Reviews: New York New York Dress, Fiber Optics Dress, Above-the-Fray Skirt, Air Mail Skirt

We Love Vera is back with a dress I can actually wear (and for that I am thankful). Her prints are always fantastic and this one is no exception. I find the ever-changing product name — currently the New York, New York Dress ($168) for those of you playing along from home — a bit odd. The product description cites Rockefeller Center but when I think tulips I think Park Ave and not the plaza. Maybe that’s just me.

Knowing the fit issues I had with the Snow-Covered Fields Dress ($148, review here) I reached for an 8 in this one. It was loose. I’d grab my normal size 6 to buy. This dress has a much easier fit with an a-line skirt. I love the style of the low scoopneck but I found it to be more revealing than I’d like for a day dress. There are two blue pleats on the sides of the skirt that add some extra interest as well as thick zig-zag stitching around the neckline. I’m not sure where I’d wear this dress so I’ve wishlisted it for now for further consideration.

I was bemoaning the lack of green just a couple of weeks ago. Anthropologie must have heard my whining and came through with the delicious Fiber Optics Dress ($198). I even love the name — very work-appropriate for me. Maybe it’s the color but I also find this dress to be Peter Pan reminiscent. The wrap belt is very long. Even double-bowed there was plenty of extra length.

I started with my true size 6 but found it to be too big. It was droopy, specifically in the chest. So I sized down to a 4 for the photos above. I will need to wear a camisole underneath this dress for sure. This dress doesn’t seem to be designed for a bigger chest. As you can see there is some loose material underneath the bust, above the wrap belt. Some well-placed fabric tape will fix the issue. I couldn’t resist bringing this one home with me.

I’m not sure what made me reach for a 10 in Edme & Esyllte’s Air Mail Skirt ($98). It was practically falling off. I puffed out my tummy to keep it in place for these shots. I will buy this in an 8. I know a lot of my fellow Anthro bloggers have been down on this skirt but I really liked it! The pleats in the back are admittedly odd but how often are people really going to see them? They weren’t so cumbersome to be unflattering. Most of the time in a skirt I will be walking or sitting anyway.

I like the belted waistband and the print is just spectacular. Note that the pleats on both the front and back are nowhere near as pretty as the product shot shows in real life and I think that is contributing to the negative returns. This skirt has a lot of movement to it as you walk which I love. Wishlisted.

I had the rare joy of being in a well-lit, big Anthropologie fitting room so I took advantage with a couple of full shots. I have a head after all! This awesome green top is by Tabitha and it’s new on the website this morning as the Ridgeway Top ($88). I tried on a size 6. It’s not nearly as wrinkly in real life though there are lines throughout the fabric. The bold color is ready for spring. I didn’t mind the cap sleeves. And the length is perfect on my 5’8″ frame! I just wish the price was $58 instead, so I’ve wishlisted it for now.

Paired with the top is Tiny’s Above-The-Fray Skirt ($88). The skirt is somewhere between a straight skirt and a bubble skirt. The hemline is somewhat tapered in. I tried on the large which was a close fit. I was comfortable though. This skirt likely works best with something tucked into it. The tie waist is made from a distressed gingham belt and the skirt itself is slightly distressed.

I love this skirt. The vent in the back is enough to let you walk comfortably and the light striation works perfectly for the warm months. I stopped myself from bringing this home immediately only because I have so many denim skirts already. I will be purging one to make room for this pretty little thing.

Have you tried any of these items on? Have you checked out all the pretty new arrivals this morning?? I am dying. (And so is my wallet.)

Thanks for the reviews, Roxy! The Fiber Optics Dress is gorgeous on you! I saw it in my store the other day but didn't try it on since I was in a hurry. I am a sucker for green, so I'll have to give it a whirl. Some of the new arrivals this morning are just killing me. Hello, Dissolving Spectrum Cardi, I love you. I am loving the Collected Leaves Tank as well. Just when I thought my wallet was safe…

I have been giving serious purchase consideration to every item in this review post. Thanks for reviewing them!

