Year in Review: Anthropologie items I missed out on

Note: Welcome to part 2 of 5 in the 2009 Anthropologie recap! Over the course of the week we’ll take a look back at 2009 and guess what’s coming in 2010. Coming up we’ll take a look at some trends that Anthro took on, some WTF moments and musings on Anthro news from the year.

Today I picked out some items that I wanted to buy but didn’t. One of the tough things about running this blog is that I try on a lot of stuff and as a result items that I probably never would have noticed become must-haves. Impulse control sometimes wins out but I’m still left with a list of items that I liked on but didn’t get to buy. Tough life, I know.

Moth’s Knotted Mallow Sweater: This item was incomprehensibly sheer and an inch or two shorter than I would have liked. Those two factors kept me from plunking down $78 on this short-sleeved sweater. Still come sale time I was ready to buy this but it sold out from under me before I had the chance. And now I haz a sad.

Tawny Lawns Bag: I’m cheating a bit because this item was actually in the December 2008 catalog. But this brassy leather satchel with braided straps is my ideal bag. The $258 pricetag was justifiable but I wasn’t ready to pay that much for a mail-order bag since this one never made it to the local Anthropologies. Then it sold out anyway. This bag (along with the 7 for All Mankind Canberra Hobo Bloomingdales sold even when I had it on hold, damn them) has been on my mind for a good part of 2009. Clearly I need a hobby. But I could also use this bag.

Frilled & Thrilled Cardigan by Sparrow: I tried this one on and loved it. But at the time I wasn’t really ready for cardigans yet so I demurred. By the time I was ready this pretty thing was long gone. I suppose it’s for the best because my sweater drawers are full at this point. If this one happens to pop back up I will make room for it. I check Embers’ blog periodically just in case.

Sparrow’s Daydream & Fancy Cardigan: Oh look, another cardigan. Adored this one from the moment I saw it and I actually bought this one. And then I returned it. And now I’m *headdesking* over it. Oh look, everyone who bought it loves it. Grumble. Maybe they’ll release something similar in 2010?

RicRac’s Folkcraft Tank: I don’t feel as bad about this one. I didn’t really even notice it until it hit sale and at that point the only size I could find was an XL. I’m not sure this tank would actually work on me but it’s pretty. And so I pine for it. Just in case I don’t own enough tanks now.

Buttoned Watercolor Dress: Oh good, this one’s a product page redirect. So you’ll have to take my word for it that once upon a time Anthropologie carried this dress and I liked it a lot. Moulinette Soeurs combined splashes of color into one heck of a frock. I tried to resist because of the strapless factor. It worked until sale time and by then I was unable to find my size. I suppose it’s likely this dress would not look good on me. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

Any items from 2009 you wish you’d bought?

Anka Jacket! I was out of town when it went on sale and missed it!

  2. December 29, 2009 / 6:16 pm

Cinched Medallions Blouse. I kept waiting for it to pop into my store, but I never saw it. Then I went to Yosemite for vacation, and it went on sale. Imagine calling all the Anthro stores with cell reception in the middle of a National Park. Ugh. So sad. If anyone has a size 0 they no longer want, email me! I'll take gently used condition!

Yeah I loved the Frilled & Thrilled Cardigan and I tried it on, but I was hesitating whether to really get it by the time I made up my mind it was gone, I've only seen it pop out once online and it was an XL 🙁

I really regret not buying the Bird in Hand cardigan this spring. My most recent regret is the Cotillion slip. I had a Cotillion slip and both colors of those cute little folkloric tassled socks in my cart, debated about buying them and the next thing you know everything but one pair of socks was out of stock. I continue to hope it will show up on eBay. :- I also heartily regret not buying the fabled beast plates when they were $3.50 each, and now are also gone.

I'm kicking myself over the Maidenhair Fern maillot bathing suit. I know it would have been cute on me but I couldn't justify the cost, and then when it went on sale I missed it. Sadness!

