Anthropologie loves them some plaid

For reasons so far unclear to me grunge seems to be the next fad making a comeback. Has anyone else noticed that we’re cycling (or should I say recycling?) through trends very quickly these days. I feel like just 3 months ago we were high on the 1940s while the 1920s were just starting to peek through.

While some designers seem to be doing a literal plaid comeback Anthropologie has at least invested in reinterpretation. I must admit I like many of the resulting pieces. They’ve showcased several of their plaid offerings; my favorites below.

There are a bunch of tops to choose from. The Polaire Vest ($118) takes top prize in my book for its unique shape, black/brown/grey plaid combination and waist-slenderizing peplum detail. I hope that Anthropologie shows more outfit options for this item as I admit to being a bit stumped on how to complete the look. Some other tops that I find fetching from the set are the Woodside Walk Blouse ($98); the Peeping Plaid Blouse ($78) and the Two Step Shirt ($98), which for some reason didn’t make the cut into Anthro’s set.

Just say tweed and I’m there. The Tweed & Chiffon Dress ($188) could be my winter staple this year. I love that it’s discreet enough for work yet dressy enough for cocktails after. The model shot gives me some pause over the length but in the winter it’s easy enough to pair it with tights and tall boots to disguise the length a bit. Can’t wait to try this one on. If you want a good chuckle, you should take a look at the upsells on the product page. Anthro apparently wants you in all plaid all the time. 😉

Speaking of legwear, the pattern of the Woven Rush Tights ($18) is nothing short of amazing. I love how the basketweave looks almost licorice-like. The model shot outfit? Want. Now please.

My guy likes to say I have a thing for grandpa cardigans (it’s true) so the Millbrook Cardigan ($148) could very well be my grandpa coat. Sparrow really nailed it with the woodsy green color. It takes this jacket away from being old and musty and into chic hunter jacket territory. The photo from the catalog? Stunning and unexpected styling.

Call me crazy but I am digging the lumberjack vibe of the Birling Ruffle Coat ($288). I’m a bit wary of the drop waist and I’m done with ruffles yet this coat still manages to draw me in because a) it’s made by Tracy Reese and b) it looks so temptingly warm. So I guess my winter wardrobe is going plaid. Patterns are more sophisticated than they appear.

love the dress and would be interested in trying on the vest to see if it works for me. I recently bought a green/gray plaid jacket at Nordies that reminds me of that cardi. Looks like it is time for a trip to Anthropologie – thanks 🙂

Hi Roxy, this is off topic, but how do I add a hyperlink to a comment? I cannot figure it out. Thanks for any help.Back to the topic. I don't do plaid. Catholic school then boarding school killed me on plaid. And I hate plaid shirts, Every time I see Katie Holmes in a plaid shirt I think doesn't Tom Cruise have enough money, that poor Katie doesn't have to shop at L.L. Bean? OK, I am mean, it's hormones. Of course, the Anthropologie stuff at least looks good. I like the vest, I would like it better in another print. I can't remember, did you say you tried it one?

Georgine, this page shows how to create a link. Agreed that plaid can sometimes be too Catholic schoolgirl (and some designers are going for that) but I don't get that vibe from Anthro, thank goodness. I get more of the laid-back artist/lumberjack vibe.I haven't tried on the vest yet but as soon as I see it in-store I plan on grabbing it for an IRL.
