a nice surprise-it'll be on my wish list as well. Thanks Roxy!

I think you look great in the Aniseed Skirt and had been eyeballing it myself – but thanks to your review, I think I'll need to hunt it down and try it on first (I'm 5'2" and not curvy so it may seem like I'm wearing a striped paper lantern). The same pieces don't work for everyone, but that's why there's so many choices out there.

I love that speckled ink dress on you! Very pretty!

i agree!! it looks great on you, not so great on the model. it really does suit curves. i love it on you, and i hope it works on me too! i want to try it now that i saw it on you. i am also curvy. when i first saw it on the model, i thought that for sure it would suit only girls who were straight body types, not curvy. i'm glad i was wrong. thanks for the review!!
