Playing the Sale guessing game

Last week’s sale was quite enjoyable for me. I was able to pick up several items I’d been waiting (and waiting and waiting) to see marked down. I was especially excited to grab the Air Mail Skirt — thanks ladies for putting it on hold for me! Anthropologie won too because I also splurged on a few new items in addition to the markdowns. I haven’t heard a peep about sale this week but a friendly SA had told me there’d be markdowns every week in June…so perhaps it’s home this week? Or maybe a few clothing markdowns will sneak in.

This post is no guarantee that any of these items will actually be on sale come tomorrow. What are you hoping to see? What do you think will/won’t go on sale?

Update 11:03 PM – Kim found a few markdowns in Chicago. Her update is here.

It's hard to imagine another sale tomorrow, but then again, I was surprised last Tuesday, so you never know. If there is a sale, I've got my fingers crossed for these:Snowmelt Cardi (I must have it in purple!)Blooming Bouquet Cardi Field Game Cardi (although I fear that one will NEVER go on sale)Sunday Supper ShirtDaring Dart BlouseBeda Dress

I'm hoping to take a sale break this week like last week. Oh btw the Warm Season Romper from the sale before last week worked out great, I love it! First romper I wore and love since I was probably 12 years old lol.

  3. June 7, 2010 / 8:53 pm

Lauren S. – I want the Snowmelt in purple!!Stephanie – that's great the romper worked. 🙂 I just wore my Helmut Lang romper from last year for the first time. And I just ordered one on super sale from the Limited. Yes, I loves me a good romper.

I need a break from the sale but am secretly doing a dance for the Shibori Silk Dress

  5. June 7, 2010 / 8:57 pm

Lauren S.–I'm crossing my fingers with you for the Field Game cardi and the Sunday Supper Shirt! 🙂 Would be nice if these also got marked down:Abuzz cardi (since I just ordered one at full price!)Two Wheeler ShirtdressPicture Frame BlouseKeep It Simple Tunic (hasn't been out that long, but maybe? please?):)

Ugh, I really hope there's no sale. And I really hope there is one, too, because I would pull the trigger on the two wheeler shirtdress. Stop the madness!

  7. June 7, 2010 / 9:01 pm

I am torn between wanting the Picture Frame blouse to go on sale and begging it not to for the sake of my budget! I found my sale Two-Paths Trench so I've already been bad!

  8. June 7, 2010 / 9:06 pm

Come the flip on aniseed skirt (not that I can afford you. Which means you'll be marked down this week)

  9. June 7, 2010 / 9:11 pm

erinaomi, if the Picture Frame Blouse goes on sale, you must get it. I have it and love it. Just call me Lauren Enabler :)Also, wanted to add that the Percussive Cardi is over-due for a markdown. I've been waiting for that one for a while as well. And Roxy, I tried on the Snowmelt in purple ages ago and fell in love. I know the regular price is pretty low by Anthro standards, but I've waited so long for a sale I just can't bring myself to buy it fp. I'm also pretty hopeful this one is next in line for a markdown because my store just got a huge re-stock and sometimes when that happens (as it just did two weeks ago with the Shimmering Pin-Up Cardi) it can signal that they're about to slash the price.

  10. June 7, 2010 / 9:24 pm

I'd love to see the liquid breeze tank go on sale, that one has been around for as long as the caballo falls dress!

I'm hoping the Illuminated Way blouse goes on sale. I bought the Filtered Rays Blouse last week when it went on sale, and it's a big fail. Looks like mummy bandages on me, and the hook/eye closures gap even though it's not too tight. Bleck. It was an either or thing for me with those two blouses, so back goes Filtered Rays and I'm snatching up Illuminated Way as soon as it goes on sale.

  13. June 7, 2010 / 9:26 pm

I could use a sale break, but i'd probably pull the trigger on the Rushing Ruffles dress if it hit sale…also hoping (sort of)for the Botanical Stroll dress to get marked down. I tried it on and absolutely adored it, but couldn't bring myself to pay $168.00. Still, I'm tempted to pay full price just so I don't miss out.

I must have the aniseed skirt!

Hey Roxy, I was surprised to hear that the SA mentioned a sale this week, the SA I spoke to mentioned that there wouldn't be a sale until after the 15th when they're finished with their inventory. Perhaps it depends on the store?

Kind of OT but does anyone know if stores are supposed to charge shipping on sale items? I have ordered tons of stuff from stores across the country if there is no stock online or if my local stores do not have them and never been charged shipping (whether it was on sale or not). This past Wednesday I ordered a sale item and was charged shipping and when I talked to the store, they said that the policy is to charge shipping on ALL sale items (whether ordered over the phone or by another store) but that stores don't enforce it. Has anyone heard this? Whenever I've talked to CS to find a store with a sale item, they have always mentioned that shipping would be waived. If the policy is to charge for sale items sent from stores, then fine, but I find it hard to believe that out of the probably 20+ store I've ordered from that only ONE has ever enforced it.

