Reviews: Endless Chevrons Dress, Things & Joys Dress, Cooling Palette Dress, Oroya Dress, Girls from Savoy Dress

File this one under things that make you go hmm. This is Anna Sui’s beautiful Endless Chevrons Dress ($198) and while a website search turns up NOTHING it’s available in every size through the catalogue link. (Page 78.) I have no clue why this is.

The model has pale skin like me so I was excited to try on this dress. And I was not disappointed. I sized down one size to a 4 as I always do with Anna Sui. To buy this one though I’d probably stick with my normal 6 because there was some odd pooching happening around my midsection. I would rather start with a dress a bit too big than one a bit too small.

My iPhone had some issues with the pattern of the dress but the catalogue shot accurately represents it. I saw owls in the medallions along the skirt. The dress is a bit stiff and the material is pretty thick — not exactly summer-ready. Still for spring it would work well once this damn heat wave breaks. It was 88 degrees today in NYC! I’m thrilled that Anthro has this deal with Anna Sui because I love her dresses but can’t afford the items in her regular line. I stroll through her Soho store once a month to ogle the goods. Wishlisted!

Eva Franco is another brand I’m thrilled to see at Anthropologie. I have a stunning sundress from the brand that I adore. The bold prints are fab. This is the Oroya Dress ($188). Instant points for having a top accommodating to chests.

I tried my normal size 6 and found the top to be a bit loose. The problem was in the shoulders — the wide straps were a bit too long for me. This might require tailoring rather than sizing down. The sash, while awesomely long was also a bit stiff. I wrapped it all the way around for the far left shot. I’m undecided on this dress. Wishlisted for now.

This Girls From Savoy dress is the Rhomboid Rush Dress ($148). It reminds me of last year’s Glass of Bubbily Dress but with a higher neckline. Also, ahem, Burlapp, take note of how the pattern is focused at the bottom of the skirt rather than around the waist, thanks!

Since the dress is a shift I sized up to an 8. I didn’t need to though; there was plenty of room. I will buy this dress in my usual size 6. The light blue is a wonderful shade and this dress would be work appropriate for me. I love the wide waistband and the skirt is straight enough to give me room to move. I’ve been ambivalent about a lot of Girls From Savoy’s offerings but this is a real winner. This dress will be in my cart the moment it hits the website.

Girls from Savoy gets a double-shot in this reviews set. This second dress gets major boos from me though. It’s the Cooling Palette Dress ($188) and the bodice is cut horribly. So. Very. Tight. A 6 would not zip. An 8 would not zip. A 10 would not zip! I cannot fathom how this dress is cut for adults. Not even worth saying any more. Back to the rack.

Anthro released quite a few prairie-style dresses last month and a few of them just made the website. Maeve’s Things & Joys Dress ($128) is probably my favorite in the bunch. It’s nice and long and the bodice is cut perfectly! Very flattering. There are nice details like a plaited waist and little darts at the bust. The thick straps are a plus. My usual size 6 was wonderful. The skirt is voluminous — more than the product photo indicates. I think you could cut some of the tulle out to settle the dress a bit. But why would you? I found the look to be a comfy delight.

If only I had a place to wear this dress! It’s easy and summer-ready, just not for NYC. Wishlisted though I’m kidding myself. This dress is gorgeous but doesn’t fit into my lifestyle.

The Things & Joys Dress looks fab on you!! But like you I had the same thought with that dress, I love but it doesn't fit my lifestyle. I wasn't attracted to the Endless Chevrons Dress until I saw it on you, I might have to try it myself and see how it fits. I also have the Oroya Dress on my wishlist, you look great in it, I probably won't get it even on sale because I already have my eyes set on the Arribada Current Dress because the style is similar and I love the Arribada more.

Is it awful to hope that I get a bunch of Anthropologie gift cards for my birthday later this month, because now I want 2, if not three of the dresses you reviewed here? I love the Endless Chevrons, Girls From Savoy (no name), and Things and Joy dresses on you! Totally makes me want to run out and try them on and be financially reckless. Sigh…sometimes I hate being responsible. =P

I never gave the Endless Chevrons Dress a second look in store, but now I really want to try it on! It's cute with the leggings too!

This last blue one is so pretty! This is one of those I won't be able to wait until it goes on sale… Does anyone know what cardigan is this with the "Here and There" dress? I didn't care for this dress until I saw it styled like this! Looks awsome!

The first dress from Girls From Savoy is stunning on you….you need it in your closet. It really flatters you. All I can say is "WOW!".

  6. April 8, 2010 / 12:28 am

Oh for crying out loud! I think our stores are getting in almost identical stock! I love the Girls from Savoy dress on you and the Oroya Dress.

