anthro: in our own words

Hooray, it’s here! I always look forward to the anthro: in our own words newsletter. This month the theme is gifts and how to wrap them. Two Anthropologie staffers worked together on the main feature — Jeffrey chose the gift and Shauna showed some DIY wrapping options.

This one is by far my favorite wrapping option. I love maps! And the bow is beautiful. I would like all of my presents to be wrapped in maps this year. Treasure maps, old maps, new maps…I’m going off the deep end here. They’re all great and worth checking out. I would love to attend a workshop on learning these techniques.

The email also reminds us about The Anthropologist site (read more about it here) and then settles back into business. Specifically anthro tells us about their Wee Hours program, during which you can dump your kids on unsuspecting SAs leave your children with trained professionals for crafting or reading projects while you shop at Anthropologie. A complete list of participating stores is here. My mom totally would have dragged me to Anthro as a kid if it had been around then. And little me would have loved this. Roxy approved for sure.

The bow they show is the same bow Anthropologie is using on their packages. I got one yesterday. It should be easy to duplicate using ribbon and felt. And, what you could for map wrapping paper is copy maps from the library (or wherever they have maps) at the copy shop. I think they have large format copiers. Of course, Goodwill or a used book shop might have maps you can use. I am boring and use brown kraft paper every year. It is recyclable and I bought a giant bolt at our local office supply. I use nice ribbon to dress it up. Sometimes I stamp it – OK, I always say I am going to stamp it, and usually do enough for one package. WAY to much work. I do make my own tags. I will end this book now by saying I think I will drop my daughter off for the story time and plan my after baby/after christmas purchases.

sigh…no nyc wee hours! i guess i'll have to stick with options B or C then–chasing my toddler around the store (and thus not really having the ability to shop) or trying to hush/ply with food/stickers/toys/books/juice my whiny stroller-bound wee one!

Hey Roxy! I just wanted to let you know I just received the Lydia tunic in the mail and I absolutely loved it! I usually am an XS at anthro but could only find a Small, so I went with it, and I am glad I did! I love it. It is perfect with leggings and knee high riding boots. just wanted to update you, I remember we had chatted on here about it. 🙂

I love the idea of Wee Hours! It would be great not shopping with a 6 year old boy. Too bad the Austin stores are all in the middle of the week during work hours. Maybe next year.

I wrap small packages in pages from the Anthropologie catalog and then wrap embroidery floss around the package a few times and tie the ends into a bow. I top it with a tag I make from old cards I've collected, and wah-lah, a beautiful, inexpensive, and creative package.I have 5 of them siting on my entry table right now waiting to go to their final destinations.

Georgine, thanks for the ideas! I have some older subway maps that I think I'll use to start. stefanie – I noticed the lack of NYC wee hours. I figured it was due to space issues but Rockefeller Center has that whole extra room. Total bummer.Steph H – thanks for reporting back! 🙂 I'm glad the Lydia worked out.Graceybug – I hope they expand the program next year too. Agreed it is a great idea. The Anthropologiest – thank you! It's on my watch list. Mwahahaha.Tracy D – OOhhh, I love this idea too. That is wrapping paper I'd want to keep for sure.
