Reviews: Hinterland Dress, Fresh Current Dress, Undercurrent Dress, June July August Dress, Glazed Fruit Dress

Anthropologie caters to curves pretty well. Every once in awhile they really hit it out of the park, and that was the case with the Hinterland Dress ($138, already sold out online, style #18321604). I don’t know who the fit model Rebekah Maysles used was but please Anthro use her for everything!

My usual size 6 was very form fitting but also oh so flattering. It hugged every curve just right and fit over my hips comfortably without making me look wide. Hey — there’s an hourglass in there! If only every dress fit so wonderfully. The price is also quite fair for an Anthro collaboration. I wish I had some event that justified purchasing this dress. I might just grab it anyway, since dresses that fit this well don’t come along very often.

Girls from Savoy’s Fresh Currents Dress ($158) has a wonderful spring floral print and an odd bit of bustle ruffle in the back. I was drawn to the neckline and the warm mix of greens and blues. There are thick ribbon straps which gets points from me. The length was also very nice on my 5’8″ frame. My usual size 6 was a loose fit everywhere but the chest. I wasn’t really happy with the silhouette though. The ruffle that cuts diagonally across the back is odd and adds a lot of poof.

I decided to send this one back to the rack for now, to be reconsidered upon sale time.

My expectations were high for Moulinette Soeurs’ Undercurrent Dress ($148). Recently I have needed to size up in this brand so I grabbed an 8. It was a bit loose in the dress itself but the lining was tight. This keeps happening to me with this particular brand — what gives??

I love the top portion of this dress. It has faux-wrap styling with good coverage. I like the floral adornments on the hip. I wasn’t as crazy about the skirt, with it’s tulip shape and frumpy middle. I can see this dress working well for work but it’s more likely to find a home in my closet on sale.

This Nell Couture dress is the June, July, August Dress ($148). It comes in two vibrant patterns. I tried both on and will have the purple motif in an upcoming post. I wasn’t really able to gauge the fit on the rack so I grabbed a medium. It was too big though — I’d buy in a small.

The print on this dress is beautiful feather. Ironically the dress isn’t really light as one; it’s more midweight. But what really made this dress a HELL NO was the smell. Oh my god it was terrible. It smelled like a mixture of dye and gasoline that was almost rancid. I was holding my breath the entire time I had it on. The dress was the same way at a couple of other Anthropologies I went to. Whatever they used to dye this dress was horrid. Back to the rack.

The last dress I tried was Ek Jam Factory’s Glazed Fruit Dress ($228). I adored this one! It’s got a straight shapelessness to it that makes it easy and fun and I love the stripes along the bottom portion. The neckline is also beautiful with what looks like sliced fruit dotted by a pretty blue bead.

I grabbed a medium and it fit well. I would not size down to a small for fear it would be shorter on me. I think it would be fun to throw a nice wide belt on in a bold color over this frock and be summer-ready. Wishlisted for sale!

I have 9 more dress reviews coming up between tonight and tomorrow. I love Anthropologie dress season!

I already told you this on Twitter, but that Hinterland dress is MADE for you. Seriously, you have to buy it! It would be perfect to wear to a wedding or party even if you don't have something this summer. I don't think it will go out of style. Hi, I am overly invested in you getting that dress.

You need to go up a size in the Hinterland dress. You shouldn't be able to see the outline of your underwear in the front.

Roxy — You look amazing in the Hinterland Dress & I would say run back and buy that dress if you haven't already !! Thanks for your wonderful blog!!

Gah I am desperately in love with the Hinterland dress on you. I really want to try it on and see if it can work similar dress dreaminess on my figure. Does it give or stretch at all? I don't know if I would need a 10 in it.

  9. May 25, 2010 / 7:07 pm

Jesspgh – it has very little give to it, though that's part of the appeal to me. 🙂

  10. May 25, 2010 / 7:27 pm

Oh, WOW! I second all the comments about the Hinterland dress (except for Anon's ridiculous comment, of course). It is stunning on you!! If it looked that good on me, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat. I also LOVED the Girls from Savoy dress on you! Some beautiful dresses this year… what's a girl to do? I want them all.