Marcela – it's the Percussive Cardigan. I own it in white and LOVE IT. It will also be in my next OOTD roundup. I try not to say this, but BUY IT. NOW. Do not pass go. Etc. It's amazing.

  8. April 8, 2010 / 12:35 am

Stephanie – Yeah, I feel bad saying that about the Things & Joys Dress because it was so wonderful. Alas. I can see the dilemma with the Arribada/Oroya Dress. Both are beautiful so I'm sure you'd love either.Carol – hahahaha, no. Is it bad that I have no gift cards arriving and still want to buy 3 dresses? Sara – I think you would look lovely in the Endless Chevrons Dress. Can't wait to see your review!Annie – thank you! That's so nice, I am smiling ear to ear. :DHometown Queen – It's all part of Anthro's secret plan to have consistency across oceans. Or something. 😉

Owls in the medallions of the skirt?? Endless Chevrons Dress is now on my radar!I spotted the Girls from Savoy dress in my store this week. While I wasn't too impressed seeing it in some bloggers' reviews, I thought it was much MUCH prettier in person. And I really, really like it on you! The shape works for you :). Next time I'm in there, I'll have to try it on.Personally, I wasn't too crazy about the Things & Joys Dress when I tried it on (in the lovely blue). I often like voluminous skirts (LOVE the wright dress), but the way it hit me, it just made my hips/thighs look HUGE. My hips and thighs are huge, but I don't want any help in drawing attention to it lol. Thanks for these reviews Roxy!

The Endless Chevrons was one of the dresses I LOVED from the new spring releases – thanks so much for reviewing! I know you had your issues with the Girl from Savoy dresses but I think you looked gorgeous in both – you have such a tiny waist. My initial reaction was va-va-voom!

  11. April 8, 2010 / 1:51 am

Love the Things and Joys dress best-I need to try that one myself. Just curious why you say it doesn't fit your lifestyle? Is it too casual for NYC? Too country bumpkin? lol…What sort of sundresses can/do you wear comfortably?

  12. April 8, 2010 / 2:48 am

Lauren – fellow owl lover? Love it!Lisa – I like the first Girls From Savoy Dress a lot (the blue shift). Thank you for the compliment. :)Sharon – yes, just too casual for NYC in my opinion. Does not fit into the silhouette here. We tend to do streamlined. So my sundresses are A-line or less in the skirt. Of course the great thing about NYC is that you could technically wear anything you want so long as you style it well. Not sure I'm up to the challenge with that dress though.

I suspect that the Endless Chevrons Dress initially sold out online and then a lot of them got returned. I remember frantically ordering one for myself last month when I saw them disappearing fast. However, when I tried it on, I had the same problems that you did – it fit nicely everywhere except for some serious extra fabric in the stomach. I wound up returning mine, simply because I couldn't justify keeping a $200 dress that looked really awkward on me. For those of you who are interested in the Endless Chevrons Dress, here is my take: The color/pattern are beautiful but the fabric is a stiff, almost paper-like cotton. If you buy this dress, you're really paying for a nice fabric pattern. However, there's nothing about the quality of the material (or the fit) that screams $200 to me.

  14. April 8, 2010 / 2:54 am

Er, I didn't make this very clear, but my previous post was my attempt at an explanation for why the Endless Chevrons link says "sold out" even when the catalog link shows them being available in every size.

i LOVE the anna sui. i tried it on today and immediately noticed the owls (they're my sorority mascot), which made it a must. it is heavy, though and it's already summer here, so i was imagining it for fall. i love the cooling palette; i had to take a bigger size, and i'm a B at best.

Thanks for telling me about the cardigan, Roxy! BTW, I saw the Reed Shirtdress, plaid, blue, sz 8, at the University Village store in Seattle about 30 minutes ago.

  17. April 8, 2010 / 3:38 am

Whoa! That's kind of meta. Not sure whether to laugh or *headdesk*.

