Reviews: Winged Victory Top, Rare Bloom Tee, Skirted Peacoat

Today’s visit to the 5th Ave Anthropologie was both a blessing and a curse. The three new items I most hoped to see were all there. That’s the blessing. The curse is that I had trouble controlling my spend total! I even enable myself sometimes. The staff was in a great mood while I was there. A lot of the seasonal staff has started and I have to say that everyone was so nice! It truly adds to the experience of shopping at Anthro. Kudos to you, 5th Ave team!

Odille’s Winged Victory Top ($68) was waiting for me downstairs. I grabbed both a 6 and an 8. The three left-hand shots above are the 6 and the far right shot is the 8. This shirt is nothing short of exquisite. My favorite Odille piece ever, easily. On the hanger I was nervous that it would be too short on me and luckily that was not the case. There is no support built into the top and I think that’s OK. It’ll be easy to wear a strapless bra under the top.

The product shot accurately conveys the fan detailing and cross pleats. Also, I’m delighted to report that the sash is just as full in real life! It’s not quite the vibrant lime I was hoping for. It’s softer and slightly darker — it just photoed very bright. Trust the product shot color.

The one issue I often run into with strapless tops is being between sizes, and this one was no different. The 6 was perfect everywhere except across the bust, where my 34D’s caused the fan pleats to pull. It’s a shame but I had to size up to the 8, which was loose everywhere except for my bust. I will have to get this top tailored. I just had to bring this top home with me. I don’t usually say this but if you are thinking of buying this top just do it. It’s really amazing. I am however kicking myself for not getting the Frilled & Thrilled cardigan even more now, as it would be a great casual option over this top.

With one winner already set aside, I moved on to Deletta’s Rare Bloom Tee ($58). I knew I’d be buying this unless it looked absolutely horrible on me. And happily it did not look horrible at all.

I tried on both the turquoise and the pink (pink photo below). The pink is rather washed out — close to J.Crew’s dusty blossom color. The floral medallion is slightly unfinished. The care instructions say it’s hand washable so I hope this will curtail fraying. The draping is done so well. I sized down to a small and thought it was perfect. The turqoise is a dark blue closer to teal. There was some cleavage peeking from the v-neck but really just a hint. In the end I decided to buy the pink because I already own about 1,000 teal shirts. I hope to pair it with my Conch Shell Pencil Skirt from last spring (review here).

The Rare Bloom Tee in pink.
NOTE: this is a medium, too big.

The last item I was able to cross off my to-do list was Idra’s Skirted Peacoat ($168). My hopes they were sky high for this coat.

Sadly I came crashing back to Earth on this one. Tien posted a review this morning on her blog and I knew I was in trouble. I tried on the 8 and was bummed out immediately. The biggest problem for me is that the torso is far too short. The skirt portion of the coat is out of proportion — way too voluminous. Not like the product shot at all. It doesn’t sit gently. It sticks out. From the product photo I was expecting a much lower wale that would resemble velvet. It is pretty soft but it’s also kind of stiff.

The buttons were also a letdown for me. Very plastically and ugly up close. I was really disapponted by this coat. This coat is getting rave reviews online so I wonder if the production line changed at all? Because this looks like an error on me.

I had no interest in the rare bloom tee until I saw it on you! I will certainly have to give it a try.Sorry about the peacoat. I had high hopes for it, too. The Winged Victory top looks stunning on you.

The Winged Victory Top is lovely on you–thanks for reviewing! I'm going to search my store for it tomorrow.

Thanks for the review…I'm torn up inside now because I want the peacoat to work so badly..I thought it looked nice on you in the photo just needed some jeans or pants..how tall are you roxy?I have a long torso too, so I may be SOL but I'm going to order it anyway..if I have to return I will.

Thanks ladies!Natalie, I'm 5'8". The skirt is the issue for me. If it laid down closer to my body I'd have been fine with it. I know it has crinoline underneath but it was just too much for me.

It had a lot of filler in the skirt, so there's not much to be done about making it flatter. I'm with Roxy, the skirt is too poufy.I felt like a clown. I really wanted to like it.

OMG, the rare bloom tee is freaking GORGEOUS! I'm buying it right now, thanks to you. 😀

I just went to the DC store and the SA told me that the reason why they have no put out a lot of the new arrivals was because they have so much stuff on sale they needed to get rid of. Anyway, I did try the Idra's Skirted Peacoat and oh boy, it was awful. I felt like a ballerina but not in a good way. The skirt portion was awful, all the tulle made it stiff and not flattering. Thanks for the other reviews.

Chloe, I cannot wait to see the OOTD you create with the tee. You have really been on a roll lady!Hmm, very interesting Rosa. If Anthro wants to sell their sale stuff, they REALLY need to make more space in that section. I hate getting bumped into and it's so tight in the sale area that I always feel rushed. It's a complete fail on Anthro's part. Total opposite of the rest of the store. If they don't want to devote store square footage to it, ship it back to the warehouse and put it online.

Roxy, they had racks with tons of tops and skirts right outside the dressing room. The sale room was super packed with people and clothes and I felt like I was going to die in there and nobody was gonna be able to find my body for days in the piles of clothes. OK, a little dramatic but it was a mess. I have never seen the store that way. I was able to score a Lasata Jacket which I had been stalking for a while. But I want to see the new arrivals!!!

I ironed my skirted peacoat. I ironed the lining really well and it changed the poofy business a lot. Mine needed a good pressing… no doubt about it. It still has poof going on though!!! Beware the poof.

Roxy: you are killing my wallet. I had placed the Rare Bloom Tee on my wish list to try on. After I saw it on you and your review, I went out(lame excuse to peruse the sale racks) and bought it. Small fits me nice and it is beautiful. I bought the teal, although I was wondering if I could work the pale pink one a bit more in my wardrobe. Trying to keep myself from rationalizing buying it in two colors. LOL

    e. and Lacey — thank you!Lauren H. – I see the Winged Victory top sold out VERY quickly in the smaller sizes online! Wow. The 5th Ave Anthro was also out of 0s yesterday. Since this is a house brand I hope they can order more inventory. Also your photo is too darling. I may be repeating myself but what a beautiful kid!Bronzi LOL. If the shirt makes it to sale I think I'll buy the teal version.Just a heads up ladies, I'll have OOTD's with both the Rare Bloom Tee and the Winged Victory Top this week. So if you're on the fence c'mon back and see them. 🙂

Thanks for posting about the skirted peacoat! I was thinking about ordering it online but now I think I'll pass. Winged victory top just moved higher on my list, thanks to you 🙂

Your review made me run out and buy the WInged Victory top. 🙂 I wasn't sure what size I'd be … I sort of guessed based on past experience. Knowing that my size +/- a size on each end makes me nervous. I hope I chose right … if I love it and it doesn't fit, I'll be so sad!