  11. May 25, 2010 / 7:33 pm

I too love Anthropologie dress season! I am going to be anthro-ed out in my engagement photoshoot, I can't wait! The Hinterland dress looks fab on you and I really like the glazed fruit dress–very cute for summer, esp with a belt!

What shoes are you wearing in your post? I love them!I agree with everyone's comments re the Hinterland dress. It is a shame that the June, July, August dress stunk (literally). That one also looked great on you.

  13. May 25, 2010 / 7:43 pm

Victoria – those are the White Sands Wedges I mentioned on last week's shoes/accessories sale post. They're so wonderful, I'm very happy with the purchase.

  14. May 25, 2010 / 7:48 pm

It flatters your curves perfectly and basically looks like it was made for you. and get the size that's in the pic, it looks perfect!

Already enough posts about it, but I had to say – the Hinterland Dress is MADE. FOR. YOU. I've never seen anything look better on you – top, middle, bottom. Gorgeous!!! Own it!!

  18. May 25, 2010 / 8:15 pm

The Hinterland dress looks amazing on you. Of all the bloggers I've seen with the Hinterland dress, you wear it best. I was beginning to wonder if it was going to fit any body type since the all bloggers were saying that the fit was off.

  19. May 25, 2010 / 8:16 pm

You have to buy the Hinterland dress- wowsa!

Wow the Hinterland dress looks amazing on you! I second everyone's comments that you need to buy this dress.

  24. May 25, 2010 / 8:40 pm

Roxy–The Hinterland dress looks wonderful on you! Re: the anonymous post at 2:27, it may be worth trying the next size up just to be positive you're wearing the right size. I always feel like it's easier to tell when something's too big than when it's too small (especially with pencil-skirt shapes). Maybe that's just me, though.

  25. May 25, 2010 / 9:15 pm

Wowza, that first dress is so perfect on you – an example of something I might not gravitate toward, just seeing it on a mannequin, but it looks fantastic on you!

ReallY? Y'all think its a good idea to have your underwear outline along the hip, showing in the front? I'm not saying it doesn't look good/you can/can't wear it. It just too tight there, size up.

The Hinterland Dress looks really good on you!! Love it!! and I also love Glazed Fruit Dress, it's definitely on my wishlist.

  28. May 25, 2010 / 9:27 pm

I'm seriously thinking about getting those wedges, they are so cute! If you don't mind me asking, what size did you get and what size do you normally wear? Thanks!

  29. May 25, 2010 / 9:29 pm

Emily – I bought them in the 9, which is my usual size.

  30. May 25, 2010 / 9:58 pm

Roxy, I'm also going to tell you that you need to purchase the Hinterland dress. I hope it fits me at least half as well as it fit you. I emailed you earlier crying about how it disappeared online, and low and behold, I get home, check my wishlist again, and my size popped back! Of course I grabbed it. Thanks again for your help!

  31. May 25, 2010 / 10:09 pm

Hinterland! OMG!! It could not be more perfect for you!!

I am OK with the Anonymous commenter so long as it's kept civil. Can't say I agree with her take but I don't mind the differing opinion. I'm not sure real names get you very far in the bloggie world anyway, since I blog under a nickname. Thank you all for the nice comments, I have been grinning like the Cheshire Cat for hours. 🙂

sorry this is slightly off-topic, but I came across White Sands Wedges on another site, pedshoes.com — not sure if this has been mentioned before. They are made by Argila, style name Eliana. They have it in what looks like a mossy green color, but only size 41 left:http://www.pedshoes.com/argila/argila.asp?productLineID=1&vendorID=46&productID=960&colorID=1750I've tried to track down other Argila shoes in the past, and have found that a very limited number of online retailers sell them… unfortunate, b/c I LOVE their stuff and would love to own a pair one day!hope this helps someone!

  35. May 25, 2010 / 10:34 pm

Great find LH! They are also on Coclico's website, though at full price. For NYC readers, the Coclico store in Soho carries Argila shoes.