Lauren – which store was it that charged shipping?

  25. June 7, 2010 / 11:48 pm

Ava — Regarding the Filtered Rays blouse. Which size did you order. I was going to say that, based on my experience with the blouse, I wouldn't be surprised to see it come back into stock from all the returns. Sure enough, I'm showing XS and S as in stock on the site (via my wish list), and I'm returning a L. I'd keep an eye out and see if your size comes in.

Roxy – it was Greensboro, NC.

LAUREN- stores are supposed to charge shipping. most stores are nice enough to waive the shipping charge unless it's a home/heavy item or you need the item sooner than regular delivery. the only time you can ever be GAURANTEED free shipping is if you're local store is having to call customer service and order you an item that they are currently out of stock in at that particular time.

  28. June 7, 2010 / 11:59 pm

Lauren and Roxy- the same thing happened to me with the ATL store. I just ordered something last week that was on sale, and they charged me for shipping. It was really surprising b/c I've ordered sale items from all over the country and have never been charged. The SA on the phone told me that b/c this particular store is pretty big and processes a lot of charge/send orders, it's economically important for them to charge for shipping. The kicker is that I've bought sale items from that store before and they didn't charge me shipping. Am I being picky here or should I dispute the shipping charge, especially since CS always tells me I shouldn't charged if my local store doesn't carry the item.

  29. June 8, 2010 / 12:06 am

I need the field game cardi to go on sale! A girl can hope, right? 😉

  30. June 8, 2010 / 12:07 am

Anon @ 7:58 – thanks for the info. The strange thing is that I was specifically told that even if I have my local store call on my behalf because they are out of them item, that I still would be charged. Like I said if that's the policy, then that's fine, but then CS needs to stop telling me (and apparently others) that shipping would be waived regardless of whether the item is on sale or FP.Dea – I did tell them that I would have gotten free shipping on sale items had the website not been out-of-stock since I have an Anthro card, so they said they would see what they could do about refunding me the shipping but I don't know what's going to happen at this point. I also wrote to CS about it to see if they can help at all (and because they are the ones who told me shipping would be waived). It is interesting that you were told you were charged shipping because of the high volume of charge sends they do and I was told because it's standard policy…

Can someone explain the price adjustment policy? I know the time limit is 14 days, with the day of purchase counted as day one, but some old comments made me think I'm missing some nuances. If you buy an item at full price and it goes on sale, you can get an adjustment, correct? If you purchase an item that is already on sale, and it's marked down again, can you still get a price adjustment? This last situation probably never happens, but if you buy something and it's marked down twice within 14 days, which price adjustment do you receive if you wait until the fourteenth day to get an adjustment? I always assumed it's best to wait the full 14 days to request an adjustment in case such a situation arises. Thanks!

I was also charged shipping once on an item. I don't remember the exact store but it was somewhere in the Northeast.Does anyone know how sales tax is supposed to be calculated for charge sends? I've had stores charge their normal tax rate, adjust the tax to my state tax rate, and not charge tax at all.

  33. Anonymous
    June 8, 2010 / 12:20 am

ANON @ 8:14- when doing a charge-send, all stores have a binder that lists the average tax rate of each state. you should always be charged the amount of the average tax rate for a charge-send. sometimes employees are not too familiar with the computer system in which you have to manually change the tax, and I suppose they forget. or, they simply make a mistake and forget.

Lauren,I had a charge send done from Seattle, and printed on the receipt is a little line that says "Shipping charge = 0.00 Ground (<100 miles)", meaning that if it's more than 100 miles away, they won't charge shipping – or at least they have the option not to. Anon @8:14, I believe they are supposed to charge tax based on where they are shipping the item.

  37. June 8, 2010 / 12:32 am

Tax is supposed to be charged to the state to which the item is being delivered. My problem is that while I was only charged shipping once, I seem to get charged sales tax of 7% for NJ, where in NJ, clothes are exempt. My local store said if I bring in the reciept they will do the refund. I'm making myself remember to explain this the next time I call a store myself.I have been in customer service many years and especially in retail with the high turnover in the stores, it is hard to keep everyone on the same page with some topics. I do find it strange that one store would charge shipping on all orders and view it as a money maker.I did recently have a store in AL charge me for an item and when I didn't get it in a week (yes they charged me sales tax) I called for the tracking # and was told after an hour or so that it was lost. Graciously they got another store in NC to send me the item Next Day delivery. At the end of the day consistency would be nice, but where humans are involved…

  38. June 8, 2010 / 12:46 am

anon @ 8:08You can still get a price adjustment if you bought something that's on sale and got a 2nd cut within 14 days. You don't have to wait full 14 days. I never did.hope that makes sense.