My wishlist just exploded!Up until a couple of days ago, the New York, New York dress was called the Amsterdam dress, and then suddenly the name changed. I thought Amsterdam made more sense–given the tulips–but maybe they thought that New York would sell better. I'm a little sad that the name change means there was nothing specific (no buildings or landmarks) within the print. But since I guess it can represent any city that might have a park with a bridge it in, I will now be calling it the Chicago Dress, e.g. "I must have the Chicago Dress!"The Fiber Optics dress looks beautiful–I'm so glad you bought it. I hope one comes home with me, too, soon. Sigh. . . .

Woohoo, thanks for reviewing the Fiber Optics dress! I haven't seen it in store here in Toronto, but I love a wrap dress and I love the colour. Also didn't think twice about the Above-The-Fray skirt, but it looks really cute! I may have to order.

The green dress looks great on you! I'm afraid of both the We Love Vera dress and the green one, alas, because though I love them, they look like they both run big. Haven't tried either, but I especially want the We Love Vera one, and I don't think I have the chest for it. =((( It looks like it'll be too revealing in a really bad way for me, plus the 2 looked big (no 0 in my store). Booooo, but I'll try it anyway! As for new arrivals, I'm definitely loving the Chantico Tank, but I'm concerned that it might be A.) sheer, B.) per usual, not for my small chest. Clearly I have a problem with liking clothing that does not work for my body type!

Oh yeah, and AL, if I can call it the Charleston dress, I just might have to run out and get it (and if Anthro made anything with the word "Charleston" in it, I might have to buy it no matter how ugly or unflattering ;)).

I love the NY, NY dress (formerly called the Amsterdam dress).I also love the print of the Air Mail skirt so much that I don't think the weird side panels will dissuade me. I am thinking this one will make it to sale b/c so many people don't like the fit.I am also loving almost all the new arrivals this morning.

I bought the Air Mail Skirt with my birthday discount. I think I am one of the few that love it. I'm also thinking the New York New York Dress will come home with me when it hits sale.Off topic, but can anyone tell me how the Laced Roses Cardigan fits? Is it TTS?

I think you look great in the "New Amsterdam" dress, Roxy. And the Fiber Optic dress also is very nice. Oh to have an hourglass figure …I am also loving the new arrivals today – Chantico tank, Flowing Tiers tank, Caballo Falls dress ::sigh:: Not sure what is going on with the Sand-Skimmer dress though – it just doesn't look right.

I had been waiting to try on the AirMail skirt and loved the look and purchased it. Not sure what all the negativeness is surrounding this skirt. I usually have fit issues with skirts(small waist, larger hips) but this skirt looked beautiful and fit nicely. Yes, the panels are a little weird, but it gives the skirt movement. Can wait till weather breaks to be able to wear it……….Now I need a dress for May wedding and the Fiber Optic may be the candidate…it is to die for….

Autumn – Thank you! I am in the same boat with the new arrivals! I think the Dewbud Tee is my favorite. Betty – Anytime. I liked every one of these items. Anthro is knocking it out of the park right now.AL – I liked the Amsterdam Dress name, I thought it was quite fitting with the tulips. It made me realize how a name can really affect your opinion of an item.rachel – As I was in the store everyone was stopping to ooh and aah over the Fiber Optics Dress. It's spectacular and the wrap shape is universally flattering.Katie – hrrm, I think the We Love Vera dress would be fine on most cup sizes. I felt a little bit overflowy in it. I think the issue will be your comfort level with the lower scoop. I hope you get the chance to try it on — I'm curious to hear how it goes.lleila – I agree, the print is the best part of the Airmail Skirt. I'm with you hoping it makes it sale since it seems to be polarizing.sara22185 – I applaud that birthday buy! Lisa – Thanks! I think the Sand Skinner Dress would look great in a desert climate — for some reason I picture wearing it outside by the fire on a cool desert night.