I think I'm just in 'one of those' moods today. Sorry I brought it here. This is the result of me being cooped up for the past two days with an infant and a toddler I'm guessing. I'm not usually a confrontational person, and actually shocked myself when I clicked the publish button on that last comment.Anwyay, I guess I will just say that I totally disagree with Anon and leave it at that. You look fab in that dress. (i am now deleting my previous comment and putting myself in time-out)

  37. May 25, 2010 / 11:07 pm

Roxy–the Hinterland dress is beautiful on you!! I hope to try it on in my store one day…have they been out for awhile? But anyways you must get this dress! It's perfect 🙂

  38. May 25, 2010 / 11:42 pm

Roxy, I didn't see anything that did not flatter you, but the Hinterland dress has your name on it. You look fabulous in this dress!

  39. May 25, 2010 / 11:49 pm

WOW! You look amazing in the Hinterland Dress. Actually, you look gorgeous in all of them. They are all very flattering on you.

i agree with a lot of the other posters..the hinterland dress is pretty on you and great for curves (so i'm crossing my fingers it will flatter my curves too…) anonymous @ 2:27 was kind of rude, but to be honest, when i enlarged your pics, i do think your underclothes are outlined a little…ahem…too clearly??

  42. May 26, 2010 / 12:42 am

I think you look great in all the dresses you tried, it's almost a relief that the JJA dress had to be eliminated, or your budget would be toast! I vote you buy the Hinterland Dress, an occassion will always come up, but another perfect dress might not!…okay, probably another perfect dress will come up, but that's not how enabling works, now is it!

I think that the Hinterland dress looks great! But I agree with Anon @ 8:18pm, when you enlarge the picks you can see your underclothes outlined. I think if you size up just one size it will be Perfect! 🙂

Does anyone think the Hinterland dress will go back in stock online? I want it badly!

  46. May 26, 2010 / 1:19 am

Roxy, regardless of how the dresses look on you (although they do all look amazing, especially the Hinterland!), I just want to thank you for the reviews. It is a lot of work and you always give such honest feedback about them (bummed that the June,July,August is stinky; I can totally imagine how that fabric smells)!Anyhoo, just a word of thanks!

  47. May 26, 2010 / 1:23 am

Just want to echo how amazing the Hinterland dress looks on you. As for it being too tight, I think it looks perfect, nothing some nude colored seamless underthings couldn't fix imo. Hope this one pops up on a future OOTD :)!

  48. May 26, 2010 / 1:34 am

I thought the Hinterland Dress made your hourglass figure look great! The Undercurrent Dress also looked flattering despite the diagonal back ruffle that you disliked. And what a shame about the stinky June, July, August Dress because I thought it looked great on you, too.

  49. May 26, 2010 / 2:20 am

Valerie – I saw it at the 5th Ave Anthropologie. I'm not sure if they had a 0 but there was a whole rack of them so chances are good.Katie – :).

  50. May 26, 2010 / 3:10 am

aw, i like the jun/jul/aug dress. sorry to hear it smells 🙁 but smell is very important 🙂 i read somewhere that women have better senses of smell than men on avg (and men have better senses of hearing).

  51. May 26, 2010 / 5:16 am

Roxy- I guess everyone already beat me to it… but that dress is made for you. I hope we are all enablers!

  52. May 26, 2010 / 6:22 am

You look phenomenal in the Hinterland dress. Please say you got it. I went thru every comment and re-read your post. It appears you didn't, but I hope you do. And given Anthro's prices, that sounded inexpensive for such a great fit. I have every confidence you will select the appropriate undergarments when you wear this made-for-you frock. Now. How do I take up a collection for you to get that dress 😉

  53. May 26, 2010 / 12:23 pm

roxy – i believe that dress is for you. however i feel like it's a sale by. it's made for your curves girl. and what' this about under wear? i think you know your clothes well enough by now – and you won't be wearing that type of under wear if you do buy it. i don't see the problem girl.

  54. May 26, 2010 / 12:26 pm

I dunno, I'm honestly a little skeeved by how this conversation has become about my choice of underwear. I'm sure that no one means to offend but it's odd how fixated the conversation is on it. I think it would be obvious that I can't change my undergarments at the store for each item I try on. My goal in showing photos of each item I try on is for you all to see how the item itself looks. Let's not focus so much on what's underneath. I'm focused on the clothing.
