Reviews: Gather Together Clutch & Geology Clutch

Due to popular demand, I wanted to run quick reviews for both the Gather Together Clutch (now $80) and the Geology Clutch (now $100). If you were expecting clothing reviews, sorry, they’ll be back in the morning!

Let’s start with the Gather Together Clutch (now $80). Note my shots are a little washed out by the my iPhone, the product shot online is true to color. It’s not a bright or rich pink; it’s more of a washed out tone. The grey I am not sure about yet as I just ordered it today. The strap is also pretty short. This is a shoulder bag that will hang just above your elbow. The strap is not adjustable.

During the 25% off bags promotion a few weeks ago, I was initially leaning towards this bag. I love the foldover styling and the magnetic closure. This bag goes from being about the size of a tissue box to opening like a sofa bed. There are tons of compartments, pockets and sleeves within.

The outer leather is very nicely done, though I noticed marks and scuffs already appearing on the store bags. Of course this will happen to the bag over its lifetime but it was sad to see marks after just gentle usage. This is one thing to watch out for.

The one thing I am concerned about is how much this bag can actually hold. It has lots of pockets, yes, but if you carry too much makeup/coinage/whatever it will get bulky very quickly. I see this not as an everyday bag but more of a bag to use when I don’t have much to carry. Below is a picture of the grey version.

Love it! It’s worth sale price to me, which is why I ordered the grey today. I love the color of the pink but already own two small pink bags. I’m never afraid to add more grey/brown/black.

The Geology Clutch (now $100) ended up winning my cash during the bag promotion a few weeks ago. First, I LOVE the golden mustard yellow, which is accurately shown in the product shot but way too washed out in the catalogue shot. The pebbled effect of the leather is awesome and the lighter contrast stitching is well-done. This bag is heavier and feels more significant than the Gather Together Clutch.

The top flap of the purse contains a mirror. Love that! The toggle closure on mine has been loose and the key will turn on its own. Annoying but I’m told this is fixable. Note that the strap on this bag is adjustable. You can either make it long to wear at your waist, short to wear as a shoulder bag, or remove it altogether to use this bag as a large clutch. I like the versatility. Like on the Gather Together Clutch, the woven strap is well-made.

There’s only one zip pocked inside this bag but there are a few compartments, including one larger one for your phone. This purse came with a dust bag, which I did not see included with the Gather Together Clutch. There were no markings on my Geology Clutch when I bought it and it’s held up well so far. Even in one unfortunate rain storm I got caught in.

Here’s a closeup of the strap. While I like both bags a lot, the Geology Clutch is the clear winner to me. If you have to choose one or the other I’d choose this over the Gather Together Clutch. Or, if you’re like me, you find some way to own them both. You win again Anthro!!

Update: this post was updated on 2/5/2011 to add a photo of the grey Gather Together Clutch.
