Reviews: Monochromatic Corset Dress

Anthropologie at ShopStyle

Corey Lynn Calter makes impossibly fun, flirty dresses that flatter women of all shapes and sizes. I tried on (and loved) the Slice-Of-Lime Dress ($178). Ditto the Caranday Dress ($178).

Yet something gave me pause about the Monochromatic Corset Dress ($188). Goldenmeans recently discussed wishing for this dress and I expressed some hesitation about the skirt. I was worried that the horizontal stripes were going to add bulk. Only one way to find out!

I tried this dress on twice. The first time I tried on a 6, my normal size in Corey Lynn Calter. It was laughable. The dress has a side zip and I could not even zip it halfway. The corset has boning in it and overall it’s very, well, corset-like. So the next time I was smarter and grabbed both an 8 and a 10. The 8 is the shot on the far left and the rest are the 10.

I was able to zip the 8 up but I was squeezed to an uncomfortable point. Finally the 10 worked and I was able to comfortably zip up all the way and give my chest room to breathe. And I think proportionally it looks better on me than the 8 did anyway. One of the reviews of the product page ponders if it’s possible to wear a bra with the dress so I just want to confirm that yes it’s easily possible. The bodice has significant boning in it so you can go braless if you want but I require more support than the dress would give on its own.

Kudos to Anthropologie for showing an accurate picture of a sash! Finally! You can tie the sash in the front, the back, the side…anywhere you want. The skirt is very full but doesn’t create too much poufiness. When you twirl it catches some air but you might accidentally hypnotize someone with the pattern so ladies beware! The lace-up detail lends a bit of sexiness to this dress that I appreciate. And I love this model. She has the same complexion as me so if it looks good on her there’s a good chance it will on me too.

And if I may add one personal note: my guy liked this dress so much he’s offered to buy it for me. So it’s not only Roxy-approved, it’s Roxy’s guy-approved too! Every gal deserves to have a dress she feels fabulous and sexy in, and for Fall 2009 I think this is the dress for me.

Fabulous dress. You should totally do a twirling shot next time, ala GingerSnap. 🙂

kate, I totally agree that this dress deserves a twirling shot a la the lovely GingerSnap. iPhones don't seem to do motion shots well. I may have to start bringing my real camera along. pfp and Shannon, thank you both! Also pfp I am stalking the Checkered Please Jacket but haven't found it yet. Your order is probably going to beat my in-store search.

OMG, you lucky gal, this better be hanging in your closet right now, it looks fabulous! This dress is just so beautiful IRL – and to my surprise, not overwhelming or too over-the-top. Mine is the 2nd review on the Anthro site right now – I LOVE this dress. It is my favorite dress in the closet now, hands down. I also had to size up (one size) because of the bust. Even with the price tag, it's selling like hot cakes at my local B&M – there were literally only 3 left last time I went, compared with a whole rack a week earlier. You are *so lucky* your mister got it for you! …If anyone is deterred by the price, just want to let you know that the construction is *well done* and the dress seems sturdy and totally worth it. 😀 Thanks for the review, chica!

I fell in love with this dress in the catalog, but I couldn't get a 12 to fit in the store last week. (I'm usually an 8.) I'll just have to look for a 14.
