I think maybe Anthropologie doesn’t know the meaning of ‘sweater.’
The Franja Pullover ($88) and more, reviewed.

Hunting for sweaters despite the weather? You better believe it. Spring in New York City can mean anything from 50s to 80s, especially these days. Not quite as crazy as the May snowstorms I used to get in college in Colorado, but still…

Verona Midi Pullover ($78) by Moth, size down
Style #: 4114339210691; blue motif (049)
★★★☆☆

Note: For sizing reference I am 34-29-38, size 6/M in sweaters, 34D. I am 5’8″.

I had to triple check my notes on the Verona Midi Pullover ($78) to see which size I’d tried on and to verify the color. Anthropologie calls this short-sleeve ruffle-hem sweater ‘blue motif’ to which I say what what?!? Perhaps blur motif. Or brown motif. I see no blue! I love the wider scoopneck and I adore nearly everything ruffle so of course this top was calling to me. I surrendered.

Anyway, this top is by Moth and it’s cotton that’s sadly been mutilated with acrylic and polyamide and good lord I’ve never even heard of polyamide! It sounds like the tragic heroine of some Greek myth. But who cares about any of that? All you really need to know is that this sweater tee runs huge. Gigantic. Gigundo! I’m in a small for the photos above, already one size down from my usual medium, and yet it is still huge on me. So roomy through the chest and shoulders that I look pregnant…which I am not.

This sweater tee has potential — I like how on the model her waist is somewhat defined by the ruffle hem, which does come up a bit high even on short-torso me. I think the solution here would be to try a size XS. That of course means you true size XS’s are SOL and perhaps you size smalls too. Bummer. For me, pass for now.

Townsend Pullover ($98) by Sparrow, TTS

The open-knit Townsend Pullover ($98) is the kind of top I’d love in October, yet confuses me in May. The main torso has mixed stripes of less open knit interspersed with thicker more open knit. The sleeves have a gorgeous damask-style design and a slight batwing feel. I like the simple scoopneck. It’s a heavy sweater to wear. I could feel it on, does that make sense? It wasn’t weighty in warmth, it was weighty in literal weight. Anthro says this sweater is cotton online but I’m very dubious…it felt acrylic to me.

I am in my usual size medium which fit nicely. The sweater has a slightly longer back tail though it’s barely noticeable unless you’re looking at me from the side. The length is good, hitting high hip in front and mid-butt in back. The sleeves hit in my elbow crook. The torso is somewhat boxy but did follow my body’s natural shape enough to nip in at the waist. Plus! The sleeves feel overwhelming to me.

I can’t imagine wearing anything black at the moment after the endless winter we had in NYC. Once I’m into it again this could be a winner! For now, wishlisted.

Franja Pullover ($88) by Akemi + Kim, TTS

Anthro’s product description helpfully notes that the Franja Pullover ($88) is sheer. They might have wanted to add short to those notes! How slouchy do the models have to be that this sweater somehow hits them below the natural waist, yet on shorter and short torso me the sweater doesn’t even clear my belly button? Granted I wouldn’t suggest wearing the pullover over a long-sleeve top as I have, but it was the only layering option I had in the fitting room.

This sweater is cotton and polyester. The fringe is adorable and I love the pattern. A wide scoopneck is beautiful for framing collarbones. I could easily see some festival goer dancing like they mean it in this thing. The long sleeves are an interesting choice, one that suddenly has me picturing evening campfires on the beach. I’m in my usual size medium here. It felt awfully short but it’s pretty roomy. I doubt sizing up would help much for length. The sleeves were just right so I would advise against sizing down.

Could I wear this? Sure. Would I wear it? A different question altogether. While I ponder, back to the rack.

Ruffled Citrus Pullover ($88) by Sunday in Brooklyn, size down

It’s a little boxier than I’d hoped and I may have my Anthro Goggles on, but I found the Ruffled Citrus Pullover ($88) quite cute! It has to be the flowers peeking out of the bottom. And the peachy color. (It’s way, way brighter in real life.) OK, so doesn’t have much shape through the body. And alright, it’s weirdly sheer despite a nubby texture. The bracelet sleeves, sweatshirt feel and did I mention the flowers?!? I LOVE FLOWERS.

This top runs huge, even bigger than the Verona Midi Pullover ($78) at the top of the post. I’m in a small here and definitely need a x-small. In reality I’m a medium. In Anthroland, I’m a teeny mouse among…bigger mice? I think this top would look excellent paired with shorts or even a fun, flirty, shorter skirt. When do I ever say that?!

If I’ve got the goggles on let me know…although it will be hard to dissuade me. I am after all nothing if not very stubborn.

Emerson Pullover (now $50) by Champagne & Strawberry, size down
Style #: 30862361; nude (013)
★★★★☆

Oh hey, pretty sweater! I found the Emerson Pullover (now $50)  while it was still full price and thought, hmm, wish this was on sale. Then last Tuesday my wish came true! This sweater is friggin adorable and I’m surprised I haven’t seen it on every TV show ever made, since that seems to happen with the more feminine Anthro pieces I like. This sweater has marled knit overlayed with a triangular lace panel and petal-shaped lace along the sleeve and bottom hemlines. So cute! The neckline is a cute peachy-nude color.

I found this sweater to run large. (Are we sensing a pattern yet?) I’m in a small for the hphotos above which hugged my body perfectly. It’s just a little shorter than I’d like, highlighting the outward curve of my upper thighs instead of concealing them like perfect-length tops do. But it’s a quibble! Overall this sweater is lovely, although it does reveal bra straps at the shoulders. One thing to knock.

On sale this top comes home to me. In my cart!

Splitback Pullover ($98) by Moth, size down
Style #: 4113265400698; cream (012)
★★★☆☆

Since it’s crazy to wear a cape unless you are: 1 – an old-school vampire; 2 – a vigilante superhero or 3 – an untouchable fashionista who never smiles, I have to settle for the next best thing: the Splitback Pullover ($98). This sweater has a chiffon panel in the back that floats back delightfully as you walk, causing one of my coworkers to ask whether I had a fan hiding somewhere to create that effect. This is the kind of top I like to see at Anthropologie — so long as it’s not every top!

The sweater is somewhat thin and the sleeves are a little tight. But I still felt better in a small than my usual medium — the medium was boxy and loose through the chest and waist which caused a frumpy look. The sweater is cotton and nylon and has a pretty scoopneck. I dig it! It’s the perfect office sweater. I’ve been wearing it over AG’s Farrah Skinnies in black with a long white blouse (an old Helmut Lang aquisition) and black flats. It looks positively divine.

What do you think of these sweaters? Still more to come!