I also missed on the Frilled & Thrilled cardigan=(

I have seen frilled and thrilled cardigans at the santa monica store for some time now, in several sizes, now that said I haven't been in a week or 2, but for awhile recently there were there every time I walked in the back corner of sale, they might have more, fyi. 🙂

Mallard Heels. I thought $350 was too much to pay for a pair of shoes… but now I'm starting to have second thoughts. They were awfully cute.Pessinus Garden Necklace. I had it in my basket and I was waiting to combine it with another order to get free shipping when it disappeared. Web & Loom Cardigan. Anthro has been out of my size for a while. I'm waiting to see if it returns…

Robin what size do you need for the cotillion slip? My store had one small in backstock as of a couple of weeks ago (recently resigned). It was well hidden so I can get you the info on it. Tamamle [at] yahoo dot com. For me? The Sweet Olive Shift. If anyone knows of one in a 4 I'd be eternally greatful!

Good news! I just checked the Anthro site and the Web & Loom Cardigan was back, in my size! I've been checking every day for 2 weeks and this is the first time I have seen it. I'm not letting it pass me by this time…P.S. This blog must be good luck.

  11. December 29, 2009 / 7:45 pm

Robin – I saw the Cotillion Slip in a few different sizes at the Walnut Street Anthropologie store in Philadelphia when I was there last week. You might want to call and see if you can get one sent to you.

Lauren, thank you for your kindness! Sadly, I need a large.Lola, I will do that! Thank you!! 🙂

I am super sad about the Pessinus Garden Necklace, too. I was also waiting to combine it with something else to get free shipping.Speaking of which, I noticed on the sidebar of the blog that free shipping is still going on until "???" Is this true? Because that'd be great. Also, any word on possible markdowns this week, or is the big one coming next Tuesday?

  15. December 29, 2009 / 9:20 pm

Anon, no I need to update the sidebar. The Free Shipping was still working yesterday morning but appears to be off the site now. For sale I have no official word but have my fingers crossed for tomorrow morning. There should be one more big markdown coming, but that is just conjecture.

  16. December 29, 2009 / 9:36 pm

There is definitely NOT free shipping right now. I had to pay $12 for shipping on my Web & Loom Cardigan. I wish Anthro would just have free shipping on $150+ year-round. It really does encourage me to spend more. Roxy – you should do a post on "Things I have purchased that I otherwise wouldn't have, were it not for free shipping." Hopefully Anthro will take note!

ahh i have a buttoned watercolors and love it! (so pretty). but i really am sad that the yellow in-a-moment dress is gone in my size. i went with the red, but . . . not quite the same.

  18. December 29, 2009 / 11:35 pm

Sarah,Check on ebay for the In A Moment dress. There have been many sellers of this dress, in various sizes and all colors. Plus, it's a bargain. They must have gotten hold of samples. I bought a yellow one from an ebay seller before xmas, for $69 free shipping – and there is nothing wrong with it; looks and fits just like the ones in the store.

Hi Roxy (and other New Yorkers),I'm going to be in NYC this weekend but I probably only have time to visit one Anthropologie store. Which one would you recommend?

  20. December 30, 2009 / 12:12 am

Lindsey, thank you so much for the link! 😀 I am going to hold off, saving my pennies for next month. Lola, I am bad when it comes to this question! I like all three for different reasons. If you're not dying for shoes I'd say 5th Ave because they seem to get new stock first.

Hi Roxy:I love, love, love your blog. I have a question for you about price adjustment. I bought bustling avenue dress at the store last week for a full price and I heard it's on sale in the store (not in the website, though) since the store is about 3 hours away from my house, is it possible to get price adjustment on the phone? Thanks for the great blog!

Ah, sorry, missed the part about you being 3 hours away from a store. If you have an anthro card CS should be able to look up your transaction that way. If not it's going to be hard for them to help you by phone. I'm not really sure if the store can do anything for you either, but it never hurts to call and try. That's something I will ask next time I'm at an Anthro.

Thanks Roxy:Yes, I have an anthro card, I mostly do purchase online, but once in a while I go to the store (every 6 weeks or so) that's why your blog is so helpful to me!Last week I went to the store and saw the bustling avenue dress on my size and bought it. If I want to do price adjustment, do I want to call the customer service or the store where I bought the dress from?

  25. December 30, 2009 / 1:01 am

I would call CS directly. Hopefully they can verify any in-store prices. And I also hope the dress will be on-sale online in the morning and that will make the process much easier for you. If I am giving bad advice here anyone feel free to correct me.