  18. April 8, 2010 / 4:54 am

Hey Roxy…I hate to be a naysayer but the Endless Chevrons, while cute, doesn't seem that flattering on you, in my opinion. The top half looks good but side view and the frontal looks like it cuts across the thighs…eek. And something about how the top is cut make the dress looks like a triangle with base at the bottom…it doesn't balance out your top. Perhaps it's just in comparison to the Oroya and Blue bubbly dress, both of which make you oh soon gorgeous!!! The bubbly one is just stunning on you!!! I'm thinking to give it a whirl based on how yummy it looks on you 😉

  19. April 8, 2010 / 5:27 am

love the things and joys dress! but if it doesn't fit with your lifestyle…good to know that 🙂 (i always have to remind myself…i don't need to own every thing i find pretty :)also, is there a reason why you don't want to buy the Girls from Savoy dress in the store but are waiting for it to hit the website? i noticed it in the store this week as well and thought it was cute, but had to concentrate on the sale section for this week. the shopping toleration timer of my 2-yr-old usually expires at just under an hour 😀

  20. April 8, 2010 / 5:33 am

marcela, i think the cardigan is the proscenium cardigan? the navy blue one came home with me last month 🙂 but i'm so glad roxy pointed out the percussive one. i think i like that one better! the minute i brought home the proscenium, which i think is the same cut as the percussive but solid colored, i realized i already have a long navy blue jersey cardi…they look like twins next to each other 😀 (sigh…)

Just a random question out of curiosity. Why would you buy a dress online and pay shipping when it's available in store and you have live near stores? I love it on you, by the way (it being the light blue dress with dots).

things and joys dress as well as the girls from savoy dress are the most flattering on you. You and I have a similar body type – curves and more curves. I'm dying for a review on the catmint dress – I live overseas and NEVER get to an Anthropologie store, yet half of my wardrobe is from there. (thanks to good friends in the US)Could you review it???

  23. April 8, 2010 / 10:31 am

The Anthro website would not let me wish list the Endless Chevrons dress the usual way. It says "Product No Longer Available". But I can add it to my cart and add it to my wishlist from there….O.o

  24. April 8, 2010 / 11:12 am

marie – that's OK, I appreciate the honest opinion. I'd like to see how the 6 looks on me before I make the final call.shares and Anon @ 2:00 AM – It's purely a stalling tactic on my part. Since I'm on a budget these days I wait until the end of the month to make my purchases, so if it's still available come the end of the month I will buy it at the store. Anon @ 2:21 – I will look for the Catmint Dress next time I'm in-store. :)dinsquared – something odd is definitely going on there.

I really like the Girls from Savoy dress! Haven't tried it on yet but I'm looking for dresses that are both work appropriate (with a cardigan!) and can be worn on the weekend or nights out and I think this fits the bill!

  26. April 8, 2010 / 12:45 pm

Thanks for the reviews! I love dresses, but have no place to wear them. I didn't even notice the Endless Chevron till you tried it on. Looks great on you! I really would like to see and try on the Bubbly Girls from Savoy dress. Would you say it's more dressy or casual? Thinking of what dress would be good for a high school reunion. I just got the Sunrise and Midnight dress yesterday, which is real pretty, but I want more options. 🙂

  27. April 8, 2010 / 1:05 pm

Gemma – I think the Bubbily dress would be a great option for a high school reunion. It's more on the dressy side.By the way, that name totally has me thinking of the Hamm and Buble skit from SNL.

Roxy – I love reading your blog and always look forward to your reviews. I just wanted to say that I live and work in NYC and own the Things & Joys dress! I know what you mean about it not really being "NYC style" but I have been pairing it with the Spilling Ruffles cardigan (dress is blue, cardigan is white) and silver flats. I was pleased to see it with the cardigan on the website, too – made me feel like I was doing something right! I get tons of compliments. Also, ladies – the dress has pockets! I couldn't pass it up. Anyway, it looks great on you and you could always wear it on summer weekend trips out of the city. Just a thought!

  29. April 8, 2010 / 1:09 pm

Katie – I love that you made the dress work for you here! I guess to be more accurate I should have said I'm not sure I can make the dress work for me in NYC, but the outfit you put together sounds lovely. 🙂

I love the Endless Chevrons dress, it is on my wishlist too. Although it is similar to the Carrillo Shift dress by Maeve I bought last summer – but Anna Sui's has owls on it, so I'm hooked! Thanks for the reviews Roxy! You look great in everything. Too bad the Cooling Palette dress has a weird fit.

Oh and Roxy – you would definitely have a place to wear that dress in New York. It's a place called "Brooklyn." ;)Also, D., WHY did you have to post that?! Now I have to buy it!

  34. April 8, 2010 / 7:15 pm

LOL Suki! I'm extremely tempted to get it as well, seeing how great it looks on Roxy! 🙂

  35. April 8, 2010 / 7:22 pm

ROXY!!!! You are foxy in that ‘Girls From Savoy’ dress. I love your shape in that! It is a really great choice I think!

The Catmint dress is HORRIBLE on curves. I took some pics last night I'll be happy to send you. Yet another super cute dress that is cut too small up top. Also, the pockets are not sewn down and so create this ridiculous pouf. That dress is getting sent back stat.
