Reviews: Firehouse Cardigan, Kirklees Sweatercoat, Hues Ascending Cardigan, Oxer Jacket, Stitch-by-Stitch Sweatercoat

With highs of 85 degrees it’s getting downright chilly in NYC so I am ready for the sweatercoats! And coats. And sweaters. Or not.

As I assemble my list of fall/winter wants, Rag and Bone’s incomparable Leigh Jacket ($475) has been at the top of my list. I don’t need another coat but if I do invest a wool military coat seems like a good way to go. Then I strolled into the Soho Anthropologie and found this devilish delight waiting for me and all bets were off.

This coat from Tabitha isn’t on the website yet. It is $158. The color is perfect and the wool material is exactly what I pictured in a military coat. (And the scratchiness of it matches my grandfather’s WWII blanket well, a coincidental touch I’m sure but nice nonetheless). The buttons are another smart detail as is the defined waist. The inside is lined and the large pockets will easily hold my gloves and keys in the winter. Update 8/26: It’s online now. It’s called the Oxer Jacket.

I tried on a 10, which was loose in the upper portion but tight across the hips. I would purchase a 12. While I like this jacket quite a bit I am unsure about the ruffle. It’s inadequate to me. If you’re going to do a ruffle on a military jacket it has to be big in my mind to introduce any feminine qualities. Else, I’d rather the coat didn’t have one at all. I think a more three-dimensional ruffle that continued higher onto the coat would have satisfied me. I’m left to ponder this one for now.

Though outside of my normal personal style, I’ve been dying to see the Kirklees Sweater Coat ($148) in person. Chelsea Market came through for me. I had already set my mind on loving this coat so it was going to take a lot to sway me. Luckily, it worked out well.

The shots above are the medium which I found to be too large. I’d size down to a small in this coat. Guinevere outdid themselves with softish merino wool, a beautiful portrait collar and a nipped waist. The length is great and I felt comfortable the moment I put this coat on. I would belt this coat to polish off my outfit before heading out the door. Wishlisted!

I found another sweatercoat nearby that I decided to try on for kicks. This one is from Sleeping on Snow, is priced $148 and has not appeared on the website yet. The color is black base with purple, white and grey stitching and a button placket. There are two side pockets and an oversized sailor collar. Update 8/26: this coat is now online and is called the Stitch-By-Stitch Sweatercoat ($148).

I love this style of long sweater! My usual size medium fit well and I immediately felt snuggly warm. This sweater would be perfect over a dress with tights and boots. And maybe a cute hat. Hmm, the possibilities are already populating in my head. Once this one debuts online it will be wishlisted!

I found myself making a beeline to Sparrow’s green Hues Ascending Cardigan ($118). This cardigan reminds of the Hues Unfolding Cardi in both name and material. It’s a finer knit sweater that feels slightly slippery to the touch. I loved the contrasting panels of color. I tried on the small.

Unfortunately once on those panels became what I didn’t like. Though the v-neck was just perfect and hit me exactly as I wanted, the panels flared out across my hips and made me feel wide. I wondered if a medium would cure this issue but it didn’t, and neither did a large. The style just isn’t going to work on me. Sadness. Back to the rack.

Speaking of cardigans that didn’t work, Sparrow’s Firehouse Cardigan ($98) went from looking promising on the display table to looking silly on me. My usual size medium was clearly a mistake but I’m not sure a large would have fared any better. I think the red vertical stripes and I were destined for discourse.

And this cardigan has my favorite trait — sheerness! The center chiffon panel is unlined because nothing says tasteful like a free look down the center of your cardigan. At this point it’s almost comical. Cami required. Back to the rack.