I love that you're doing this Roxy, it's flashbacks of different moments when I fell in love while flipping through Anthro catalogs. Can't wait to see what you'll post next, especially the WTF ones!!Dea http://www.beachfloatabroad.blogspot.com

Hi Roxy,Is there a location in NYC that is particularly large or unique architecturally? I'm taking some friends who don't normally shop at Anthropologie, so I'm looking for the location with the biggest "wow" factor. Thanks again for all of your advice!

  28. December 30, 2009 / 1:25 am

In that case you MUST go to Rockefeller Plaza. It's in an old theatre and the interior is jaw-dropping. (You enter through turnstiles.)

  29. December 30, 2009 / 1:28 am

P.S. If you're ever in Philadelphia, you should check out the Walnut Street store. It's in a four-story historic mansion and it's the most beautiful Anthropologie store that I have been to so far. I went for the first time last week and my boyfriend practically had to pry me away. I wanted to live there.

  30. December 30, 2009 / 1:29 am

Oooh, that sounds perfect! Thanks again!

Thanks Roxy…You are so VERY helpful!I haven't wore the dress yet, I am planning to wear it this spring for my big trip, besides today is only 9 degree where I live, too cold to be wearing a dress,If they give me too much trouble on the process, I probably just have to return the dress the next time I go to anthro store….ugh….sad…Happy 2010 to you, thanks again for your wonderful blog!

The Fields of Gold Dress!!! I keep hoping it will turn up 🙁

  33. December 30, 2009 / 2:05 am

I didn't know it, but I missed that frilled and thrilled cardigan. Love it!

  34. December 30, 2009 / 2:15 am

Oh yes, and the Flocked Chiffon blouse… sigh… it was so beautiful, and then it was gone! 🙁

Just from my experience, stores are very skeptical to do anything involving price adjustments or really anything over the phone / without a hard copy of the receipt. You have to understand that there are scammers out there that mess with receipts. I would call customer service directly, as Roxy has advised you. Chances are this would be a much quicker and painless process anyway. Additionally, if that isn't the correct procedure they will be the best source to provide you with what IS the correct procedure.

Betsy – The Anthro in Charlottesville, VA had some Flocked Chiffon blouses in stock. You might want to give them a call if you are interested.

  37. December 30, 2009 / 4:08 am

Betsy– The Corte Madera, CA store had a bunch of flocked chiffon blouses on sale. Try giving them a call, too! Good luck!

  38. December 30, 2009 / 7:36 am

Wish I'd bought the High Speed cardigan! By the time I'd made up my mind, it was gone.

  39. December 30, 2009 / 5:17 pm

I missed out on the buddy buddy sweater coat – I loved it so much but $250 was a little too much for me to swallow. Then I missed it when it went on sale. I never got to try it on in person though so I just tell myself that it probably would have looked horrid (even though I'm lying to myself).

Hrm…honestly I seriously lacked willpower this year so I think I got most of what I wanted, but I do sort of wish I got the Hippopotamus Locket or the Facile Dress. And I am pretty annoyed that the black Decimal Dot tights disappeared so quickly! And hm, the Freshly Fallen coat. And the Hattie V-Neck. Okay, okay, so clearly I somehow managed to resist buying some stuff ;)Sorry you missed out on the Buttoned Watercolor dress! I wish I had known you wanted it; I ordered it on sale and then returned it.

  41. January 8, 2010 / 3:03 am

Stephanie thank you for letting me know! I am kind of wary about paying that much for it, that's only $10 less than full price. I'm hoping to find one around the sale price…

Hi Roxy, I discovered your blog a couple of weeks ago and have become absolutely obsessed! Just love it. Anywho, I also found out about Anthropologie Aficionado through your blog but am now having trouble accessing it… something about it being open only to invited readers? I'm stalking the anemone bloom cardigan and wanted to check for it there. Do you know what that's all about? Thanks!

  43. January 11, 2010 / 3:11 am

Hi Emily, welcome! There was concern that ebay resellers were among those watching the Anthropologie Aficionado blog so Embers made it invite-only. I emailed her a few days ago to ask how she wants to handle future access, but I have not heard back from her yet.