Bronzi – I don't think the other reviews are down on the skirt itself so much as they didn't like the fit. Nice purchase on that. Hopefully I will be joining the Airmail Skirt owners club. 🙂

  13. February 24, 2010 / 3:11 pm

Hi Roxy, i love the new arrivals also! Everything looks so gorgeous. I bought and then returned the air mail skirt because the faux pleats looked a little odd on me. i love the nyny dress also. i agree the scoop is a little deep for day, but it is very pretty. Love the fiber optic dress on you. i will have to keep my eyes out for that irl.

  26. February 24, 2010 / 4:50 pm

Love the whatever-it's-called-this-week-dress (New York, New York) on you! Seems like it's not too fancy, could you wear it to work?!?

  27. February 24, 2010 / 7:03 pm

roxy-i'll join the fray and say- you are a total stunner in that fiber optics dress.hmm… this may be the push i need to make it to my b&m anthro.

  28. February 24, 2010 / 11:38 pm

Hah, I've been calling that dress the "New Amsterdam dress" in my mind as well! Great minds, etc. It's far more fitting, in my humble opinion…Love you in the Fiber Optics dress, Roxy! Glad you bought it! The Air Mail skirt also looks nothing but lovely, so says me. I can't wait to try it on.

  29. February 24, 2010 / 11:47 pm

These are some of my favorite pieces out right now, so I am so glad to see you review them Roxy!! You look fantastic in the (sigh) New York, New York dress, AND the Fiber Optics dress AND the Air Mail skirt — how do you do it? :)I didn't have any aesthetic issue with the pleats of the Air Mail (since you are right, you can barely tell from looking) but it just made sizing totally different for me since to be comfortable in a pencil skirt I have to go way up — and I'm not totally sure the waist will fit right in the bigger size I need. I just think the idea is a little strange and I don't know why they didn't make it just a regular flowily draped skirt. Oh well, I'm still going to get it if I can. And YAY to free shipping! 🙂

  30. February 24, 2010 / 11:50 pm

I love the Fiber Optic Dress on you. I saw the San Skimmer Dress in store, and it's really nice in person, but it's strapless, which I don't do. I think the Air Mail Skirt takes some time to get used to. I don't love it full price, but come sale time, I am totally going to track it down. I wish it was a flowy skirt, but I am going to try sizing up to see if it makes it better for me. The print and the waist detail is just too precious to pass up.

  31. February 25, 2010 / 12:13 am

Correction–I got the San-Skimmer dress and Wind-Catcher confused. 0_o. Sorry!

  32. February 25, 2010 / 12:24 am

Suzanne – yes, I think it would be work appropriate in many work environments. Not conservative work environments but anything above that.Ade – *blush* Thank you. :)Lisa – New Amsterdam Dress, LOVE THAT! Missed it the first time through.Alissa – They're all sure winners in my book.goldenmeans – why thank you! I hope you're doing OK as they keep changing the name of this dress on you. Who knows? At this rate it could still be the Monet Garden Dress in a week or so. ;)Tien – I agree, I think I will wait for the Air Mail skirt to go on sale. Of course I say that now and then this weekend it will "mysteriously" end up in my closet. No idea how this keeps happening!

Not sure if this has already been brought up, but I came across this very familiar print: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-alfJondm_k/SmWmDC7Oj7I/AAAAAAAABtU/aIAzoycf89c/s400/blog_vera_neumanns-central_park.jpgIt's titled "Springtime in Central Park" Maybe that's why Anthro felt the need to change the name of the dress after the fact. I noticed the little twitter from Anthro on the side of your blog which piqued my interest. I've always wondered who the Vera was in "We Love Vera," as I don't know much about fashion history, but now I know where those gorgeous prints come from! I wish Anthro posted more info about their brands, makes the stuff that more interesting & gives it that Anthro edge.