  39. June 8, 2010 / 12:49 am

I got charge shipping of $6.95 ( i think) from SF area store when I called the store for the budding t-strap when it went on sale.

Just want to say that I went into my local anthro in the U District of Seattle… they have a big sale section at the front of the store, however, most were things I had tried on at full price and didn't want to revisit. I ended up buying the perilla dress, because when I pointed out the unraveling flowers to an SA, she offered me 35% off! Just a tip for anyone interest in this dress… every single one has the problem with the unraveling flowers. I am anthro grounded until my birthday in July.

I would be *thrilled* if the field game cardigan went on sale this week… I finally gave in and picked it up last week (even though it is absolutely not sweater season in AZ, every single office building is kept at -5 degrees, I swear). The stores (at least mine) just got it in a new color, though, so I don't think it's going anywhere just yet.

LaurenThe same thing happened to me when I did a chargesend with the Greensboro, NC store. I was buying a Cartography cardigan and they were giving me such a hard time insisting that regardless of anything I have heard of that I would still be charged. They weer also the same store that put me on hold for a long time. It was giving me such a headache that I said that I would call another store instead and that's when the SA said she'd talk to her manager. Needless to say I am never going to do a charge-send with that store ever again.

PSA: Ladies, the super-adorable Sweetheart Oxfords (almost sold-out online, down to $50 from $200) are still available in some stores in various colorways (coral, blue, grey). Except the last pair of blue 7's, because I snagged those :). Call CS if you're interested!

  47. June 8, 2010 / 2:09 am

Anon @ 9:39 – did they tell you they were going to charge you shipping before you got off the phone with them? I had a good experience when I ordered (and was not told anything about shipping) but after this experience, I will definitely not be buying anything from that store ever again. JanAlyssa – I live in PA so I'm definitely more than 100 miles from NC. I've done charge sends from a store 15-20 miles from me (I was hopping on a flight the next morning and couldn't pick up the purchase) and I wasn't charged shipping. As for taxes… PA doesn't charge sales tax on clothing but out of state Anthro's have charged me which is a whole different annoyance.

  48. June 8, 2010 / 2:16 am

I would agree that the charge-send shipping fee is frustrating. I buy a belt on sale at one store in NC, they happily waive shipping without me even asking. I buy a full price item at a different store in NC, they tack on shipping without telling me. Darn Circle the Globe skirt sold out the night before online and my shop didn't have it either. My store offered to do a charge send but said it would take 3 days. I couldn't chance waiting 3 days for them to get around to it and meanwhile the skirt selling out. If shipping is complimentary online I think they should extend that courtesy to the stores too. Boo. I guess if there was some continuity I wouldn't be bothered by it, but as Bronzi said I imagine it is tough with high turnover in retail.Oh, and Kristina well done getting 35% off for damage! I only manage 10%, so bravo to you!

  49. June 8, 2010 / 2:18 am

Lauren,That's lame! I work for a large women's retailer, and there are definitely a lot of nitpicky details about charge sends and such, but we try to be consistent across the board, and we have way more stores than Anthro. It would be useful if Anthro had a consistent policy. I hope CS answers your email and helps you out – and maybe throws you a coupon for your trouble. I know that's what our store would do, but Anthro isn't much for coupons 🙁

  50. June 8, 2010 / 2:22 am

  51. June 8, 2010 / 2:27 am

Yay! I've been waiting for the Climbing Cowlneck to go on sale for *months.* Somehow couldn't justify to myself that $50 was a good price for a tissue tee.

Thanks Maureen! So here's an ethical question: I'd bought one of the soon-to-be-on-sale items just about three weeks ago hoping for a price adjustment, but hadn't gotten around to returning it at the store yet. Now that it's going on sale tomorrow, would it be ethical to return it to the store and rebuy it online at the sale price? On the JCA blog, this seems to be fairly common, returning and rebuying an (unworn) item. Would much appreciate opinions — TIA!

anon @10:42. I don't think there is anything wrong with it as long as you have NOT worn the item, I think you should be able to return it and get a new one for the sale price. Personally, I would feel really bad if i had an unworn item in my closet and it went on sale. I wouldn't intentionally keep something for so long though but it has happenned to me before just because I do but a LOT of things from anthro, and if I dont come around to wearing some things, I suely am not going to pay full price for it if it can be had on sale. But that is just my 2 cents on this.S. K.

Thanks SK and roxy for your thoughts on returns! It's definitely a dilemma, and I can see people having very different opinions. I think it hurts a bit more because I looked at my receipts and realized I'm just barely out of the PA period (turns out my purchase was two weeks ago yesterday). Well, since I'd already decided that the item wasn't worth full price to me, I'm going to go and return it (yes, still NWT). I see it's available online in a color that my store didn't have, so maybe I'll get that instead.Oh well, Anthro will get my money in any case. It looks like there's some stuff I've been coveting going on sale — and it seems that even if the sale is small, there are some highly desired items to keep everyone happy. Happy shopping!

Ladies, for the first time ever I was charged shipping on a full price item (circle the globe skirt) from the Houston store. The SA told me they were required to charge a flat shipping rate of $7. When I complained and told her I would not buy the skirt, she talked to a mgr. and waived it. That was my first and last time ordering from that store.

  74. June 8, 2010 / 5:25 am

@NikkiI don't think it's a goof but is actually a (very slightly) different colorway. I own the dark grey and the grey that's listed is definitely lighter, at least judging from the stock photo. I also remember seeing this particular cardi restocked in my local store a few days after I purchased my dark grey off the "almost gone" rack. At first I thought they just tricked me into buying the last grey cardi at the time :p, but upon 2nd glance it did look like it was a different shade

@ Nikki: To my eyes, the regular "grey" actually seems more of a light bluish-gray color, unlike the pure gray of the dark gray colorway online. A lot of reviewers seemed to think so as well. I actually wouldn't have called it gray at all from seeing it in the store, to tell the truth…

    # Climbing Cowlneck# style #013114 $29.95 (was $48.00)

  103. June 8, 2010 / 7:24 am

okay, did anybody else notice they've renamed the Breezy Ride Cardi to the Breezy Polkas Cardi? that's kind of weird. Of course, I've seen them change a lot of names recently. The Cirrus Streaks Tee became the Faint Lines tee, and the Feline Frenzy Blouse became the Raccoon Rumpus Blouse (I guess when they figured out the print was raccoons and not cats), and the New York, New York Dress was always on my wishlist as the Amsterdam Dress, because I wishlisted it the day it showed up online.

  104. June 8, 2010 / 7:26 am

Mini-sale post is up!elise – I have noticed and it drives me crazy when they do it. Your wishlist will still work with the old product name though.

  105. June 8, 2010 / 7:26 am

Finally got the Climbing Cowlneck in pink! Too bad it isn't $19.95, but $29.95 ain't too shabby.Elise, did you notice that only the lilac colorway is on sale for the Diamond Light Tank? It's popping up as FP in my cart for the other two colors.

  106. June 8, 2010 / 7:30 am

LOL, I guess I didn't notice because the lilac was what I had wishlisted. That's weird too, though, right? It's brand new, and only one color is on sale? Why can't they put the old color of the Beda Dress on sale? WHYYY??(sale adrenaline making me kinda hyper)

  107. June 8, 2010 / 7:30 am

Diana – that's so strange about the Diamond Light Tank – all three colors were on sale in my store. Maybe call CS if you want the sale price.

Kim, you're so lucky that your store always faithfully marks things down the night before. How awesome to have a preview, to know what you're looking at and how you'll have to budget.Roxy, good to know about the product naming thing… I can't keep up with them all. Some of them are obvious, like the Raccoon Rumpus Blouse, but why change the name of the Breezy Ride Cardi? or the Cirrus Streaks Tank? I liked those fine the way they were. I'm kind of glad that they're grandfathered to the original names on my list. 🙂

Mini update – CS wrote back to me, actually a store operations director, and told me that the store was misinformed and if I could provide them with the store name they would have the district manager call them to clear up the policy and to get my refund. I wrote back thanking them and also informed them that the CS received by at least one other person cost that store a sale so hopefully that location gets it together now.

Lauren,I was the Anon person who dealt with the Greensboro, NC store. I have not received my cardigan in the mail yet so I'm not sure if I was charged for shipping. The SA on the phone did assure me the manager said she would waive shipping. However, initially the SA was giving me a really hard time. I told them that I live far away from an Anthro store and that when an item sells out online usually you get free shipping. She then asked me if I had an Anthro card. I said that I did and she relayed that message to the manager to which the manager replied "We don't give free shipping for Anthro cards" (completely disregarding all of the things I told her). The SA also gave me an attitude and acted as if she had ever heard of such a thing as free shipping via charge sends. It's only when I told them I no longer wanted the item they were willing to "work" with me. She wasn't apologetic for being rude to me. It was a frustrating conversation to say the least.

Just in case anyone's looking, the Milwakee anthro had all the fresh cuts in many sizes and colors and also, the cartography cardi in an xs! (thought someone in the community may be on the hunt for it!)Happy hunting =)
